It seems that whenever a principal character is killed off, the show feels that, while not totally ignoring the presence of the dearly departed character, it needs to temporarily try to fill the vacancy left by the character with something else that the audience will hopefully accept. And yet that can't be accomplished if ties to that character are brought up even only occasionally. It keeps the show stuck and serves only to remind the audience of what the show is trying to replace. Mind you, I don't agree with this logic, but it happens all of the time. Remember when Edith Bunker died on Archie Bunker's Place? Before she was killed off, tons of her relatives/friends came by the house, especially when it was All in the Family, but the moment she was killed off, none of them were heard from again except those tied to the other cast, such as Archie (when Gloria visited) or Stephanie. I mean, shouldn't have Maude made a visit? Or Irene? Or the Jeffersons? Very interesting... Ed |

They should have them appear this season...like for example Cate gets a letter, and it says that Paul's parents are on their way from China, where they were missionaries, and they didn't hear the news till six months later, but couldn't come due to delays.

Here are some casting thoughts to play Paul's Mom or Dad: Paul's Mom: Betty White, Chloris Leachman, Mary Tyler Moore, or Carol Burnett, Rue Mcclanahan Paul's Dad: Gavin McCloud, Dick Van Dyke, Tim Conway |

Cloris Leachman would be good too...I've seen her in Malcolm in the Middle.

How about Jason Ritter as one of Paul's relatives? Have him as the son of Paul's father's brother or sister, thus explaining the resemblance to "Papa H."
And on Cate's side of the family, Jim's brother Walter could have a grandson who looks like, as one woman put it, a "better-looking Josh Hartnett." |

I do know that the show's been off the air; they were post-cancellation thoughts. |

It did bother me that none of Paul's relatives were ever on the show. I even thought right after John's death that maybe on the show maybe Paul's parents would be introduced.
