Default Look at All the Cast Changes

I know this has been talked about before. But I thought I'd write up the season by season cast list, just to show off all the cast changes.

Season 1: 1968-1969
Doris Day as Doris Martin
Denver Pyle as Buck Webb
James Hampton as Leroy B. Simpson
Philip Brown as Billy Martin
Tod Starke as Toby Martin
Fran Ryan as Aggie Thompson (episodes 1-10)
Naomi Stevens as Juanita (episodes 11-28)

Season 2: 1969-1970
Doris Day as Doris Martin
Denver Pyle as Buck Webb
Philip Brown as Billy Martin
Tod Starke as Toby Martin
McLean Stevenson as Michael Nicholson
Rose Marie as Myrna Gibbons
Paul Smith as Ron Harvey

Season 3: 1970-1971
Doris Day as Doris Martin
Philip Brown as Billy Martin
Tod Starke as Toby Martin
McLean Stevenson as Michael Nicholson
Rose Marie as Myrna Gibbons
Paul Smith as Ron Harvey
Kaye Ballard as Angie Palucci
Bernie Kopell as Louie Palucci

Season 4: 1971-1972
Doris Day as Doris Martin
John Dehner as Cy Bennett
Jackie Joseph as Jackie Parker

Season 5: 1972-1973
Doris Day as Doris Martin
John Dehner as Cy Bennett
Jackie Joseph as Jackie Parker

It seemed silly to go from the big cast, all of a sudden to just have three main characters.

I liked the early seasons better.

Default Hi

My favorite seasons were 1-3. I didn't care for 4-5 very much.

The show went downhill when McLean Stevenson, and Rose Marie left. And John Dehner and Jackie Joseph came in, in my personal opinion.

I'm a bit confused. Like the first poster in this thread, I had always been under the impression that there was an entirely new cast in the fourth season, other than Doris, of course. But check out these links to a "Doris Day Show" episode guide for seasons 4 and 5:

http://www.dorisdaytribute.com/thedo...ow-season4.htm
http://www.dorisdaytribute.com/thedo...ow-season5.htm

According to this episode guide, the characters of Angie and Louie Palucci continued into the fourth and fifth seasons. In fact, there are several episodes in the fourth season episode guide that specifically mention the Angie Palucci (Kaye Ballard) character. So it appears that this character at least lasted that far into the series. Can anyone comment on this? Also, a friend told me that in the fourth season, though the two sons no longer appeared on the show, in Doris' apartment there were pictures of them on the mantle, indicating they were still in Doris' life. But by the fifth season, the two sons were no longer mentioned, and Doris was referred to as "Miss" Doris Martin, as if she had never been married before.

I just got the cast info from a TV book I have. I'm glad to hear that at least the Palucci's continued into the fourth season. It seemed so odd to me that no one but Doris returned for the fourth season. I thought maybe it was something like "The Joey Bishop Show." How in the second season, only Joey returned and it was a completely different show. That's why they started the DVDs with season 2.

It seems they not only started in season 2, but ended there as well. I bought the "Joey Bishop Show" season 2 DVD hoping I'd see more, but now it's been more than a year since the season 2 DVD release and still no season 3.

I'm hoping MPI will take over "The Joey Bishop Show" and "Make Room for Daddy." I don't like how they removed the opening credits from the episodes. Hopefully if MPI ever did release those shows, they'd start with their first seasons and with the opening credits.

Okay, there is even more continuity on this show than I had thought, now that I've had the chance to see all of the second season episodes and become more familiar with the show. In the second season, a couple characters who started popping up from time to time were Mr. Jarvis and Colonel Fairburn. Apparently in the third season, when Doris rents that swanky new apartment, Mr. Jarvis winds up being her neighbor in the building. And if you look at the season 4 and 5 links below, you will see that Mr. Jarvis is still around in those two seasons, and in the fifth season when the Angie and Louie Palucci leave the show (they were introduced in the third season and continue into the fourth), Mr. Jarvis becomes her new landlord. Colonel Fairburn continues to pop up on the show into the fifth and final season. So given that Doris is still living in the same apartment in season five that she lived in with her two sons in season three, is still interacting with some of the same characters in season five that she had interacted with back in the second season, this clearly must be the same Doris Martin. So that begs the question: how did this seemingly intelligent widow and loving mother of two come to believe, later on, that she was a single woman, never married, and unaware that she had two sons? Should someone have had this woman committed? Did her daddy, Buck, and the kids just abandon her in her state of amnesia? Couldn't the Pallucci's or Mr. Jarvis or Mr. Fairburn have stepped in helped as they were all fully aware of Doris's past? Is Doris's world as cynical and uncaring as all that?

I love Mr. Jarvis. I'm glad to find out he stays with the show. Before the DVDs I didn't even know he existed. The TV book didn't have him credited as a cast member.

I would've written in something to the effect that Doris's children went to live on the farm with Buck for a while to explain thier absense?
