Do any of you like it? I've seen all of the episodes, and I cansay that it's not such a great show..unless you think Gloria talking to a turtle is funny.

I use to watch Gloria when there were reruns on WWOR New York. I didn't think that there was anything special about the show. However I do think that CBS should have renewed it for a second season because the ratings were good for the first season.

I've never seen Gloria. I wished some channel would pick up Archie Bunker's Place and Gloria.

I have the first pilot episode from the ABP series in which Archie appears. The episode itself isnt really too funny nor is any of the 13 episodes produced.
I love "AITF" and "ABP" with a passion but the "Gloria" series fell short for me. I never cared much for "Maude" either but i loved the "Jeffersons" and "Good Times" as spinoffs. ------------------ cp |

What's really funny is that the "Gloria" pilot, where Archie takes Gloria and Joey to upstate New York, was never aired on CBS (they did air the two-part episode where Gloria returns to New York with Joey). CBS didn't like it, and shot a different first episode, without Carroll O'Connor. The pilot episode eventually turned up in the "Archie Bunker's Place" syndication package. Weird.

It makes it a truly "rare" episode. WPSG Philadelphia aired it last year.
I liked the "Gloria Comes Home" episode better though. The WPSG episode is edited unlike the CBS airing which of course is complete. |

The show was tooo watered down and I could not stand the character Clark. I would have fired him, kept Dr. Adams and possibly Maggie. Gloria seemed like she was tooo dependent.
I'll be honest, During these last years of All in the Family era, things got weak. I had no issue with the producers changing the name of the show, but so much off screen stuff happening: Edith's Stroke, Mike's leaving Gloria for the homecoming queen, and where did Veronica and Mrs. Canby disappear to? No proper series finale for this show that aired for 13 years. It's a shame. As far as Gloria goes, I think the writing could have been much better. I loved the animals, they were cute but it wasn't working. I would have kept the show and made some changes. [This message has been edited by ThomasE (edited 10-12-2001).] |

I remember that "Archie Bunker's Place" never had a FAREWELL episode, after all the years of Carroll O'Connor being brave enough to play the role of ARCHIE BUNKER(he felt frustrated himself about it), and, most of all, it's origin being "All In The Family", but, they just unexpectedly decided during the summer to ax it, for the coming fall schedule. This is one of the reasons they made a mistake by letting the show continue beyond Mike and Gloria's departure

I agree that Gloria became too dependent in her own series. She became a little ditzy as well, and seemed like a different character.
As far as Carroll being upset that he didn't get a farewell episode -- he should have realized that he did. It was called "The Stivics Go West". It was Carroll who wanted to continue the show after that, despite half the cast leaving and Norman Lear wanting to stop (and Jean Stapleton later quitting). I don't know what they could have done for an ABP finale, with Edith dead, and Mike and Gloria divorced. The show had gone on way too long at that point, and CBS obviously realized it. |

Here is my opinion:
I haven't seen an episode of ABP, so this is just what came up in my imagination. It should've been Archie at Edith's grave and Archie recalling different moments from "All in the Family" and "ABP". ------------------ Hottest Men alive: Dale Midkiff Anthony Starke Tim McGraw Jonathan Crombie Lumpy: Did you go out for anything, Dud? Dudley: Well, I went out for football, but I got my finger stepped on, so my mother made me quit. Eddie: Well listen-- I went out for basketball and I got my hair pulled, and my mother made ME quit.
