Completists Beware: You won't find 2 shorts on tomorrow's T+J release... - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

The third and final volume of TOM AND JERRY is coming to DVD tomorrow in a collectible two-disc set, containing the remaining shorts Hanna-Barbera has to offer us and a couple of brand-new extras. Most of this we know already, but TSoD reported yesterday that two shorts are missing from this release, so before you go frantic trying to find these episodes somewhere on one of the menus of these discs, don't hold your breath. For racial issues, two shorts have been omitted from this original TOM AND JERRY DVD swan-song. Those shorts go by the names of "Casanova Cat" and "Mouse Cleaning". It's really sad that these two shorts had to be omitted, because even if they did have an abundance of racial stereotypes spread throughout these particular seven-minute pieces, there's NOTHING we can do bypass the fact that THESE SHORTS WERE MADE and should be shown in their full context on the final volume of this classic cartoon series which, if it included "Casanova" and "Cleaning," would make for a complete TOM AND JERRY collection. Though they may be shocking, they are statements on how the world used to be and offer a chance for reflection today on how these stereotypes have pretty much disappeared over a half-century later. We can't erase history: we must acknowledge and embrace the faults of the world, as well as our society's good points that have existed since the world begun. We're constantly making mistakes and fifty years from now we'll notice that our opinions were once flawed, look back on those mistakes and learn from them. If we choose to ignore these reflections on how life used to be, we're not really ignoring the world, but rather ourselves. In the words of Billy Joel, "We're only human. We're SUPPOSED to make mistakes."

Warner did include some volume two shorts that contained racial stereotypes with a disclaimer from Whoopi Goldberg, who gave introductions on that release, who acknowledged the fact that some of the stereotypes may seem cruel but it's just how the world was back then. Can these racial stereotypes included in "Casanova Cat" and "Mouse Cleaning" really be worse than those minor ones included in volume two's shorts? I think the world is ready for truth, Warner, and even if it isn't, TOM AND JERRY completists are.
