Anybody remember Can't Hurry Love, The Division star Nancy McKeon's 1995 one year wonder show?

I remember it. It was a carbon copy of Friends. It was during the time when all the networks were trying to create their own Friends hit sitcom.

It wasn't a carbon copy of "Friends". It focused mainly on Nancy's character looking for love, and not finding it. Mariska Hargitay (daughter of Jayne Mansfield and Mickey Hargitay) played her hot best friend who had no trouble getting guys. Kind of like Mary and Rhoda, if Rhoda was the main character, and Mary was a kinda slutty.

Actually, you're both right. Although they weren't actually carbon copies of "Friends," the following shows were ALL labeled as "Friends" clones by critics when they debuted the following season after Friends first launched - CBS' "Can't Hurry Love," Fox's "Ned & Stacey" (my personal fav) & "Partners," NBC's "Caroline In The City," and ABC's "The Drew Carey Show." None of these shows would have happened if not for "Friends." In regards to the Mary and Rhoda comparison, McKeon's Annie character was the straight arrow while Hargitay's Didi character was the somewhat promiscuous one, the party girl. I remember an episode where each had the obligatory "I wish I could be more like you dialogue."
I was one of the few who liked Can't Hurry Love and watched it routinely. I remember McKeon looking quite fetching with her Jennifer Aniston cut which was still 'in' with women at the time. She convincingly shed her tough tomboy "Facts of Life" image for me as well in the show, while Hargitay did, indeed, provide adequate eye candy. Today when I watch her in "Law & Order SVU," I always think back to her 'livelier' days on 'Love' and her stint as Dr. Green's love interest on "ER" in contrast to her butch tough cop character on 'SVU' which was preceded by her somewhere-in-between role in NBC's 1997 cool short-lived police drama "Prince Street." In the 1995 fall preview issue of TV Guide, Guide predicted "Can't Hurry Love" would inevitably fail because in addition to their thinking the show was poorly trying to be another "Friends," they also theorized that shows named after song titles are doomed from the start and rarely succeed. |
