The overall qaulity on Season 1 is pretty good. But I was upset to see this in one of the early episodes.

Yes, very unfortunately, that tear in the Sinkable Mrs.Brown episode , perhaps came from damage to the film negative as it first appeared in the 1983-87 syndication run. There is also similar damage in the episode "Unidentified Flying Uncle Martin" when Tim is waiting on the driveway.

I saw that one too. That's a big crack in the film. Does Season 2 or 3 have any big tears in the film?

I don't think so.
I have not watched all the episodes, but in Season 2 there is video distortion in the closing scene of "Martin's favorite martian" and also in the opening of "Miss Pringle".In both cases, that is something new--older versions of these shows in syndication are fine. The worst damage is to the sound track in the last line of the second act in the 1st season episode "Peaches".That damage only appeared when the show started airing on TV LAND in 2000. Unfortunately, that was the print that RHINO got for the dvd. |

I also thought that 3 double-sided discs on hinges was very cheap! They could have at least made sturdy boxes, and not not those hinged plastc cases.

...the series was "out of print" for a long time, and there was some damage in the original negatives due to inactivity and improper storage in the vaults.
Offhand, the show looks great in its "new" prints...much better than those years between 1966 and the early '80s when the "Wolper" 16mm prints were used in syndication (these are the ones that eliminated the final credit, "Produced By Jack Chertok Television Inc. in association with The CBS Television Network", and substituted the "Distributed by Wolper Television Sales"/Wolper logo frame instead). By the time David Wolper's company was absorbed by Telepictures, they managed to dig up the original negatives, and started using those.... |

You will be happy to know that the "crack" is not in the master negative, it is only in the 1982 Telepictures transfer.
That is the sub-master that was used for that episode. |
