Just what is that supposed to mean? Why must they throw in that disclaimer?

When Unsolved Mysteries began in the late 1980s, the reality hype was in its infancy (even though reality shows have been around long before UM even existed). So the best explanation is that maybe some people had confused certain reality shows with news broadcasts or newsmagazines (like 60 Minutes or 20/20), and that the disclaimer was there to minimize any confusion.
