Ewan's My Man 02-16-2004, 07:28 PM Ok, so I wanna make a new AOL sn...the problem is in order to do that I haveta get rid of my current sn. Is there any way to like, send my buddy list and like the stuff in my filing cabinet over to my new sn, or is all hope lost?
Ewan's My Man 02-16-2004, 07:31 PM Oh, and also, I can sign on my AOL sn from AIM, if I delete my AOL sn, can I still sign on it from AIM, or is it gone forever?
As a former AOL employee (shudder), I can tell you that when you delete a screen name, it's pretty much gone forever; you won't even be able to use it on AIM anymore.
emptynest5 02-16-2004, 07:35 PM You must create the new screename first and then you can send everything to it. You should be able to create more than one sn. hope that helps!

Yea, but the problem is that I can't make any more sns b/c the rest of my family has sns on the same acct.
Ahhh...ok...I have a lotta work to do in order to make a new sn...ah...wish me luck
Kristina 02-16-2004, 08:07 PM Luck.
Exactly. If there are already seven screen names on an account, she's S.O.L. unless she has the means to create a new account.

If u want to keep your buddys on ur list you should write everything down on a pieace of paper or type it all out and print it out that is what i did when i lost my buddys a few weeks ago.
i dont think you can save them to ur filing cabinet not sure about that one!!!!!

Your screename will no be deleted forever it goes in a restore thing, and you can always get it back like ( Restore ) and it will go back to your account. Trust me i know alot about AOL.. you can have upto 7 screenames per account.. if u all have any questions about aol ill be gladley to help out...

that's not completely true. When you delete a name it stays for a few months and you can bring it back but you can still use it on AIM
EricIdlefan 02-17-2004, 01:36 PM I am thinking about switching from MSN/Hotmail to another internet server like AOL because I belong to a dozen message boards and some of the boards that I have been on won't take MSN/Hotmail because the boards say they can't accept free service and/or due to the SPAM epidemic!!

That used to be the case, but they changed it about a year and a half ago.

Mandie,
I can tell you with a great deal of confidence that when an AOL screen name is deleted, it's gone for good and cannot be used on AIM. This has been the case since 2002.
Are you sure you deleted the screen name, or did you spin it off into its own account?
AOL has a process called "spin off sub account" ("SOSA," for short) that allows a member to spin a secondary screen name off into its own account. The secondary screen name from your older account would be the master on your new account.
Trust me on this: AOL is very deceptive as far as making people think they've deleted a screen name, when in actuality, they've created a second account. I've dealt with many irate members who have been double billed for a handful of months before they caught it.
Do yourself a favor: call AOL (888-265-8008) and make sure you're not getting billed for two accounts. If it turns out the screen name hasn't been "spun off," ask them why you're still able to use it on AIM.
Let me know how it goes.
By the way, here (http://www.cutterlaw.com/aol.html) is a link to information on a class action that has been filed against America Online regarding the SOSA process. While some of the allegations in the linke aren't true, the fact that AOL is losing lots of long-time members because of this problem is.
MandieR1980 02-17-2004, 06:38 PM nope it's not that when I go to screen names and clicked on "restore" my old name was there I deleted it a long time ago. I didn't restore it but I can still use that name on AIM I just did a few minutes ago.
