Default Louis-Dreyfus to Return As Sitcom Mom

Louis-Dreyfus to Return As Sitcom Mom

NEW YORK (AP) - Get out! Former "Seinfeld" star Julia Louis-Dreyfus will play the title role in a new CBS sitcom "Old Christine," which is on the network's midseason roster.

Louis-Dreyfus will play a divorced mother and owner of a women's 30-minute-workout gym who must contend with her ex-husband's new young girlfriend, also named Christine, CBS said Friday.

No other cast members were announced.

Louis-Dreyfus, 44, won an Emmy for her role as Elaine Benes on NBC's "Seinfeld," which ran from 1990-1998. She had a short-lived sitcom, "Watching Ellie," in 2002. Former "Seinfeld" stars Michael Richards and Jason Alexander also have had shows that flopped. Alexander's most recent comedy, "Listen Up," lasted one year. Earlier this year, Louis-Dreyfus reprised her guest role as Maggie Lizer on Fox's "Arrested Development."

If I'm not mistaken, Listen Up was cancelled.

Thumbs up

Oh cool! I'll have to check it out.

I liked her LONG before Seinfeld when she played on Day By Day so she IS capable of holding her own - just hope its been long enough since Seinfeld that people can drop the Elaine character expectations.

I know - that's why worries me!! It was such a strong character that it's gonna be tough to slough off < big shove to George and a slap for Jerry >

I think it'll all depend on the writing. They need to separate Julia from Elaine.

Exactly - whenever you have really strong writing and good character structure it usually can break that pigeonholed issue.

It's too bad about Listen Up. Julia was good in that Watching Ellie-I thought. She wasn't Elaine. We will have to wait and see.

Julia is a fantastic actress...she really was the only choice every year for best sitcom actress during Seinfeld's run (I do like Helen Hunt as well though, and she was good in Mad About You)...

Julia is perfectly capable of separating any character she plays from her Elaine character... the question is, will the writers on her new show, as well as us fans, allow her to separate herself from Elaine?

A word of caution...a wise man once said, "An Elaine divided against herself, can not stand"

I hate to see it and say it, but I'm beginning to think that we'll never see any of the Seinfeld actors EVER have a successful show again, as talented as they individually are... this may be the most acute example of modern day typecasting that we could possiblyhave... I mean, Jerry obviously doesn't want to do another sitcom... but Julia, Jason and Michael will probably never have success on their own... I hope they do, they are all immensely talented...(and Julia's gorgeous ) one problem is that no one knows how to do sitcoms any more (except the Simpsons, which is still hysterical after all these years)... I mean, what are the writers of Seinfeld doing today? Where are they? The writing on that show was incredible... one thing is, it's a lot easier and cheaper to put on idiotic reality shows now, rather than pay good writers what they're worth... so nobody producing a show today is going to pay what it costs to produce a great sitcom... and, since people apparently watch reality shows, the networks will continue to make them (including the latest one, a reality show staring the Williams sisters... gee, I can't wait to see them play ping-pong against each other...ooo, what a classic match up - spare me).

I'll certainly try to catch Julia's new show (if it's not cancelled before I can find it)... I never did watch an episode of Jason's "Listen Up". I figured it wouldn't be any good...
