View Full Version : Anybody Ever Gotten A Grant Before To Go To School?
isiahthomas 02-03-2004, 12:28 PM I'm trying to go to broadcasting school & i wanna know how can i get a grant cause i don't wanna sign up for financial aid cause i don't feel like paying the school back their money once my classes are over. Ain't no guarantee that i'm gonna get a radio dj job once classes are over & i ain't letting no school get rich off of me. I feel like education should be free. U shouldn't have to pay money to go to school. Everybody can't afford to go to school especially if u don't get a scholarship or a grant.
JoJoJoJoJoJoJoJoJo 02-03-2004, 03:44 PM if it weren't for grants I wouldnt' be in school... you have to have a pretty low income , i'm not sure of the cutt off, and they also very from state to state, plus, I think a lot of it has to do w/ whether you go to a public or private school. you need to go talk to a finacnial aid advisor, they will help you.
SBTB Geek 02-03-2004, 03:47 PM I'm going to USC on several grants and scholarships that I don't have to pay back. For more information on scholarships, and other forms of financial aid go to, www.fastweb.com
EricIdlefan 02-03-2004, 04:06 PM I would love to go back to school and major in journalism and broadcasting and be more of a behind the scenes person and let the others take to credit, praises, & glory and make them look good!!
isiahthomas 02-03-2004, 04:52 PM My father is so negative towards anything i wanna do. When i told him i wanted to go to broadcasting school to be a radio dj, he started telling me all this negative stuff about the broadcasting industry is cutthroat & people have big egos in that field. He told me i'm not politically shrewd enough to handle that for a career. I don't care what he says. I'm going to broadcasting school once i find out how i can get a grant cause i don't wanna get financial aid. If i got financial aid, it would take me forever to pay that money back. Plus i read somewhere that radio dj's don't make that much money starting out which isn't a good thing to hear. If people always listened to their parents & other people about the type of careers they should have, people would never follow their dreams. I'm sure people laughed at Muggsy Bouges, Spud Webb, Earl Boykins when they said they wanted to play in the NBA but they didn't listen & look at what they accomplished. Spud Webb was the first short NBA player to win a slam dunk contest at all star weekend in Dallas in 86.

My parents told me a bunch of negative stuff too when I told them I wanted a career in art. They told me I would never make any money and those kinds of jobs were hard to find and being a woman would make it even harder for me blah blah blah.............
I don't make a lot of money right now but it is enough to support myself without having to depend on other people and I really do enjoy it and am glad I'm doing what I want instead of becoming a secretary like my mother wanted. You go and pursue the career you want and don't listen to anyone else. You might end up regretting it later if you don't do what you like.
Anyway I never qualified for any grants even though my mom was in the low income bracket. I paid for everything myself which is why it took me 7 years to get through college.
isiahthomas 02-03-2004, 08:05 PM Well i'm definitely in the low income bracket so i should qualify for a grant.
SBTB Geek 02-03-2004, 11:25 PM Don't you have to major in communications or broadcast journalism to be a radio DJ?... My major is broadcast journalism.
isiahthomas 02-04-2004, 11:51 AM I don't know SBTB Geek.

No you don't...nowadays they have specialized schools just for broadcasting. Program directors and producers like myself, look more for a knockout demo tape. Sure, degrees will get you in the door alot quicker, but all the degress in the world can't beat a great demo tape.
Czas na Zywiec 02-04-2004, 12:19 PM If it wasn't for the 10K I'm recieving in grants and scholarships, I wouldn't even be here.
isiahthomas 02-04-2004, 02:25 PM Original Prankster what are u talkin about? How do u make a demo tape Brian?

You book time in a studio and do a mock radio show. It should be like 2 minutes long. Do intro and outros to songs. They want to hear your voice and how you present things. Depending on what radio station you want to work for and send a demo tape to, listen to that station and listen to how their Dj's do a show and just try to copy that format.

CU, but it works both ways. CU Boulder is what most people call it (Since we have three CU campuses in CO).

Ah, yes. :)
EricIdlefan 02-05-2004, 02:38 PM Prankster, Congraulations for being the first in your generation and hope and pray for many, many, more generations to follow you!!
isiahthomas 02-06-2004, 11:36 AM Brian does the broadcasting school allow u to use their studio to make a demo tape?
Brian Damage 02-06-2004, 11:41 AM Yes and you can use it for the rest of your life if you want. Once you attend school, you have a lifetime membership to use their facilities.
isiahthomas 02-07-2004, 02:10 PM Brian do radio dj's make good money? I read somewhere that starting out radio dj's only make like $5 or $6 something a hour starting. That's terrible. Do u know if they get paid weekly, biweekly or do they have a contract?
Brian Damage 02-07-2004, 02:23 PM It all depends. The bigger the market, the more money you'll make. New york is the biggest market, but it's also the hardest to make it here. It also depends how big a radio station you work at. The smaller ones will pay you by the hour on a bi weekly schedule. The bigger ones depending on what shift you get, will most likely sign you to a contract. You'll also have to join AFTRA, which is a union for on air personalities. The initiation fee isn't cheap either.
isiahthomas 02-07-2004, 02:32 PM I'm guessing that the union takes money out of your check every week once u become a radio dj right? I read somewhere that depending on where u live especially if u live in a big city, big city radio stations do pay u more money than small city radio stations. Cleveland really isn't a small city so i would hope that they pay well.
Brian Damage 02-07-2004, 02:35 PM Yes, the dues would come straight out of your check. Cleveland would pay a heck of alot better than say Akron. I used to work with a couple of Cleveland morning shows. Dick and Rick and later, Wolf and Mulroney.
isiahthomas 02-09-2004, 11:09 AM Would the union dues come out of your check every week or every month? Only radio station i wanna work for in Cleveland is 93 FM WZAK which is a black radio station. Cleveland only has 2 black radio stations LOL. We used to have 3 black radio stations but one of them which was WDMT FM 108 in the early 80's was taken away. It's a shame Cleveland only has 2 black radio stations as black populated as Cleveland is & the black radio stations we do have are lame. I guarantee u can go to any other black populated city like New York, Atlanta, LA, Chicago, Detroit, Philly, Washington DC & their black radio stations are better than Cleveland's. I know for a fact that Washington DC & Baltimore's black radio stations are better than Cleveland's cause they have more variety & they got at least 3-4 black radio stations.
isiahthomas 02-09-2004, 11:13 AM I used to live in Virginia & Maryland, that's how i know Washington DC's black radio stations are better than Cleveland's. Sherry Carter used to work for 93 FM WZAK in the early 80's cause she's from Cleveland but now she lives in Maryland. She used to host BET's Video Soul with Donnie Simpson in the early 90's. I don't know what she's doing now. Lynn Tolliver who used to work for 93 FM WZAK in the early 80's now works for another radio station in Cleveland but it's a rock & roll station & i know he's not happy about that. It's hard for a black dj to go to a rock & roll station when all u know is black music. Dave Tolliver who used to be in the 90's r&b group Men At Large is a radio dj for 93 FM WZAK now & he's Lynn Tolliver's brother.
isiahthomas 02-17-2004, 01:13 PM Here u go Brian.
Brian Damage 02-17-2004, 01:15 PM The dues would come out every month.
isiahthomas 02-17-2004, 01:21 PM I'm definitely gonna try my hand at broadcasting school but the only thing i would be discouraged about is not getting a job in radio once my classes are over. I would already be pissed that i gotta pay financial aid back which will take forever & then not getting a radio dj job would really piss me off cause i would feel like i wasted money for nothin. I seriously hope i could get a job as a radio dj in Cleveland but it would have to pay me at least $10 a hour starting out cause i ain't trying to start out at $5 something a hour. I could make that working at a factory or a fast food joint LOL. My check would still be small though if i was getting paid $10 a hour at a radio station cause i would probably only work like 2-3 hours cause that's all most radio dj's get. How many hours a day u think radio dj's work Brian?
EricIdlefan 02-17-2004, 01:26 PM Good luck Brian, I think you would make one helluva DJ!!
isiahthomas 02-17-2004, 01:30 PM Brian already has a job in broadcasting doing something in television i believe Eric.
EricIdlefan 02-17-2004, 01:44 PM Brian if you keep this up, you probably will be the next Dan, Peter, & Tom and/or better yet, Uncle Walter!!
isiahthomas 02-17-2004, 01:46 PM Eric what are u talkin about? LOL.
Brian Damage 02-17-2004, 01:46 PM I'm a radio producer and I am a part of the Writer's Guild of America.
EricIdlefan 02-17-2004, 01:48 PM Oh, I thought you were a broadcaster but are a behind the scenes person!! Sorry!!

Every job is different. You might work a part time schedule or a full time schedule. If you are just starting out, you'll probably start off weekends and holidays.

No problem. ;)
isiahthomas 02-17-2004, 01:52 PM Radio dj's work on holidays? Oh no. I would hope that i would get a full time schedule. I can't live off of a part time schedule.
