Empty Nest's pilot episode was actually the season finale of the Golden Girls in May 1987. But it is with an entirely different cast, but yet the set is the same and the title of the episode is Empty Nest, the only character from that episode to be used in the Empty Nest series is David Lesuire (Charley) whom was known as Oliver in that episode.

Now, was this episode suppose to be the beginning of Empty Nest??? Why did the cast completely change???

The "Empty Nest" episode of The Golden Girls was intended to be the actual Empty Nest series. However, creator Susan Harris feared that the show would become stagnant what with a married couple complaining of being lonely week after week. So she revamped the series, changing everything except the actual set used for the show and David Leisure (the lone survivor from the original pilot, albeit with a different character).

The series would have bombed if they wouldn't have made those changes. I agree that it would have been boring seeing a married couple complain about being lonely week after week. And the guy with multiple personalities was just weird.
