Exclamation Highway to Heaven DVD?

Anybody who might have brought or rented the HTH DVD's... ARe they captioned? The Amazon site says it is, but none of the other sites say it is, and when I saw the HTH set at Target today, it didn't have a CC symbol on the game. I'm not about to spend $60, only to find out it isn't captioned... I'm going to be really bummed if it isn't, because I saw it on TVL and really want the DVD set. Thanks!

I just sent an email to the person who reviewed it for ClassicTVHits.com, so I'll let you know as soon as he responds and confirms it one way or the other, unless someone else has the answer by then.

I am just curious, could you explain to me the difference between captions and subtitles? I've seen DVD's that list having both, I always thought they were one and the same.

Well, subtitles don't have the black background that regular captioning would have. Most of the time the letters are white, outlined with black but sometimes the letters are yellow. I HATE subtitles - you have to be sitting in front of the TV to be able to read it...

With regular captioning, the letters are white, completely encased in a black background.

Subtitles:

Closed captioning:

If a DVD set says it's subtitled, it'll just say "Subtitles - English, ______" since they usually include a foreign language subtitle along with English subtitles.

If a DVD set says it's closed captioned, there are two different symbols I can look for on the box.

or

Hope that answered your question!

thanks for the heads up. If a DVD isn't captioned but has subtitles in English, would that prevent you from buying it?

I hope captions on DVD are more accurate than the ones they have on tv here. The TV I have has caption ability, so sometimes if I am having a hard time understanding what somebody is saying, due to a thick accent (you'd be surprised how it translates everything Kenny says on South Park, since he speaks all muffled and uncomprehensible), I'll turn the closed-captions on and it'll translate it. But I know on news broadcasts and the sort, that the writing is slow (usually showing up 5-10 seconds late) and they won't always say the dialogue the newscasters use, and they do a lot of paraphrasing.

I hope on DVD it isn't as bad. But I suppose it's different when it's been prepared for months for sale, instead of having someone typing out what he hears on live tv trying to keep up with the anchors.

I buy 'em anyway. The Murder, She Wrote S1 set is subtitled, and I brought it. I can't think of any other sets I own that are like that...

That is correct - I usually don't watch my local news anyway, they are a lot better and more quick about captioning national news on networks like CNN and the like. So if I watch the news, it's usually FOX News or CNN.

No, nothing yet. Either the guy doesn't check his email or he's ignoring me. I'll try again.

Hm, looks like you haven't heard from him

I'm getting frustrated - it's not THAT hard for websites to provide me with accurate info. If it wasn't so f'ing expensive, I'd get it. =/

Yeah, it is. I saw it on TVL and wanted to get the set...but I got pissed off on release day when I went to Target. I looked at the box for ANY signs that it was close captioned, like it is on TVL right now. I looked around at websites like Amazon, DDD and DVDPlanet...One of them said the set is CC'd but the rest say no.

It's been nearly 2 months since I originally asked that question. Well?

Amazon is saying that the upcoming S2 DVD is CC'd, DVD Planet and Deep Discount DVD aren't indicating it, either.

I STILL want to get the HTH sets, but the first set is awfully expensive.

Allison, I'll rent one of the HTH DVDs from Netflix. I won't be able to get one until next week, though (they don't ship on Saturdays).

Yay! Thanks

Be sure to check for both captions/subtitles on the set. You have to turn on the caption on your TV set for it to come up on DVD sets, just a FYI.
