"THE COP & THE KID"? It was a short-lived sitcom on NBC, sometime in the mid 70s

Vaguely. My mother and I watched that show. Charles Durning (later of
EVENING SHADE) starred in it. Old-time movie actress Patsy Kelly (who often teamed with Thelma Todd) also had a regular role, as the cop's mother. For the record, it aired on NBC from Dec. 4, 1975 to Mar. 4, 1976. Another ethnic comedy (the cop was white; the kid, black), it told the story of a middle-aged Irish cop who, through a strange circumstance, found himself assigned custody of a young, black orphan. Sort of like DIFF'RENT STROKES (before that show came to exist). |

...the idea of this show was to emulate "CHICO AND THE MAN", 'tv star collector' [just as its companion show on the NBC Thursday night schedule, "GRADY", was to evoke memories of "SANFORD AND SON" by giving its second banana his own series]. BOTH of those shows are in their respective archives {SONY/"GRADY" and VIACOM-Paramount/"THE COP AND THE KID"}, waiting to be unleashed on an unsuspecting world......
