Default CBS Orders More Episodes for 11 Shows; Will the Others be Cancelled?

CBS is having such a good year that they’re increasing their episode orders for some of their most popular shows, according to EW. The orders total 13.5 more hours of programming. In terms of total airtime, that’s the equivalent to ordering a whole new series.

This could mean a few less reruns for viewers… or that the network will be able to dump struggling shows even sooner.

CSI: Miami, How I Met Your Mother, NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, and Two and a Half Men have all been given orders for two additional episodes each.

The Big Bang Theory, Criminal Minds, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CSI: NY, The Good Wife, and The Mentalist have each been given one more installment.

What about the rest? Are they in danger of being cancelled? Unless their ratings improve, many of them are.

Accidentally on Purpose — The sitcom just recently received an order for five more episodes. It’s not a full season order but a positive sign considering the show’s mixed ratings history. It could survive to see a second year but don’t expect any more than 18 installments for this season.

Cold Case — Last season, it was a toss-up between this show and Without a Trace. Cold Case won out but CBS execs may be regretting their choice. Last year, Cold Case averaged a 4.1 rating in the demo and 11.8 million viewers. This season, it’s lost half of its audience in the demo and fallen to nine million viewers. Unless things turn around, this show will surely be cancelled.

Gary Unmarried — CBS renewed this series last Spring though the ratings didn’t mandate it. In season one, it averaged a 2.5 in the 18-49 demo. This season, Gary’s been averaging a bit less with a 2.2 rating. Unless things improve, it could be cancelled or it might survive for another season.

Ghost Whisperer — The Friday night drama is way down in the ratings this season. Last season, it averaged a 3.6 in the demo and 10.5 million in total viewers. This year, it’s dropped to a 2.06 rating and 8.36 million. It’s on shaky ground for sure and could be cancelled after this season unless it’s saved by a syndication deal.

Medium — The Patricia Arquette show was saved last season when NBC cancelled it. The deal happened because the show is co-produced in-house by CBS Television Studios and was making money in syndication. Its Friday night numbers are about the same as Ghost Whisperer’s and isn’t safe from the chopping block either.

The New Adventures of Old Christine — CBS renewed this sitcom last Spring but the ratings weren’t great; 2.5 in the 18-49 demo. This season, it’s been averaging a 2.0. It could be cancelled but is co-produced by CBS and is more likely to survive so that there will be enough episodes for syndication.

Numb3rs — This is another Friday night show that’s been struggling this season. CBS has just cut its episode order for the season and it looks like a shoe-in for cancellation.

Three Rivers
— This Sunday night drama has been struggling in the ratings from the start. It isn’t expected to survive past 13 episodes.

What do you think? Are any of the endangered shows worth saving?

Cool

The only one of the endangered shows that I have been watching is "Gary Unmarried". I hope it survives to see another season. As for the rest It's probably time for them to go.

I don't understand - Medium, Cold Case, Old Christine, Gary Unmarried, and Ghost Whisperer have already gotten full 22 episode seasons, while Accidentally on Purpose has pretty much gotten a full season (18 episodes is enough, considering it'll probably end in March in favor of Rules of Engagement) and Numb3rs still has a 16-episode season. The only show on this list that will for sure not be getting more episodes is Three Rivers. The others should be safe for the full season (although I'm guessing Numb3rs will be replaced by Flashpoint or one of the new dramas by February/March).

And where they hell did they get their facts from? Cold Case averaged like a 2.8 demo last season (a 4.1? Really?), while GU and OC were both around a 2.2-2.3 demo rating, and Ghost Whisperer had around a 2.5 demo (3.6? WTF?) and so did Medium. Clearly this is not a very well-written article.

tvseriesfinale.com is always iffy. They check their facts less often than NBC finds a new hit series, lol.

And I just haven't had the time at all lately for the blog. I'd hate to say I gave up on it, but keeping it updated on a regular basis just seemed unreasonable.

I know what you mean about TVSERIESFINALE. I'm always sending them corrections. But I do think the stuff at the begioning of the article that said that how i met your mother two and a half men ETC... Has Been Picked Up For 2 Additional Episodes sounds prety factual.

Hnestley i don't think Accidentally On Purpose Is going to make it past this season. Nor Is Three Rivers. I think another order for Old Christine would be good for syndication vaule, but besides for syndication reasons, that show shouldn't be on anymore. If They Do Cancell THat, i think That Rules Of Engagemnets Would Go There (WED AT 8:00.). Or Maybe One Of The MOre Stronger Rated Shows to kinda boost the Raitings For Wednesday nights, becasue hnestly they aern't that good. But i have been seeing that Old Christine has been beating Hank, so that may be good, in a way. But I do watch hank on wednesday nights since old christine is free on demand.

Yeah, the episode orders are all correct. I'm pretty sure we'll see Rules of Engagement return in the same fashion it did last season, in March at 8:30, taking over for Accidentally on Purpose. That would leave Old Christine and Gary Unmarried in the Wednesday hour for the entire season. There ratings are okay (not for CBS standards, but still okay), and it seems like CBS is really persistent in wanting to start a full 2-hour Wednesday comedy block - why else would they leave this low rated hour intact for 2 seasons?

Personally, I think we'll see a 2 hour Wednesday comedy block happen next season. Chances are, either BBT or 2.5 Men will anchor the night at 9pm. My choice is Men - BBT would then shift into the Monday 9pm slot, with Men finishing off its final seasons getting Wednesdays off the ground. Criminal Minds would probably shift to 10pm, and I could definitely see CSI:NY going to Sundays.

If not, CBS would probably cancel Gary, and probably Old Christine as well. Of course, ABC will probably try to go for it again - if ABC keeps The Middle around for a 2nd season, I highly suggest they get Old Christine to go with it. Both shows are perfect fits with one another. I don't know why Three Rivers is still around (Cold Case needs to go back to 9pm, with TAR being so high lately, maybe with repeats at 10pm), and Medium and GW seem pretty safe for another season to me. Numb3rs will probably end, though.

Wait! Two and a Half Men already had a 24 episode season, didn't it? So would it now have 26? And why the hell does "Big Bang" always get 23, and not 24?

Men still has 24 eps this season. And as to BBT, my guess is that the 23 episodes has to do with the agreement between CBS and WB, which I believe called for 23 episodes for seasons 2-4, but I could be wrong. I'm also guessing it has to do with the way it turns out at the end of the season. With 23 episodes, BBT would end 1 week before the other comedies, and then Rules of Engagement would air its season finale in the timeslot like last season.

Unfortunately, its seeming less and less likely like BBT will be airing after the Superbowl.

I just have a feeling CBS won't go with sitcoms after the Superbowl. And, if they do, the episode orders would be off. If CBS really wanted BBT after the SB, then it would have ordered 24 eps, not 23. Plus, it's not like they need the help - BBT is the #1 show in the demo on CBS.

My gut feeling is that The Mentalist will get it. CBS wants it to do better on Thursdays, and while it is doing very well, the demo still remains low. An airing after the SB could be best. If not, I could also see NCIS:LA getting it, possibly CSI (perhaps a special episode with William Petersen?), or even the season premiere of Survivor: All-Stars.

And I'm really warming up to AOP - it's such a cute show, and Jenna Elfman is great in it. Glad to see CBS is giving it time.

So let me get this straight, Julie, after the Super Bowl from February on sitcoms on CBS will be a thing of the past? As in Two and a Half Men and Big Bang Theory finally getting the axe?

No no, I meant literally after the Superbowl, as in airing on the same night as the Superbowl, once it ends. I just have a feeling CBS won't air sitcoms in that coveted timeslot, mainly because they don't need the added support. Of course, any show could use the Superbowl for support, but CBS is probably thinking they can make better use of the slot airing a show like The Mentalist, a new show like NCIS:LA, or even a fading show like CSI.
