Question When good shows produce weak spinoffs

AfterMASH, The Golden Palace, Three's A Crowd, The Sanford Arms and Chico And The Man (post-Freddie Prinze) - what do these shows have in common?

Answer: They tried to continue on without key characters and the lead actors who played them, ultimately ending up on the TV scrap heap...you can't even find these shows in syndication.

Sometimes, it's best to leave well enough alone...

The same goes for "Mayberry RFD", "Little House: A New Beginning" and "Make Room for Granddaddy".

Mayberry RFD had a three-year run!! So it was a little bit of a modest success!!

It just wasn't the same without Andy, Barney and Opie.

And I believe it was cancelled not because of low ratings, but rather in CBS' purge of all "rural" shows in the early '70s. They were seeking a more contemporary, "sophisticated" urban audience and several shows, like this and The Beverly Hillbillies were cut for this foolish reason

Exactly and it was ranked in the top 20 when it was cancelled. I happened to enjoy the show.

When I read that, I could believe how moronic that was from a business standpoint. Kill off a show with a good rating that's profitable just because you want to look hip. I could understand phasing out those type of shows gradually as their ratings dropped or the shows elected to stop production, but to stop something in its tracks like that is just...weird!
