Default The Goldbergs Two-Disc Set DVD Review

Yoo-hoo, Mrs. Bloom! The Goldbergs are on DVD in a release from Timeless Media Group. The two disc release presents 10 episodes of the TV series that started in the very early days of television (1949) that was based upon a successful radio series that began decades earlier. The series stars Gertrude Berg as Molly Goldberg and Robert Harris as her husband, Jake, and is about a Jewish family trying to make it in New York while balancing traditional Jewish ideas and contemporary American society.

Cool

Sounds great - I'll have to check it out one of these days. I have never seen this show before. Thanks for the review.

If anyone gets this please tell us what you think of it and how it plays. I'll probably get it eventually. It's cheap enough and I figured it wasn't the best quality anyway but its the only way anyone will probably ever see this show.. I do have the 1950 theatrical movie Molly that I taped off AMC in the early 90's and I did enjoy that.

The review link has been updated. The video quality is pretty terrible according to the review. Amazon.com says it will ship in 3-6 weeks.

Default The quality is probably terrible...

...because kinescopes of live TV shows- those that managed to survive- weren't always preserved in good condition over the years. Once a live TV show was over, it was forgotten; if it was preserved on "kinescope film", it was usually thrown out by the network (or station) that saved it, after a period of time. This is why Gertrude Berg decided to take a chance by syndicating "THE GOLDBERGS" as a first-run filmed series in the fall of 1955; unfortunately, most viewers had become used to "all-american" families featured in "lighter" filmed sitcoms of the time, and didn't care for more drama than comedy in those shows, as Gertrude (and son Cherney) wrote for "THE GOLDBERGS". The title was also a hurdle- some stations said it was "too ethnic", and some viewers saw the show on local stations under the title "MOLLY". In any case, the series ended after 39 filmed episodes, and that was it. Of course, I don't know if the two-disc set features the filmed series, or the original "live" CBS shows from 1949-'51 yet....

From what I've read, it is from the syndicated filmed episodes.
