This was one of the greatest dramas ever produced for television. It featured John Housman as the famed contract law Professor Charles W. Kingsfield, who was both idolized and feared by his students for his no-nonsense approach to teaching and learning. Several people that I know who went to law school, were actually stunned by the realistic acting and the dramatic tension of the series. This wonderful drama was based on the great 1973 theatrical movie of the same name. John Housman was absolutely brilliant in his role as the demanding professor. Even more interesting was that the cases discussed in the series where actual legal cases. I learned that the series itself was filmed at Harvard Law School. (The writers on the series worked with the particulars of legal issues with actual lawyers to maintain realism in the show.) The only thing was, when the series ran on CBS it only ran for one season (The fall of 1978) PBS picked it up and reran it in the summer of 1979. Showtime picked it up for the 1984-1986 season with new episodes. The pay service got rave reviews for it, using the same main charactors as the original series. (Except it had taken them 8 "years" to graduate from law school instead of the traditional three years!)
I recall seeing this under-rated gem on the Nostalga Channel in the early to mid 90's. Is this series being rerun on any network? This would certainly be one to pick up. For anyone who has felt the stresses of college, medical school, or law school, this really was a must see program! Jack |
