I remember this show from my early childhood. Did the Nanny have magical powers? If so was there ever a reason given why she did? Just some vague memories from long ago. Sean |

I always thought that Nanny had a little bit of magic and Pychic abilities combined--she was able to forsee a lot of things and say or plan things in anticipation---which shocked the professor at first! She also used her magic to "nudge" events or situations to steer things in the right direction, when they would have otherwise turned out bad. All this she did out of love.

She did seem to have some magical powers, but she was much more low-key about them, unlike, say, Samantha from "Bewitched".

Mystical and Magical...
According to the theme song by Nilsson, Nanny (Juliet Mills) was a "mystical, magical nanny." As the previous post said, she was magical in a low-key way -- there was know Jeannie-like "blink" or Samantha-like "twitch of the nose" or Endora-like "wave of the arms."
One of her ongoing magical themes throughout the series is that she would say "I'll get the door" and the Professor would say, "No one's at the door" and then the doorbell would ring. Likewise with the phone. The writers of the show did a good job toying with exactly who this Nanny is and what she can do. Her "powers" are never discussed. Nice touch of mystery for the character. |
