View Full Version : OVERRATED NANCY

I am on the board for the first time in months, and it amazes me how crazy people are for Nancy. Get a life folks, she does not act like Sandra Bullock(let alone Meryl Streep). Nor is she the most successful FOL alumni, let alone the most talented, or in particular, the most beautiful. SHERRIE' AUSTIN wins those two titles hands down. And her cop show is like watching grass grow. Anyone who wants to see a strong woman(and from a guy's point of view, great legs) check out Catherine Bell on JAG. And one more thing, Jo fans, the one with the real heart is BLAIR, who kept Jo in school in episode 58, and who saved Eastland(207-208)

Trying not to overreact but that was not very nice.. some people haven't even seen seasons 9 yet, so how will they know about Sherrie? And there has been posts on Blair..It's because Jo is most of our favorite character so there are more posts on her and even if you don't like her you could have found a better way to say it such as "In my opinion..", "I hope I am not offending anyone.." or something like that, and I happen to like The Division, and it's not like watching grass grow!!!! http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/mad.gif

That was hilarious! Kudos to you! No one has ever had the guts to say that so harshly at this board.
Even though I may agree with you that Nancy McKeon is overrated ( only at this message board), I highly disagree that Sherrie Austin is the most biggest 'star' out of the 'facts'.
Hello! Kim Fields. Does that name ring a bell?
Besides whatever I think about the wasted hoopla over Nancy at this board, she still made a hell of a character out of Jo.

O-o-okay... I bet you feel better after getting that off your chest. <grin>

Before anyone pounces on NYGEORGE for voicing a dissenting opinion -- let's remember the purpose of message boards. Sharing ideas and thoughtful communication.

NYGEORGE -- I can agree with parts of your post. I would exchange "overrated" for "overexposed"... at least on this board. The Nancy talk has really reached a fever pitch here lately. But, that's to be expected since we're here for the Facts. <grin>

That means we'll all have our favorites. Pippa, Blair, Jo -- whatever! I'm tickled that you've got a place to cheer Sherrie's exploits.

Don't dig the Division? Prefer Blair to Jo? That's cool.To each his own.

As I recall, Sandra Bullock had a sitcom (Working Girl) in 1990 and it didn't last past season one. Just goes to show you that you never can tell who's gonna make it on the big screen. *Maybe* someday it'll be McKeon or your fave Sherrie.

Who knows?! <grin>

I'm sorry you don't think Nancy is a great actress, but lots of people (mostly everyone) likes her, including me. She's my favorite actress and like someone here said, who cares about her legs! It doesn't even matter what anyone looks like! Nancy is a great person and a great actress! She was great in her role in the Facts of Life and is great in the Division. If she wasn't in the Division that show would be boring. She was also great in the movies she was in! You know, most people can't cry when you tell them to. She was nicknamed Faucet Face from the FOL cast because she could cry on command. Can most actresses do that? I don't think so! So would you please keep your opinion to yourself?

Anyone recall the quote Blair had in "The Four Musketeers" when she was explaining to Mrs. G that she and her new friends just sat around "... agreeing with one another for hours"?

It seems to me that different points of view make things interesting. I would just hope that we can truly *discuss* stuff that we disagree on and refrain from slamming anyone in the process.

I won't say that Nancy McKeon is overrated, for she is a fine actress.

However, the unabashed, unadulterated Hero worship of her which takes place here is quite annoying at times. I mean, the show was called The Facts of Life, and had about 6 cast members at any given time... it wasn't the Jo Show.

and much like NYGEORGESTRAIT, I also like Sherrie Austin and Lisa Whelchel better m'self...

Maybe it comes with being a poli sci major or from dealing with people who I don't always agree with, or just wanting others to know what I think, but there is nothing wrong with arguing viewpoints. Use LOGIC. Devon King was right on the money.

Look I liked Jo too but she was not the whole show. I think it is great that she had impact, but the show would not have been all about Jo. It was a collective effort on everyone else's part.

Peoole are going overboard on this post, I did not say she is a bad actress, or even a fair one, just overrated. FOL was a sitcom, not Bush vs Gore, because I feel that she she was part of a cast, not the whole show, I'm getting killed here. I used to be a big Molly Ringwald fan "Pretty In Pink", "Pick-up Artist",ect, but I acknowledge Nancy improved the show when she replaced Molly and the first season girls. But, was she any more important than Charlotte Rae? Two seasons of Cloris Leachman(yuk)is the answer to that. What made the show work, was the interplay between the cast(particularly between Blair and Jo in seasons 2-6). As for Sherrie', Pippa is not as good a character as Jo(never said she was), but her singing beats even Shania or Leanne Rimes. Finally, The Jo heroine worship is too much, she is a fictional character, not a real person, its not like she is singing like Sherrie', let alone Elvis? Wake up board.

Glad I can post again under my own handle(its true I'm from Long Island, like Nancy Mckeon). People have to get a life, the world is not ending because I was a little critical of her. If she was a truly great actress and(or), extremly popular, she would be getting $20 million per picture like Julia Roberts(and I prefer Nancy to Julia), but facts are facts. Its true I prefer Blair to Jo as a Character but is there anything wrong with that? I'm entitled to my opinion, like I prefer Sherrie' Austin to Brittney Spears. The person who mentioned Kim Fields has a fair point, Kim was successful, but I was just refering to right now, thats why I avoided talking talking about the most Successful FOL alumni MOLLY RINGWALD. Its time the McKeon crew grew up, and faced reality she is a pretty good actress, not Elvis.

Once again Cokies, I must agree with you, it is quite comical that someone would post this on such a defensible board! I mean the gall! I like it! I agree, she is a bit overated, but if you're a huge fan, that's ok to do. I really didn't like any of her characters after Jo, she did a good job iwth Jinny, but I literally cannot sit through the show! Anywho....I think you peeps should be open to other opinions without jumping all over each other, people ARE entitled to their opinions, even though you may not agree with them.

She's a very good actress. Much better than many of the biggest money-makers in Hollywood. No, she hasn't been the most succesful, however since when does monetary success = talent?

For example, Henry Winkler (best known as "The Fonz") didn't really blossom into a huge Hollywood Star after Happy Days was cancelled. Is that to say that he's a bad actor? For crying out loud, the guy has a Master's Degree in theatre!

Just as Winkler was too recognizeable as Fonzie, Nancy was too recognizeable as Jo to get numerous good roles as well. That is NOT to say that she was a bad actress!

That's my opinion.

Many sitcom stars really don't become any famous-ier because of typecasting. Very few make it bigger or maintain how famous they were. The only exception I really see is Suzanne Somers and Mary Tyler Moore.

I don't want to sound rude but FOL became a great show mainly because of Nancy McKeon's character plus I admire her for the kind of person she is, so that kind of hurt. Also I don't look at her for her legs! You're entitled to your opinion but I really don't think you're giving Nancy enough credit. I still think she's the best!

A few more words. I really haven't heard that much about Sherrie Austin and she wasn't that big a character on FOL. If she's your fave, that's cool but Jo was still one of the best. Also, If you don't like watching the Division, don't watch it but I wish you wouldn't insult it so harshly, alot of people on this board enjoy watching it.

True indeed. The more successful you are in a TV series, the less you'll be successful in any other series or film. There are exceptions to the rule, such as Michael J.Fox, John Travolta, Mary Tyler Moore, etc...but still it's very unfortunately true.
