Default Just in case some of you are wondering why Officer Hoppy appears by himself in season

5, it was because the black guy who played Officer Smitty starred in a New Prison Comedy called "On the Rocks" that premeired in the fall of 1975 which lasted until May of 1976. And Hal Williams then returns to the Show in season 6.

I never saw on the rocks because it was a short-ived sitcom. It lasted a year and I on;y know about it because i do a lot of reading about TV shows from the 70's. Some people criticized the show because it sent out the message that prison was a fun place to be-lol

BTW: why in the hell was a character created for Hoppy's mother?-lol Never made any sense

Sounds like an interesting show.

I have no idea why Hoppys mother was a character on S&S. I will say this though, I honestly thought it was a man playing hoppys mother, she was ugly

Poor Nancy Kulp...even though as you all know, I am not very fond of Hoppy; the actor that played Howard Platt was not a bad looking guy...

I agree. I also feel that if Hal williams left the show, they should have just gotten rid of the Hoppy character. Especially since they were a team

I don't know why they kept hoppy. I guess the producers thought he was funny or something

To me, hoppy was only funny when he was with Smitty, when Smitty left Hoppy was boring.

I think when Smitty returned in season 6, he was coming to the Sanford home by himself. I don't remember them being together in season 6.

I've only seen a few season 6 episodes and I don't recall seeing Smitty and Hoppy together.

Did they ever make an appearance on the spinoff The Sanford Arms?

Nope, besides Aunter Monster, the other characters from Sanford and Son that appeared on Sanford Arms was Grady and Bubba.

They appeared together in two episodes of Sanford; one episode was called Cal the Coward and The Ring
