Default Mo'nique Defends The 'N' Word

Actress Mo'nique has defended black musicians who use the word "n$#@%r" in their lyrics, insisting it is a term of endearment. The comedienne believes African-Americans have a responsibility to banish the negativity surrounding the word and is keen to reclaim it as an accepted term among the black population.

She says, "Do I use the word n$#@%r? Yes, in my comedy routine and in life because it's our word. Here's the thing. We need to stop giving people the power over that word. We take it and turn it around to make it beautiful. You see, they gave us that word back then. They called us n$#@%r back then.

"So yes, I hold on to it. And I say it to the n$#@%rs, keep doing your thing with pride and honor. Look how we overcame. Her name is Oprah Winfrey. His name is Shawn Carter. Her name is Condoleezza Rice. Look at them n$#@%rs."

I can understand the part about not allowing people the power to continue to put us down. What I do not understand is of all words, why the one that has kept us down for centuries ;a word that made our culture hate ourselves for years has become a term of endearment. Why would anyone want to associate themselves with a term created by a group oppressors. It doesn't add up. I get damn offended when someone calls me that.

I agree. As a black person, I don't consider it a term of endearment either. I wish I could personally take that word and erase it from everybody's brain.

I still love Mo'Nique, but I strongly disagree with her on this issue.

It seems like the only people who want to continue to use that word are celebs who "rely" on that word to sell CD's and for comedy routines.

God, Richard Pryor used to say that word all the time, it was never like it is now.

While watching Sanford & Son on DVD, I did a double take when I heard the "N" word uttered. No way could anyone do that today and get away with it. I'm white but never understood how that word became a term of endearment amongst some blacks. If a WHITE person tried to use that as a term of endearment to a black person, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson would be in front of your house with a camera crew so fast it would make your head spin.

Ain't that the truth.
Back in the 70's, the word or term mostly used was "blood".

From now on, I'm going to call everyone I know; my friends, family, anyone close to me - a$$hole.

I am trying to take the power of that word from people. You know, turn it around an make it beautiful.

What up a$$hole!

See?

I'm using it in a good way, not an offensive way like the word a$$hole has always been used.

I love that. That was too funny. I don't consider it as a term of endearment. I don't care if it comes out of the mouth of a black person or a white person, I don't want to be referred to as one.
