- SCTV – Second City Television
Premiere: Friday, March 18, 12 am - 2 am ET/PT Airing every Friday nights, 12 a.m. - 2 a.m. ET/PT Derived from the famed Second City comedy troupe in Chicago, a branch sprang up in Toronto, and the SCTV series was born. Second City TV was parody program, a show-within-a show. Taking place at the fictional “SCTV Studios,” the “staff” consisted of Guy Caballero (played by Joe Flaherty) as the station owner, Edith Prickly (Andrea Martin) as the manager, and Earl Camembert (Eugene Levy) as the announcer-newscaster. Each program consisted of a group of sketches set at the SCTV Studios. Cast members did take-offs on quiz shows, news, and anything else on the tube. They even performed spoofs of classic TV shows, such as Leave it to Beaver and Welcome Back, Kotter. Other stars of the show include Martin Short, John Candy, Rick Moranis, and Harold Ramis. |

TV LAND MAKES SECOND CITY FIRST PRIORITY AS NETWORK
WELCOMES SCTV TO ITS LINE-UP Santa Monica, CA, March 17, 2005 – Second City Television (SCTV), one of the most creative and inspired comedies ever to air on television, joins the TV Land lineup beginning Friday, March 18 at 12 am ET/PT. The show, which originated from Canada, was a stomping ground for popular comedians such as John Candy, Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin and many more who eventually moved into doing television and film in the US. “SCTV really paved the way for some of the industry’s most popular and talented comedians,” explains Larry W. Jones, President, TV Land and Nick at Nite. “This show was truly a part of television history, so what better way to celebrate this than by adding them to our strong roster of hits!” Airing from 1976 to 1984, SCTV featured comedic performers from the famed Chicago and Toronto Second City comedy venues. It was one of the first television shows which satirized every aspect of the television medium, from the commercials to the executives to the news and what took place at this fictional television station. Writers and performers such as Harold Ramis, Martin Short, John Candy, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Catherine O’Hara, Dave Thomas, Rick Moranis and many more parodied everything in sight, from feature films and commercials to late-night horror movie hosts and the backstage goings-on at the fictional SCTV station itself. Originally created for syndication, SCTV was picked up five years later by NBC and ran for two seasons of 90 minute episodes. It then moved to Cinemax for a last season of 45 minute episodes. |
