Angry Very Underrated

The one thing that I do not get is that this show has been on the air for nine years, and had solid ratings, yet it's still underrated by the critics. For Heaven Sake, this show has outran the most overrated shows of all-time like Diff'rent Strokes, Family Ties, The Cosby Show, Who's The Boss, Growing Pains, and Full House. The critics did the same thing to Night Court. And that pisses me off. This show had made Craig T. Nelson & Shelly Fabrabes win an Emmy, it also made Jerry Van Dyke a superstar for his Big Lots commercial (even though he is a brother of Dick Van Dyke), and it launched Bill ***erbakke's voice acting career for the hit animated series "Spongebob Squarepants". But the one thing that really pisses me off, the show did not make Clare Carey famous at all. She would have been the next big thing in Hollywood, but her lack of appearances on the show as an official cast member had really turned off alot of her fans, and it really killed her acting career. However in 1995, Carey had made her final Coach appearance in a 2-part episode of "Kelly's New Guy", but after that episode, she was casted in many movies & TV shows but didn't get any good roles from those titles.

Here's some amusing fact's: All of Clare Carey's on-screen titles So Little Time, Home Alone 4, & Point Pleasant were at the lowest rate. That means they were awful.

It is strange because I remember watching this show growing up, I remember the characters, but I only remember when someone brings it up. I was shocked to find out it made it nine seasons.

I know it was a good show but I do think it's been lost in the shuffle of other ABC shows and it's a real shame. I'm not sure how that happened, but it did.

What do you mean by "It's been lost in the shuffle"?

Speaking of Crocodile Dundee (my favorite movie), but I'll get you some amusing fact's: I found out that the first Crocodile Dundee movie came out on September 26, 1986 (the day I was born). And I will see Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles to see the coach's daughter.

ABC produced A LOT of great sitcoms in the 1990s, ones that still live on today. Family sitcoms like Full House and Home Improvement get tons of play. Characters like Steve Urkle are embedded in pop culture. Boy Meets World has reached an entire new generation thanks to years on Disney and tons of play on ABC family. Ellen made a bold move that's still talked about today. Roseanne was completely different than basically any television series of its time and Roseanne has made so many comeback attempts that it's impossible to forget her.

I remember Coach being very good but I think syndication and the very nature of other ABC shows led them to being a just a little more memorable even if the quality wasn't as high.

Speaking of Clare. Did you that Point Pleasant was to be her breaktrough show, and would've had a chance to become popular?

I realized that Coach has been on the air for awhile, surprisingly a very few people have heard of this show. Although the show was a little popular, but never gained media attention. That's why it was one of those that were never mentioned on Entertainment Tonight, VH1, E!, or any of that. Nevertheless, it was never as popular as these list of shows: The Cosby Show, Roseanne, Seinfeld, Cheers, Family Ties, Family Matters, Home Improvement, A Different World, The Golden Girls, Full House, Who's The Boss, Growing Pains, Wings, Diff'rent Strokes, The Facts of Life, Gimme A Break, Newhart, Webster, Kate & Allie, and even Night Court.

Coach is truly the most underrated sitcom in the history of television, and it's very dangerously close to being unpopular. After Leave It To Beaver and Munsters, Universal had failed to produce classic sitcoms during the late 70's, 80's, and early '90s. A lot of Universal's sitcoms were short-lived, and most likely unpopular. Coach, Major Dad, Charles In Charge, and Amen were Universal's only long-running sitcoms during the 1980s and early '90s, but they were still underrated. But the two most popular Universal sitcoms is Charles In Charge and Amen. Major Dad would've been more popular if it had stayed on Monday night, instead of moving to Friday night. And did you know that Major Dad was the only popular Universal sitcom to never have syndication? Coach surprisingly did, but didn't do to well.

Here are a list of other sitcoms produced by Universal:
Bustin' Loose (1987-1988) Syndication
Coming of Age (1988) CBS
Delta (1992-1993) ABC
Delta House (1979) ABC
Family Dog (1993) CBS Animated
Fast Times (1986) CBS
Harper Valley P.T.A. (1980-1982) NBC
House Calls (1979-1982) CBS
The Munsters Today (1988-1991) Syndication
The New Leave It to Beaver (1986-1989) WTBS
Nobody's Perfect (1980) ABC
Operation Petticoat (1977-1979) ABC
Parenthood (1990-1991) NBC
Princesses (1991) CBS
Still The Beaver (1985-1986) Disney Channel
Turnabout (1979) NBC
When The Whistle Blows (1980) ABC
All of them didn't last long eh?

The fact and the matter is that Universal wasn't the type of studio for A-List sitcoms. Well Leave It To Beaver and Munsters were on the A-List, but the newer sitcoms were not. Charles In Charles is on the list (maybe), but Coach isn't.

Back to Coach:
I still think that this show deserved more than it did because it aired 200 epidodes and 9 seasons, as well as the excellent cast. Too bad the critics paid no attention to it. Oh well.

Thumbs up

Coach is one of the very few shows that everyone in my family enjoys. The DVDs (as well as some episodes I taped during the original run) still bring belly laughs our way. Craig T. Nelson was perfect as Coach (he reminds me of my dad) and totally earned the Emmy he won for the role.

Coach was very underrated. I was little when the show started but early on I used to laugh a lot at Dauber and Luther's antics. My parents and older siblings liked the show a lot because it wasn't sappy like a lot of other sitcoms that were also on at the time.

Exactly. Remember when Luther and Dauber tried to repave Hayden's game room and ended up covered in cement??

I love Coach, but its shameful how it is treated with any time slots that it ever gets. I know that it used to come on at six in the morning, but I don't know if it still does anymore. I know that it also came on at four on WGN. The sad thing is that they won't air Coach that much, but they'll go ahead and air something like Full House over and over again. Full House was good, but the quality of it just isn't that great and neither are a lot of the other shows that they tent to air twenty four seven.

I haven't seen Home Alone 4. I saw a few episodes of So Little Time and Clare played the mom and she was pretty in the mom role. She also played a mom on Point Pleasant. Point Pleasant was a supernatural/horror/drama show on Fox. It had good acting and good writing. Clare's character was a deeply religious church secretary. Point Pleasant was killed way too soon by Fox. Fox didn't let the show get a bigger audience.
