I think I know what you mean... Happy Days had a long-term and deep effect on America. It became a part of the society! It was like it stopped being a show, and started being a government service... something that would just always be there.
I think that The Cosby Show, Cheers, and Friends all fall into that same category of shows that people would watch simply because it WAS that show. For a sit-com to hit that level of social acceptance is a rare and beautiful thing. ------------------ Be sure to click here and check out my web page! What else are you gonna do? |

As for long-running, I'd have to say The Simpsons & Married... With Children, & both are immensely popular, although I think Married... With Children had more effect than The Simpsons does.

I donno Mr. T. But I do know that your question has been inspired by my previous question 'Do you watch any other sitcom loyally'.
Admit it buddy!!!! By the way, I think the answer is Friends and Simpsons [This message has been edited by hareeth (edited 07-12-2000).] |

Married With Children has more impact than The Simpsons? I beg to differ! I never saw a line of MWC action figures, t-shirts, and every other piece of crap you could stick the show's logo on! Although MWC is definately up there on the list of shows that are as popular, it is not anywhere NEAR the Simpsons!

Hello,
Well I can think of a show that did real well in the ratings from day one and went on to do well, but trailed off at the end. The Beverly Hillbillies. When it came out, it became the highest rated tv show of it's time with its' premiere. It was on from 62. However, I don't know if it lasted as long, however, Happy Days wasn't as good in its waining days. Also, the Hillbillies went through a transition of black and white to color as Andy Griffith did also. Http://msnhomepages.talkcity.com/lib.../c3po5/ash.htm Please viist this site. |

OH yeah you're right! I think the reason the Hillibillies ratings went down is because they changed script writters after a while and if you'll notice some of the shows are funnier than other an thats the reason.

I don't know how popular they were, but The Jeffersons and All in the Family/Archie's Place were definitely long-running...
------------------ "Well, Laverne is sort of childish" "Childish? Childish? COming from a grown woman who throws tea parties for her stuffed cat!" "Well at least I don't sew L's on everything I wear!" "Well that would be pretty stupid considering your name's Shirley!" |

"I Love Lucy" and its immediate one-hour secessor "The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour" together ran just as long as "Happy Days". And because it morphed into a hour-long version for the last three years, it's really more of an accomplishment. But beyond the mere numbers, Lucille Ball dominated television to an incredible extent. When she became pregnant and gave birth to "Little Ricky" the whole world was watching. There's never been anything like it since. (In television that is...The Beatles did the same thing to music)
So yes, there is a sitcom which ran just as long and had a greater impact than "Happy Days". Now don't kill the messenger, I like "Happy Days" better too. And it did have more spin-offs than "I Love Lucy". |
