Smile MAG: pre-shipwreck

ok Im, here is the story u requested! Sorry if it wasn't what you were looking for, this was actually more difficult than I expected!
(please read n review )

Disclaimer: Don't own MaryAnn or Gilligan. This idea was prompted by Im. Thanks.

Friday night had finally come. It had been a long week and Gilligan was ready to kick back and have some sort of fun. He decided to head over to Bob’s Surf Shack, the local hangout for most of the teens in the area.
“Hey, there you are kid, we were wondering where you were,” Steve said, a bikini clad blonde sitting on his lap. Steve was a hard core surfer who was the very image of cool. He owned just about every record on the Billboard’s top 100, talked smoother than a salesman, and had dated practically every girl in Honolulu. Gilligan was glad Steve was his friend because someday he was going to be just like him, motorcycle and all. Well, except all the girl’s. Gilligan couldn’t really understand what was so neat about such a responsibility, especially since girls seemed more interested in flowers than rock and roll.
“Yeah! Hey guess what, there’s a party down at the South-Side beach tonight. A bunch of us were gonna go,” Gilligan’s best friend, Skinny Mulligan, chimed in excitedly.
“Really?! That sounds swell!”
Steve laughed. “Alright, seeya tonight kids.”
So Gilligan and Skinny walked around doing nothing much for the rest of the afternoon until finally it was party time.
“Whoa! There sure are a bunch of people here!” Gilligan shouted over the music and crowd.
“Yeah, how cool is this! Hey, lets see if we can find Steve,” Skinny replied, motioning towards the general crowd.
Gilligan and Skinny began racing through the people, laughing at themselves, already having a good time. Gilligan stopped somewhat abruptly to catch his breath, which resulted in Skinny crashing into him, which in turn sent Gilligan to knock over…
MaryAnn, flustered and embarrassed, looked around to see who or what had ran into her
“Hey, are you okay? I’m really sorry; I didn’t mean to run into you.”
“I’m fine,” MaryAnn replied, taking the boy’s outstretched hand to pull herself up.
“Are you sure you’re okay, I’d feel really bad if I ruined the party for you,” he assured her.
“No, you didn’t hurt me, you just… uh, caught me off guard,” she laughed, smiling warmly to reaffirm her words.
“Oh, that’s good,” Gilligan answered, laughing along. Thanks to the moonlight and some nearby tiki torches, Gilligan could now see the girl’s face clearly. He must have ate something funny, he decided as he felt like something was flying around in his stomach. “Say, are you from around here?”
“No. I’m actually from Kansas; I’m on vacation.”
“Oh, that’s cool. Welcome to this island sometimes known as Honolulu, Hawaii to be exact,” Gilligan said, making a sweeping bow with his hat.
The girl laughed and noted, “Hey, you’re pretty funny.”
“Really?” he asked in excitement. Most people described him as stupid, never something as nice as funny. “I’m Gilligan, what’s your name?”
“My name’s MaryAnn Summers,” she replied. Gilligan, she thought to herself, it was a name you’d associate with happiness and lighthearted memories.
“Oh, and this is my friend, Skinny Mulligan,” Gilligan added.
“Hi.”
“Heya, heya,” Steve said as he sauntered up to the gathering. Eyeing MaryAnn, he asked, “Well, well, well… who have we got here?”
“It’s Gilligan’s new date,” Skinny quipped with a grin.
MaryAnn and Gilligan looked at each other with confused faces, bonding together in the midst of the uncomfortable situation.
“Oh, no, well, I kind of ran into her,” he admitted. “Literally.”
“Boy Gilligan, you sure do have all the luck, huh,” Steve chuckled, giving MaryAnn a wink along with a wolf-like-smile. “See you cats later.”
Something like annoyance sparked up briefly inside of Gilligan for reasons he couldn’t place.
“Come on Gilligan, let’s go get closer to the music,” Skinny said, getting bored with the talking.
“Ok. Well, it was really nice meeting you,” he said somewhat reluctantly.
“Yeah,” MaryAnn replied awkwardly. “Hey, um. Do you think it’d be ok, well could I hang out with you guys? I really don’t know any body here.”
Gilligan perked up at this while Skinny shrugged and answered, “Sure, why not.”
They went on dancing and singing, laughing at the smallest of things. After awhile, however, they began to tire of all the dancing.
“Hey, I’ve got an idea,” Gilligan shouted over the music. “Why don’t we go see that new sci-fi movie, The Bird People Meet the Chicken-Plucker’s.
“Hey, that sounds swell,” Skinny agreed.
“How about it MaryAnn?” Gilligan asked eagerly.
A bright smile filled her pretty face. “You want me to come along?”
“Of course, why wouldn’t we?”
“Oh gee, let’s go!”
They walked over to the nearest movie theatre, bought their tickets and sat down just as the feature began. Midway through the movie, Skinny was getting restless and decided to head back to the party. Gilligan and MaryAnn sat watching the movie intently. So engrossed were they, that it wasn’t until Gilligan practically jumped out of his seat at a climax did they realize that Skinny had left.
He grinned sheepishly at MaryAnn who smiled back warmly and asked, “Scared?”
“No, are you?”
She laughed and shook her head.
They went back to staring at the screen, their thoughts straying from the actual film. Now Gilligan felt embarrassed that he’d acted so afraid. Most girls would have made fun of him but she had been entirely good-natured about it. Then he also realized that most girls would have been scared themselves. MaryAnn must be awfully brave. He came to the conclusion that she was definitely different from most girls.
As MaryAnn watched a kissing scene between the love interest of the movie, she found her thoughts wandering. She couldn’t help but wonder what it’d be like to be kissed like that. So sure that it was true love nothing could deter the romance.
Gilligan watched this same scene and had the strange flashback of seeing Steve and some girl kissing at the movies, paying no attention to the film. He appreciated the fact that MaryAnn actually seemed to care about what the movie was about. All of the other girls Gilligan knew were obsessed with kissing and hugging; they never wanted to talk about music and movies, or read comic books.
The movie ended, and MaryAnn and Gilligan decided against staying for the second feature.
“Well, that was a pretty good movie,” he said as they walked down the street.
“Yeah, I’m really glad I could come along.”
“Are you going back to that party?”
“No, I think I’d better get back to my hotel,” MaryAnn said sadly.
“Oh,” Gilligan replied, “Ok, well, it is pretty late. Do you want me to walk with you?”
MaryAnn smiled both inwardly and outwardly at this. Did he realize the pretenses of this suggestion? No, she decided, he was just being polite.
“Thanks, I’d really appreciate it. I was kind of nervous that someone might beat me up if I was walking by myself. Now you can protect me.”
Gilligan laughed then said, “Well, I’d hate to see anybody hurt a girl like you.” He was glad it was dark out so MaryAnn couldn’t see that the was blushing. How and from where did that slip out? “A girl like you.” Luckily, MaryAnn made no further comment on the subject.
As they walked to the hotel, they were deep in conversation, mostly about the movie they’d just seen. Their laughter at a joke Gilligan had made died down sadly as they reached the hotel.
“Here we are,” MaryAnn said somewhat ruefully.
“Yeah…”
The two stood quietly, looking up at the looming hotel, wondering what to say.
Finally MaryAnn broke the silence, “Gilligan, tonight was a lot of fun. More fun than I’ve had in a long time, actually. I’m really glad someone as swell as you ran into me.”
“Really? Thanks, I had fun too. I wish you weren’t just visiting,” he admitted with a self-conscious grin.
“I know,” she said in a melancholy voice. “It was really nice meeting you. Well, goodbye Gilligan.”
He smiled sadly and replied, “Bye MaryAnn.”
They departed with a wave, neither one knowing that they would in fact be reunited for a much longer duration in just a few days.

as you might have noticed, i don't have a title for this... so I am more than open to suggestions!

I loved it!!! How sweet!

What about a title like "A Girl Like You" to recall the lines toward the end...?

Sorry, I just got to read this today. I didn't even know it was up before this. But it is very cute! Interesting touch--the way you linked it to the actual show's events at the end.
