“The Accident”
This story takes place about a year before Ward’s death. Wally and the Beaver are married and have kids of their own. Beaver and his wife Jan and their kids live in St. Louis and Wally is living next door with his wife, Mary Ellen and their kids. (Scene 1: Kitchen. June is washing up the last of the lunch dishes by the sink when the phone rings) June: Hello? Oh hi Wally, did you get my message? Wally: Yeah, sure did mom, I was just returning your call. June: Well, the reason I called was to invite you and Mary Ellen and the kids to dinner Friday night. Wally: Oh, ok. That’ll be great. What’s the occasion? June: Well, Beaver called this morning and he and Jan and the kids are coming up for the weekend. He wanted to know if you could come to dinner the night he gets in. Wally: We’d love to! Boy, I can’t believe it’s been 6 months since I’ve seen him! June: Neither can I! I miss him so much. (Ward walks in the kitchen and begins listening to June’s conversation) Wally: Me too. Boy this is going to be great. I better get off now though mom, I promised Mary Ellen I would clean out the gutters. June: Ok, son. I’ll talk to you soon. Wally: Bye mom. June: Bye. Ward: Oh, did Wally finally call you back? June: Oh, yes and he’s so excited about Beaver’s visit. Ward: Well, I am going to go down to the hardware store, is there anything you need from the supermarket? June: Oh, I’m glad you asked me that. Ward: Uh oh. Sounds like I have my work cut out for me. June: Oh stop it Ward, I just need some flour and some chocolate chips. You know Teddy is going to want some of his favorite chocolate chip cookies as soon as he walks through the door! Ward: Oh yes. Well, I’m off. Be back in a little while dear. (kisses June on the cheek) June: Ok dear. Oh and I also need brown sugar and a gallon of milk. Ward: (sarcastically) Yes dear. (Ward walks out the door) (Scene 2: Living Room, Beaver and his family have just arrived. Mary Ellen and the kids are already there.) (Doorbell rings) (June opens the door) Beaver: Hi, mom! June: (a few happy tears fill her eyes) Oh Beaver! Oh, I’m so glad you’re finally here! (Hugs beaver tightly). Hello Jan. Jan: Hi June! (Little Teddy comes bursting through the door and runs straight to June and hugs her) Teddy: Grandma! June: Hi, Teddy! Have you been a good boy since the last time we saw you? Teddy: Sure! (Beaver and Jan roll their eyes) June: Ok, well there is a surprise for you in the kitchen, but first go hug your grandpa. Teddy: Ok! Beaver: Hey Mary Ellen! (Hugs her) Mary Ellen: Hi Beaver. It’s so good to see you! Beaver: You too. Where’s Wally? Mary Ellen: Well, he said he was just going to run downtown for a minute and pick up something, but that was over an hour ago. I don’t know what could be keeping him. Beaver: Well, I’m sure he’ll be back in a minute. (Ward joins the crowd after seeing that Teddy is doing ok in the kitchen) Ward: Beaver, good to see you son! (hugs beaver) Beaver: Oh, its good to see you too dad! It’s been too long! June: It certainly has! I do wish you lived closer! Beaver: Well, so do I, but my job just won’t allow it right now. (Looks over at Wally’s kids) Boy, they certainly have grown Mary Ellen! Mary Ellen: Haven’t they? (turns to her kids) You two come hug your uncle and then go in the kitchen with Teddy. (The kids, Amber and Austin, hug beaver and head for the kitchen.) Beaver: What’s for dinner mom? I’m starving! June: Roast beef, carrots, and mashed potatoes, your favorite. Beaver: You remembered! (kisses his mom on the cheek) Jan: I swear June, all the man ever thinks about is food, especially your cooking. Everything I cook is “good, but never quite like mom made it.” (everyone laughs, scene fades out) (Scene 3: Living Room. The scene fades up in the living room. An hour has passed since the last scene and Ward, Beaver, Jan, and June are talking, Mary Ellen is pacing back and forth near the window, worried. Although June is talking, it is obvious something is bothering her as well.) Teddy: (to beaver) Daddy, where’s uncle Wally? I’m hungry! Beaver: Oh, so the 6 cookies you ate earlier wore off, huh? (Teddy smiles a big smile, resembling his father at this age) Mary Ellen: I don’t know what could be keeping Wally! He’s been gone over two hours and he said he would be back in a few minutes. It only takes 15 minutes to go downtown! Ward: Now, Mary Ellen, calm down. I’m sure everything is ok. He probably ran into someone he knew and was held up talking or something. June: I’m worried too, Ward. It’s not like Wally to be this late without phoning to tell us. What if something’s happened? Mary Ellen: Oh, June, do you think something might have happened? I’m so worried! Amber: (to Mary Ellen) Mommy, where’s daddy? Mommy? Ward: Ok kids, why don’t you go up to Uncle Beaver’s old room and watch television. Wally will be home soon and we will have dinner, ok? Kids: Ok, grandpa. Ward: Ok, you two. Just calm down. I admit something may have happened, it IS unlike Wally to be this late, but until we know for sure we need to stop jumping to conclusions. June: But Ward-(June is interrupted by the doorbell) Ward: See, that’s probably him now. (Ward answers the door and finds Eddie Haskell standing there in his uniform. Eddie is now a police officer in Mayfield, but is still the same old Eddie. This time though, Eddie is acting different.) Eddie: Hello, Mr. Cleaver, Mrs. Cleaver. May I come in? Ward: Sure, come on in Eddie, what brings you here? Eddie: It’s about Wally sir, He’s been in a car accident. Mary Ellen: Oh no! Eddie: It was a drunk driver that hit him. Killed him instantly. Wally’s alive, but in pretty bad shape. (Mary Ellen and June begin to cry, Beaver even has to wipe away a tear) Ward: Do you know anything about his condition and where he is now? Eddie: I don’t know much, the paramedics were scrambling trying to help him. He was unconscious and looked pretty bad. I tried to get information out of them, but I didn’t get anywhere. June: Oh dear. Eddie: Instead of riding to the hospital with Wally, I decided to come over here and let you know in person. He’s at Mayfield Memorial. I can escort you there in my police car so you can get there faster. Ward: Thank you Eddie. Come on, let’s go. Jan: You guys go ahead. I’ll stay here with the kids and try to find a sitter. Ward: Are you sure, Jan? Jan: Of course, go be with Wally. Beaver: Thanks dear, see you soon. (kisses her cheek) (Scene 4: The Hospital. Once they arrive, the Cleavers and Eddie are escorted to a conference room to meet with the doctor.) June: I can’t stand this waiting. I want to know how my son is. I don’t understand why they have to cram us in this tiny room and make us wait. Why can’t we just go see Wally? Ward: June, calm down. The doctor will be here soon. (The doctor walks in) Doctor: Hello there, which one of you is Mrs. Cleaver? Mary Ellen: I’m Wally’s wife. Doctor: Ok, Mrs. Cleaver. I’m Doctor Carter. I’ve been taking care of Wallace. June: How is he doctor? Doctor: Well, I’m going to level with you. His condition is very critical at this point. He has several broken bones and some internal bleeding. We also fear he may have a head injury since he’s remained unconscious since he arrived. Ward: What’s his prognosis Doctor? Doctor: Well, sir, at this point he could go either way. It’s hard to tell if he will pull through this or not. I’ve had patients make a full recovery from an accident like this, and to be perfectly honest, I’ve also lost patients with less injury, so now its just a waiting game. But, let me tell you, the longer we wait for him to wake up, the less likely his chances of pulling out of this. I would say, give it about 4 to 5 days and if he’s still the same or worse, his chances are pretty grim. June: (Crying) So you don’t think he will make it? Doctor: I didn’t say that, right now I’d say he has a fifty fifty chance. Beaver: Can we see him now? Doctor: Yes, but only 2 at a time. That’s all that’s allowed in the ICU at a time. If you’ll follow me I will show you to the ICU waiting area. Ward: Thank you doctor. (Scene 5: ICU. Beaver and Mary Ellen decide to go in together first, then Ward and June.) (After seeing Wally, Mary Ellen come out to the waiting room and talk to Ward and June) June: How is he Mary Ellen? Mary Ellen: He’s-(Mary Ellen breaks down crying) June: (Looking at Beaver with fear in her eyes) Beaver? Beaver: (Fighting back tears) Not good mom. He looks pretty bad. His face is all beat up and he’s on a respirator. Mary Ellen’s upset because she tried to get him to squeeze her hand and he didn’t respond. Oh mom, it doesn’t look good. June: (crying) Ward I want to go see him. Ward: Do you think you can do it? June: I don’t know, but I have to see my son. Ward: Ok, then dear. We’ll go. (Ward then puts one arm around June’s waist, and walks her in to see Wally) Beaver: I’d better go call Jan, will you be ok here for a minute? (Mary Ellen doesn’t say anything, just looks up and nods her head) (The scene cuts to Wally’s room in the ICU where Ward and June are standing by him, talking) June: Wally? Wally, your father and I are here now. Can you hear me honey? (No response) Ward: We love you son. We know you’ll get through this. June: Look at him, Ward. He looks so helpless. Like when he was a little baby. Only it’s different now. When he was a helpless baby, I could make everything better for him. Now, all I can do is stand here while he lies there helpless in such pain. Do you have any idea what’s its like to be a mother and not be able to help your son? Ward: No, but I know what it’s like to be a father and feel that way. (June turns and looks at him and begins crying. Ward reaches out and hugs her tightly, starting to cry himself.) June: Ward, he’s just got to get through this. Ward: I know he will. He’s a strong man, a fighter. (Ward and June then walk out with their arms around each other.) (Scene 6: Hospital. It’s been 4 days since Wally’s accident and there is no change. Mary Ellen stays at the hospital every night and Ward, June, Jan and Beaver come up every morning to be with him. When the scene opens, it’s about 7 am and everyone is just arriving in the waiting room to see Mary Ellen.) Jan: Good Morning, Mary Ellen. How are you? Mary Ellen: Oh, I’m about the same. I’m so tired. June: I know you are sweet heart. (Hugs Mary Ellen) Mary Ellen: I don’t know how much longer I can stand this. There’s been no change and I am beginning to think there may never be one. Beaver: Don’t talk like that Mary Ellen. You’ve got to be strong for Wally. Mary Ellen: (Angry) Why? Why should I be strong for him? He doesn’t even know I’m here! Why did this have to happen? Why? (Everyone just stands there in shock of what has just been said. Mary Ellen then comes back to her senses and begins crying hysterically.) Mary Ellen: Oh, No! I’m so sorry! I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean it, I didn’t! June: (Hugging Mary Ellen) Of course you didn’t honey. You’re just tired and upset. Everything has got you so upset. Mary Ellen: I just want this to all be over! I keep thinking it’s a bad dream and that I’m going to wake up any minute. Ward: Well, listen Mary Ellen, it’s visiting hours. Why don’t you go in and be alone with Wally for a little while? Mary Ellen: Ok. Thanks Ward. I’ll hurry so you can get in to see him. June: Take all the time you need honey. Mary Ellen: (hugging June and Ward) Thanks, both of you. I love you so much. Ward: Go on in dear. (Mary Ellen turns and goes to see Wally) (A few minutes later, a nurse comes running into the waiting room) Nurse: Cleaver family? Ward: Over here. Nurse: Good news! Wallace is awake! He’s awake and he’s very alert. He’s talking to Mary Ellen. The doctor said you can all come in and see him! Ward: Thank you so much nurse! June: (begins crying and runs to Ward and they embrace) Oh Ward! He’s awake! Oh thank God! Ward: (Now crying) Yes dear! I knew he could do it. (Ward and June look up at each other and kiss) Beaver: Well you guys can stand here and be “mushy” all you want, but I’m going to see Wally. (Ward and June stop kissing and start laughing. Then they grab each other’s hands and begin to walk towards the waiting room, but they stop...) June: You know Ward, you and I are two of the luckiest people in the world. Ward: I know dear. I know. The End. |

Very good story. Thank you. I didn't really think Wally was going to die, but you did lengthen the suspense to show that people go through a wide range of emotions at such a time. Good job, and write another!

Thanks guys! You have motivated me to try to write another one soon. One that's a little happier in it's tone.
But really, did you honestly think I would let wally die? NO WAY! But again, thanks for the compliments, I really appreciate them and I'm looking forward to more comments, good or bad!BBF
