The Superman shorts were produced between 1941 and 1943. Sources vary on production costs from between $50,000 to $100,000 per episode. Either way, Superman was the most expensively produced cartoon to date.
Voice actors Bud Collyer and Joan Alexander reprised their roles from the Superman radio drama as Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane. Also, Joe Shuster, one of the creators of Superman, drew the model sheets of Lois Lane, Clark Kent, and Superman for the series. Let's listen to entire podcast courtesy of "Animation Station" with Tad & Andrew discussing about Flesicher's "Superman" shorts. Fleischer Studio's Superman as heard on "Animation Station" |

Funny thing too, about that high price for those tunes....When approached by Paramount to make the Superman cartoons, Max Fleisher didnt really want the job, so , when asked what he wanted per episode, Fleisher replied $50,000 per episode, thinking that Paramount would never pay that much, and he'd be off the hook.....unfortunately, he was given the huge budget he asked for, and had no choice but to produce the cartoons!! The results were prety amazing though, they are some of the best cartoon shorts ever made and inspired the look of Batman the animated series and the look of anime ( The whole fully painted look, incl shadows, is something anime is known for, but, it was the Superman cartoons that did it first )
