FORMER Big Brother housemate Gordon Sloan has died in China of a suspected drug overdose.

The 34-year-old, a housemate in the original series in 2001, collapsed 12 days ago in Beijing and died on Wednesday in a city hospital.

Details about exactly what happened are sketchy, but reports suggested that Sloan might have overdosed or been deliberately drugged.

His parents, brother and sister had travelled to Beijing from their home of New Zealand to be with their son.

Sloan had made headlines in 2002 for leaving his job in Sydney to join a human shield peace protest in Baghdad.

Fellow Big Brother housemate Jemma Gawned said yesterday she was shocked by the news.

"I heard he was sick but it didn't sink in -- we thought it was Chinese whispers and we were keeping our fingers crossed," she said tearfully.

"You don't realise how attached you are to someone. We shared an intense time.

"We know he loved to go out, have a good time and push boundaries, but taking drugs to this extent is completely out of character."

wow what a sad story. does anyone else feel like there have been a lot of deaths in the news recently (like of famous/semi famous people)?
