That's right. I was eleven years old when "The Chipmunk Song (Christmas
Don't Be Late)" was first played on the radio. They looked like that in
their first Dell comic book, too (THE THREE CHIPMUNKS 4-Color #1042) and
when they appeared on THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW as hand puppets. Three
years later, they were redesigned in a simpler style for the animated THE
ALVIN SHOW, which debuted on Wednesday nights on CBS in prime-time.
They underwent another change for "The Chipmunk Christmas" TV special
(courtesy of animation legend Chuck Jones) and, finally, as they appeared
in ALVIN & THE CHIPMUNKS and "The Chipmunk Movie." But probably not
too many people realize that they began as recording stars.

also, the alvin show first debuted in 1961, 46 years or so ago- and yet this was released 20 years ago until my birth in 1981 and the 80s remake came out in 1985.

here are the intros to the 80s and 90s renditions of alvin and the chipmunks. personally, i prefer the 90s one myself

i also liked the intro to 'the chipmunks go to the movies'

Of course, at this point, they were designs only for album covers and hadnt really been humanised for a cartoon series yet.....I once saw a "Chipmunks Game" at an antique store with the chips drawn this same way ...the only thing they have in common with the modern version is Alvin wearing a red sweater with an "A" on it

i think that as the years went on, their design and look changed dramatically. i actually liked the 88/89 look when the show was taken over by DiC entertainment

Speaking of changes, originally Chip and Dale looked exactly alike, after a couple of films, Dale was given a red nose, crazy teeth and fuzzy head fur to make him more comical looking....and, with the personality to match

Chip 'n' Dale were annoying -- but they were smarter than Donald Duck!
