I was watching the episode "The Young Fans" today and it looks like Lucille Ball's eye is puffy underneath, like she might of had a bruised eye and they covered it up with make up...take a look for yourself and let me know what you think?...it's the eye to our right and her left. ;)

I'm glad someone else noticed...I thought it was just me...let us know what you think Splain. I watched the episode three times in a row and zoomed in and it looked like a bruised eye to me. Also, if watch closely when she is talking to Peggy it's almost as if she is trying to keep it open, but hey thats my opinion, I guess we'll never really know for sure...darn it! ;)

Crazy, given how many of the old stories say she used to knock the living daylights of him during their, er... little tiffs... maybe it would have been only fair if he hit back once or twice.

But even if it is a black eye, and I can't say I've seen anything, with zooming and all (anyone got a hi-res TV?), there's lots of ways to get them. I've had several, and none of them were the result of punches. :)

Yeah well I guess he took it out other ways too..., the only time I have heard that Lucy had hit him was the whole hammer incident which I dont believe for a second! The whole story sounds way over exaggerated! Then, I always heard that she liked to hurt a man...from the book Desilu, but it sounds to me like she wasn't being for real by hitting him, more like flirting or something. But whats worse physical abuse or mental abuse? Be aware that in many ways Desi mentally abused her. Maybe not always on purpose, but he knew her insecurities, yet he still took advantage of them. For example, she was worried about the whole age difference in their marriage and she always worried about getting older and like someone said before when she started losing to the age game he cheated more and more. I'm sure that was painful for her. Even Tom Watson said that he thought that Desi abused Lucy, not necessarily physical, but mentally. I think mental abuse is much worse because bruises heal, but mental abuse can last a LIFETIME. I asked my friend and she said the same thing. But, I guess thats my opinion....

Exactly! What Bekah and Mickey say is always a little one sided, although Bekah is usually fair. Same as those poeple who want to sell books by printing made up stories or at least exaggerated ones. But if i had been HER, i would have done worse to him to retaliate for all the years of boozing, gambling and especially fooling around. If he constantly hurt HER with HIS affairs with prostitutes and every woman he came across, she should hurt him back to show how she feels. They were both unhappy and needed help and there was no Dr Phil back then, they tried therapy nonetheless and he left after a few sessions. I think you don't hear about him hitting her because a man hitting a woman, well, it would have been bad for him and his career, and i agree with Bekah that he probably never did, but i also agree that the mental abuse was worse. AND, if she did get hardder later on, it was to protect herself from ever being hurt like that again. This was the love of her life that did these things to her, so she coated her heart to never get hurt like that again. Neither was perfect, that's for sure, as none of us here are either.

x1LucyFanx
02-23-2004, 10:27 PM
Thank you Splain! I feel the exact same way. I am surprised that she didn't hurt him more because I know people who have chased their husbands with knives for kissing another person, or dancing with another and come on now he slept with atleast 5 dozen other women. That is exactly why she was they way she was when she was older.

SPLAIN

Well, i think anybody who HAS BEEN HURT would feel the same way, once you've been there, you can understand things better and this was decades ago, not like today. There were no self help books back then, and if the gossip columnists found out you were seeking medical help, that meant trouble too, so they had to LIVE with their problems, festering constantly!

And when i discuss both of them, i am fair also, i am only one sided when i read one sided statements. I learned to be fairer from Ricardos forever, she does it beautifully. REAL Lucille Ball fans usually HATE Desi for what he put her through, but if they analyze everything, it was a fair fight, they both loved and fought furiously.

No, but neither did he! It was already being used on a quiz show, what he did was adapt it to the sitcom and by filming instead of using Kinescope, the reruns then became extremely valuable, had he held on to them instead of selling them to CBS so he could buy a run down studio, he would have died rich instead of with heavy mortgages on everything he owned, Lucy on the other hand deprived herself her whole life so her kids could get millions when she died. You know if you and I keep going with this, i say 100 posts, easy! LOL!

That's the thing Karen, we have no way of knowing what HE did and what OTHERS did, it was so long ago, do you realize nobody even remembered how the name of the show came about? Then they recalled that his vanity stopped them from giving her top billing, so they made it I LOVE LUCY meaning he got top billing. What i will readily admit though Karen is that he was a great boss who let his people do their work without interfeering, and paid them well, and gave bonuses and initiated those company picnics, because happy employees become GREAT employees. He also got that studio into shape and helped create some other early tv blockbusters, until the liquor bottle got the best of him and it all stopped, and Lucy had to struggle to save their investment. I think HER being poor as a child helped her become a workaholic and his being rich as a kid made him too free with money, look how they ended up!

Darlin, she was a movie star CBS wanted to add to their schedule, he was the one they didn't want and she had to threaten to get him the job. But she spent her life defending BOTH husbands, and at least this one proved he did have the capacity to at least show her at her best, and be an entertainer in his own right!

Kazza
02-24-2004, 03:35 PM
Darlin; I see your point. Lucy defended Desi to be on the show or else. They obliged; Both were in the show and deserved to be top billed because of their talents in different aspects of the bussiness

SPLAIN

But it doesn't work that way in show biz, people tuned in to see Lucille Ball movie star, afterwards i agree, but at the beginning people didn't even KNOW him. If Bette Midler, when she had her short lived series had been billed after HER husband whom nobody knew, you know I Love Bette, it wouldn't have made much sense. So they called it Bette instead. Hey, i know how to liven this thing up, how about when Lucy did The Lucy show, can you see Gary as her boyfriend, and then her husband on the show?

But in Hollywood they do it by who's the biggest star, if Julia Roberts put her new unknown hubby in a film with her,he wouldn't get top billing over her. What someone BEHIND the scenes does is what Desi did, he secured himself the executive producer credit later on. Which Lucy also did later on in her own series without Desi.

Mkaleek
02-28-2004, 03:34 AM
Sorry to go all the way back, but if Desi "adapted" the idea for three camera filming on a television series, in essence he still created it. That's like saying the person who invented the movie screen is the same person that invented the television. The person that invented the television "borrowed" from the values of the projection of a movie screen, and POOF, that person created the television. This ties to Desi's case for the simple fact that he "borrowed" the values of filming a game show to film a sitcom television series. So:drool:, in coclusion, Desi Arnaz IS the inventor of the three -camera method for sitcom television.

SPLAIN

No, it's not that i don't want to give him the credit he is due, i just want to make sure he deserves that credit, because he was given a lot of credit for things that he had little or nothing to do with, that Jess oppenheimer and others should have been credited with. Lucy defending him and building him up all those years was to offset his being considered Mr Ball, so they added to his accomplishments and his daughter still does that today. But, producing I Love Lucy and and getting as many as 19 shows on the air at ONE time IS a major accomplishment, why Desi does not get the same credit as a Norman Lear or Aaron Spelling, i don't know. There are constant contradictions, he ran a studio for five years, yes, but he also ran it into the ground at the end of those five years. He secured ownership of I Love Lucy from CBS, yes, but sold it back to them for 4 million to buy a run down studio, instead of holding on to it as Jess did his share, he would have died rich instead of in debt. BUT, he was a handsome charmer, a great father, great singer/performer and all around entertainer. He produced, directed and ran things behind the scenes, but unfortunately, like Lucy said and HE admitted, everything he BUILT up he had to eventually TEAR down.

I think this country has some serious racial issues. If Desi was a "white american", and ran the company into the ground, he would've received an enormous amount of credit for running one of the largest studios in history. Maybe it's just my opinion, but I think that the extremely minute fact that he was cuban took a lot from his hard work. It's a shame.

That is kind of questionable, because I remember reading in one book that Lucy had a black eye one time (I think in the late 50s) and one publication got a hold of the information and implied that Desi may have been responsible for it, especially since rumors had been flying that the Arnazes were having marriage troubles. However, soon after a retraction was printed, saying the source that gave that information about the black eye obviously had no idea what he was talking about. Strange, isn't it? But other than that, I have never heard anything about Desi hitting Lucy.

Yes, but keep in mind that Lucy also knew Desi's insecurities and probably used them to her advantage also. For instance, Desi wanted some dramatic role (I can't remember specifics) and Lucy made a point of telling him to forget it, and that the only thing America will ever view him as is a sp**. Granted, Lucy was blunt and always spoke her mind, but her words certainly weren't meant as an ego boost. He was already struggling with the fact that he wasn't the star of ILL, etc. Of course, we cannot forget that Lucy did a lot for Desi and built him up many times in the eyes of the public....but Desi did the same with Lucy. So on both parts, there were lots of accolades but then there was some "mental abuse" too. I think Lucie Arnaz said it best when she pointed out that they knew each other better than anyone in the world, and therefore they BOTH knew how to (and sometimes did) hurt each other deeper than anyone could imagine. It went both ways.
