Default Committed "The Pilot Episode" Talkback

Figured we needed a talkback thread for tonight.

Quote:
CRAZY IN LOVE -- Brilliant yet neurotic Nate (Josh Cooke, "Century City") is a tightly wound ball of phobias until he accidentally unravels when he meets eccentric yet eternally upbeat Marni (Emmy Award winner (Jennifer Finnigan, NBC's "Crossing Jordan"). As fearful Nate and fearless Marni awkwardly begin their mating dance -- amidst the eclectic craziness of New York -- their relationship's yin and yang somehow match despite a closet-full of obstacles. In fact, free spirit Marni has a "dying clown" (Tom Poston, "Newhart") quietly living in her apartment's closet (she inherited the homesteading clown who came packaged with the apartment). Bowie (Darius McCrary, "Family Matters") -- Nate's friend and co-worker in a vintage record store - offers forceful advice while Marni contends with her sardonic friend Tess, the reluctant and semi-irresponsible nanny across the hall, (Tammy Lynn Michaels, "The L Word") who might be even closer to the edge than she is. Tolerant and optimistic, Marni finds herself drawn to the endearing Nate despite his obsessive compulsions - and he can't resist her loopy orbit in a quirky relationship straight out of Lewis Carroll's lookingglass.

Hmmmmm hey this was really funny. I liked the pilot. I think i will give it a chance.. He is really afraid of elevators but yet he goes on it because he likes her. Very sweet.

I was only able to tune in toward the beginning when Nate said "Gone!" so I hope I didn't miss too much.

It was alright. Some funny bits, a few lame jokes here and there, but perfectly watchable. I see potential in it, especially if they turn down the volume on that damn laugh track. Joey has the same problem - is NBC doing this in an attempt to make their comedies seem funnier?

As for the characters...

Marni had a tendency to be a little too annoying sometimes, but she was kind of endearing. I didn't buy her crying scene, though. Seemed really fake. Nate reminds me of Ross from Friends for some reason. I liked him a bit less than Marni, but he was also likeable and his neuroses should make him fun to watch. Unfortunately, the two don't seem to have much chemistry, which is a real bummer for a romantic comedy. The audience clearly disagrees with me - I couldn't believe they were cheering when they kissed. Are they that invested in these two already?

The other four characters... well, the jury's still out. Hardly any of them had any screen time. I did not like Nate's black friend, whose name escapes me, and no, it wasn't because he was black (hee!) but because his acting was so poor. Marni's neighbor could be really funny - I like the irresponsible nanny bit - and the fact that it's Tammy Lynn Michaels doesn't hurt. The clown was weird, though probably in a good way. Marni's wheelchair-bound friend was probably the funniest of the others.

I will definitely be giving it another chance on Thursday, partially because I need something to watch in between Joey and Will & Grace.

I thought it was funny and has alot of potential. I think it was good enough to be a part of the fall line up. It would've been a better choice than Father of the Pride. The only thing that I found a bit ridiculous is the clown in the closet, but I am willing to see where this goes. I'll check it out again.

See, the clown thing I didn't mind so much, because I read how that was taken from one of the writers' lives. If it's at least based on a true story, I can handle something that out-there.

It was good to see Darius McCrary back on television.

That said, I doubt Committed is going to last. The premiere was quirky and amusing, but in my experience it is incredibly hard to keep the quirkiness factor going in a television sitcom (Scrubs has done a good job thus far). I find it hard to believe that the characters can continue at the same level of oddness for even a few months. At least, not before it gets stale.

I did laugh several times during the premiere. There were one or two hearty laughs in there.

It was better than I thought it would be....it was also better than alotta crap lately, this and Joey were the only 2 sitcoms this year that was worth watching. I think I'm gonna keep watching this one..

My favorite part was with Marni's friend, Todd and that whole resteraunt scene. and how he was giving Nate that evil look as he was going past the window, that was hilarious!

I have 2 complaints though, number one....the show should have had a theme song! number two....I don't like Tom Poston. I find him to be very annoying in everything that hes in. they should have found someone else to be the Clown.

Committed got a 7.1/10 for 3rd place in its timeslot behind the Orange Bowl and Amazing Race (Amazing Race was #3 in the 9pm half hour). I don't see Committed lasting because Scrubs at 9pm is not a good lead-in when it returns. According to Jim/Rodney will outplay them.

To add to what pavanbadal said, additional ratings information, from the NBC media website:

Quote:
From 9:29-10 p.m. ET, the premiere of the new comedy "Committed" (4.5/10 in 18-49, 10.2 million viewers overall) delivered NBC's highest 18-49 rating in the time period this season (excluding Election Night). "Committed" posted a 29 percent improvement versus NBC's non-news season average for the slot (4.5 vs. 3.5 in 18-49) and a 22 percent gain versus NBC's results for the same night and time period last year (4.5 vs. 3.7).
Looks like a solid start. Will the episode airing tomorrow do as well - or better? Time shall tell.
