Both sets of years are great, don't get me wrong, but I'd go for the BJ years. They were still funny, but not in the classical comedy way. They also dealt with serious issues. The show mellowed out, in a sense, but the writing remained excellent, and even got better IMO. It is good to remember that the BJ years were also largeley the Potter (not Blake) and Winchester(not Burns) years. Two very different mindsets. Everyone added to the 'mix' to change the chemistry somewhat to what always will be one of the best sitcoms ever.

Chalk up another vote for " The Trapper Years ". In fact, lets make that the entire cast of the early years of the show including Maj. Frank Burns. One of the most under rated actors on the set !

And from all accounts, the actor who was least like his character. Larry Linville wouldn't have tolerated Frank Burns. I think he even said in an interview that if you ever meet a Frank Burns in real life, run!

I have to go with the Trapper years. BJ was okay, but he started irritating me when he started whining about Peg having to do things around the house that he used to do. Besides, the show was funnier and more light hearted, and when they did a serious episode, it had more of an impact because people were so used to the comedy. Later on, it just became something that was expected of the show and had started to become "preachy" at times.

I have to say the BJ years not only because I prefer BJ to Trapper (sorry LuLu) but also because the BJ years brought us Col. Potter, Major Winchester (a much stronger foil for Hawkeye than Frank Burns) and a larger role for Klinger as the new company cluck er I mean clerk. Also Father Mulcahy became more prominent in later seasons as it became more of a true ensemble rather than Hawk, Trap, and everyone else as in the early years.

I thought the best seasons were 2-7. I don't really care for the first season that much, and by the last few seasons Alan Alda turned it too much into a melo-dramatic "message of the week" show. I think it actually went on a few years too long.

To pick one I'd say the Trapper years, but the first few years of BJ were still pretty good.

Mike Farrell was probably the better actor, but Trapper was the better character in my opinion.

Mike was the better dramatic actor in my opinion, but I thought Wayne had that comic timing that Mike didn't have. So different, but both good.
