Default Kath & Kim - Season 1 DVD Review

What do you get when you have a divorced mother and her recently separated daughter together under one roof? You get the dysfunctional duo Kath & Kim, and now the entire series is available on DVD in a two disc set! The one season sitcom from NBC stars Molly Shannon as the mother, Kath, and Selma Blair as the daughter, Kim, two stuck-up suburban women that believe that the entire world revolves around them. Kath is divorced from her husband, but is dating (and hoping to marry) her new boyfriend, while Kim is recently married (yet somehow already on the brink of divorce). The men in their lives have a more down-to-earth approach towards life, yet somehow manage to put up with everything that the duo throws at them, no matter how ridiculous and demanding they may be at times. So will Kath and Kim settle down with the loves of their life, or will they get into a bunch of ridiculous and bizarre situations to empower their own egos? They'll take the latter, of course, and that is the story behind Kath & Kim!

I don't know what the american version is like...I have seen the original australian one here in england and it was pretty funny...but a lot of times the humor just doesn't translate. (men behaving badly, for instance)

Default IF the series' ratings...

...had held up, NBC probably would have renewed it for another season. But they became impatient over its inability to attract more (or new) viewers. It's a sure sign a network determines a new show's days are numbered by how much promotion it gets. In "KATH & KIM"'s case, it became "perfunctory" as far as the network's weekly Thursday night "Comedy Done Right" promos {i.e. "On 'MY NAME IS EARL', Earl blows himself up! Then, it's 'KATH & KIM'...and there's a shake-up at 'THE OFFICE' when Michael and Dunder-Mifflin have a showdown! And Liz finally cracks up on '30 ROCK'- and guess who's analyzing her?? {Robin Williams guest stars} Thursday night 'Comedy Done Right'..only on NBC!"}. Exaggerated, yes, but that was NBC's attitude towards the end of the series; why waste time promoting a "dead horse"? Oh sure, the idea of an American adaptation of the original Austrailian comedy looked good on paper...and Molly Shannon & Selma Blair looked like a perfect comedy duo....but where the heck were the majority of viewers supposed to embrace this "can't miss" comedy? WATCHING THE COMPETITION, THAT'S WHAT!!! And now, they're trying to make their "investment" back by releasing the show on DVD. Oh, well, someone will "accidentally" buy it and enjoy it for what it was...maybe they could produce a second season better than we could....right now, our prime-time money's tied up in Jay Leno. He's a guaranteed annuity...
