I used to read them when I was about 8 or 9 and it would usually take me about half an hour to finish them - particularly if I kept making the wrong choices and ended up getting killed off pretty quickly.

I know Joe was exaggerating, but I suppose it could take ten minutes to finish if you made several really poor choices early on and ended up dying. Sometimes I used to cheat and recall the number of the page on which I'd made the choice, so if something horrible happened to me, I could go back and choose the other one.
