View Full Version : What Other TV Show DVDs do You Have?
Larry Surrell 01-24-2004, 10:10 AM This topic has probably been done before too (sorry old timers). I'm curious, besides TDVDS Seasons 1 & 2 (and soon to be 3) what other tv shows do you have on DVD? Here's my list:
Mary Tyler Moore Season 1 (anxiously awaiting for season 2 to be released)
The Honeymooners (Classic 39 and all the Lost Episodes)
I Love Lucy Season 1 (Not really a fan of ILL until their trip to Hollywood, but I'll get the entire series just to have it)
All in the Family Seasons 1 & 2
The Monkees Seasons 1 & 2
Lost in Space Season 1 (Just bought it yesterday and only watched the first episode so far. I haven't seen this show since its original airing)
Green Acres Season 1 (Just ordered it and hasn't arrived yet)
In addition, I'm recording The New Dick Van Dyke Show every week on Goodlife Network and getting tapes of (what I think is) a hilarious Canadian series called Puppets Who Kill. I'll burn both of these to DVD-R and create my own series sets!
Charlie Chan 01-24-2004, 10:41 AM Good question. It'll show how varied our tastes are.
My wife has:
first 5 seasons of "Friends" on DVD. (Season 6 is coming out next week.)
S1 of "Law and Order" (S2 being held up by Universal's ownership change).
I have:
MTM S1 (sad to know the idiots at Fox has said this will likely be it because they don't think the sales will be there; of course, if they hadn't overpriced S1..)
Avengers Mega Emma Peel set (complete Diana Rigg, enough said)
Larry Sanders S1 (another case where we've told not to expect more seasons)
Sherlock Holmes (Ronald Howard show from the 50's; selected episodes)
Gilligan's Island S1 (not out yet, but it's mine February 3)
We share:
Sopranos S1 - S4; our favorite show to watch together; absolutely riviting
Wish list for shows not yet announced:
Perry Mason - all time favorite show
Get Smart! - hilarious with great rewatchibility
Adventures of Superman - doesn't get any better than this
SawgrassSteve 01-24-2004, 04:13 PM None.
I never got around to ordering TMTMS (So I'm one of the people who helped take it out of distribution, sorry.) I've been considering "I Love Lucy," but I'm not crazy about the fact that they only give you 4 episodes per dvd (+ bonuses), and there are 8 or 9 dvds per season. And they're expensive. List price is 15.00/dvd.

You may want to check out the I Love Lucy complete first season box set. If you shop around, you'll be surprised at how good deals can be found; I saw it at Sam's Club for something like $65.
My understanding is that season two will be packaged much more sensibly (similar to the Van Dyke DVDs).
I am not a huge fan of ILL so I didn't pick up the box, but I've heard generally good things about it.
Regarding Mary Tyler Moore, it's still in distribution and is widely available, it's just that no more seasons are coming.
Kristen 01-24-2004, 05:07 PM I, of course, have TMTMS season 1. And Fox has changed their mind on future seasons. They now say that if the cost to produce them comes down, they WILL do the other seasons (probably without as many bonuses, so they can sell them cheaper!). And Steve, I'm ashamed of you for not buying Season 1!! j/k
Kristen
Lolac 01-24-2004, 09:38 PM Besides TDVDS Seasons 1 and 2 with season 3 on pre-order, I have the following:
I Love Lucy- Columbia House Collectors edition S 1 and 2 (My kids love these!)
M*A*S*H Seasons 1-5. I will buy the season sets until Radar leaves the show which is, in my opinion, when M*A*S*H jumped the shark.
Hogan's Heroes on VHS, complete set.
Pre-ordered Barney Miller, season 1.
The Mary Tyler Moore Show, season 1. If more season sets come out, I will order those as well.
My wish list:
The Andy Griffith Show
Get Smart- as Charlie Chan mentioned
This is a good topic, it shows how varied our tastes are, even though we all have one show in common, TDVDS. Can't wait for season 3!
Lolac

I know, dumb move on my part - and I'm sorry, honey! Forgive me? :(
Rob
Charlie Chan 01-25-2004, 11:45 PM I was at my local Sam's Club today and noticed that they've greatly expanded their selection of DVD box sets.
No Dick Van Dyke yet, but they do now have MTM for $29.99 which is waaaay cheaper than the $49.99 that the morons at Fox Home Entertainment put on as a MSRP for this set.
I still maintain that Fox is partially responsible for the poor sales of this set by putting a ridiculous price on it.
By the way, you can add "Curb Your Enthusiasm" Season One to my list of TV on DVD. My better half surprised me with it this weekend. I would not recommend anyone who recently had surgery to watch this show because your stiches will come loose from laughing so hard.

B&W Fan - you've got a wonderful collection there. No wonder you're selling your house; you need a bigger one just to make room for your DVDs!
How are the Abbott and Costello sets? I used to really like their TV show, more so than even their movies. There were only 52 or so episodes if I recall correctly.
Good luck with getting "my" movies on DVD from your friend. I hope the quality is good. I've tried unsucessfully to convince Fox to release them commercially. It seems that the wife of the owner/chairman of Fox won't allow them to be shown or otherwise made available commercially.

Thanks Steve and Charlie Chan. I admit to my love for classic (and some not so "classic") tv shows. There are others I'd have in my possession already, but money doesn't grow on trees (does it?) so while I own quite a few of my favorites, there are still some outstanding that have been released but will have to wait (like the Honeymooners, Green Acres, Doctor Who, and Mr. Ed).
Also, I meant to add a few more to my "Wish List".
Like CC, I'd love to have the Adventures of Superman on dvd. And Hogan's Heroes, The Partridge Family, The Cosby Show, Time Tunnel, Big Valley ...
Oh, forget trying to name them all. There isn't enough bandwidth.

CC,
You're correct about the Abbott & Costello Show. It ran only 2 seasons and there were 52 episodes. Right now, with volumes 9 and 10 right around the corner, that will give us 40 episodes total (they are putting 4 episodes on each disk). They will only need 3 more volumes to complete the show, and I expect they will release them before the year is up. They look great, and since I love "the boys" so much (I have all their films as well) it's a must buy for me.
As for the Charlie Chan movies, I too have been very disappointed in Fox's stance on releasing these. Of course you're aware of the debacle last summer when FMC stopped a Chan Marathon in mid-stream because of the "PC Police" that complained Charlie Chan was an unfair characterization of Asian-Americans. Since that time, FOX has hidden their Chans and I really doubt we will see them again any time soon (on tv or dvd).
I have a guy making me copies of all the Fox CC films (24 of them total) and he comes highly recommended. I expect the copies to all be very very good. I should be getting them soon, and when I do I'll let you know how they are. The other CC films from Monogram are not as important to me at this moment, but I will eventually get them on dvd as well.
Take care,
B&W "sorry to wander off topic from TDVDS, but we will all be getting our Season 3 set soon enough and be talking about it for a long time" fan
Larry Surrell 01-29-2004, 08:47 PM Does anybody know the status of getting The Adventures of Superman released on DVD? I have heard there's a petition circulating on the Internet to get WB to release the series (it seems the head honchos at Time Warner are clueless about the potential profits from releasing old TV shows on DVD) but don't know how successful it has been at changing the bean counters' minds.
I have been considering making my own DVD-Rs of Superman since Goodlife network airs two episodes each Saturday, but the video quality of their film transfers is not the greatest. Besides, if the series is released on DVD my efforts in creating my own set will have been for naught

I don't know anything about whether or not WB (do they own the rights?) is considering the release of this show at this time. Frankly, I've never heard even a rumor of this show being released. I kinda doubt it's even being discussed right now for a release.
On the other hand, as we speak I have someone making me copies of that show on dvd. I'll let you know how they turn out, just like I told Charlie Chan I'd let him know how my CC films come out on dvd when I get them.
I know the set I'm getting isn't gonna be top notch, but it's been so long since I've seen it that I figured it was worth it.
B&W "yep, there are still alot of classic tv shows out there that aren't being released to dvd - we are very fortunate that Doug Denoff led the charge to get us these wonderful Dick Van Dyke Show dvds" fan
Charlie Chan 01-29-2004, 11:37 PM There have been some rumblings on the Superman yahoo group about getting the 104 Superman episodes on DVD.
Time Warner has, in my opinion, been excellent lately about getting classic movies out on DVD and they're starting to get their classic TV out too (Gilligan's Island comes out next week).
The best bet for getting the Superman TV show out is for the rumored big screen update to come out. Lately, a chance for a tie-in almost always guarantees a TV DVD box set.
The Goodlife and TVLand airings are edited and missing several minutes per episode.
By the way, look for Noel Neill (Lois Lane) to star in one of the commercials during the Super Bowl.
ScottD 04-05-2004, 11:56 PM Well I'm a tv show on DVD fanatic--I never watch regular tv anymore. I make my own weekly schedule! Here's my list:

Carrie 04-06-2004, 09:46 AM My list isn't very long...yet. ;) These are the ones I have so far:
The Dick Van Dyke Show - Seasons 1-3 (season 4 is pre-ordered)
Three's Company - Season 1
Will & Grace - Season 1
I'm hoping to be able to get season 1 of The Mary Tyler Moore Show and season 2 of Three's Company and Will & Grace soon. I'm also saving up to get Who's the Boss? and Laverne & Shirley when they come out. The following shows are on my wish list:
Get Smart
Bewitched
Home Improvement
Wings
The Drew Carey Show
Larry Surrell 04-06-2004, 07:55 PM ScottD,
I didn't know the Rifleman was on DVD. I watched it in its original run when I was a kid and haven't seen it in years. I remember the kid in the show always had some sort of crisis every week that his father would have to bail him out of! I'll have to look for the DVDs the next time I'm at Best Buy.
ScottD 04-06-2004, 11:40 PM MPI Home Video has put out 2 sets of The Rifleman. They are 4-disc sets with 20 episodes per set. They're not in any order but most seem to be from the earlier seasons, and the first set does start with the first shows where Lucas and Mark come to settle in Northfork. The price is reasonable and I think the picture quality is very good, much better than any prints you see on tv. Not much as far as extras, but the first set has a short bloopers reel which features a lot of Chuck Connors swearing--it's pretty funny if you're not offended by that kind of thing. I've also recently read on MPI's website that they're planning to release more episodes later this year. I really hadn't seen the show before, but picked it up because I love westerns and thought I'd like it. It's a great show and quite different from a lot of the other western series in that it features a father raising his son alone.
LucyFan 04-14-2004, 11:41 PM These are TV shows I have on DVD:
"I Love Lucy" - Various Volumes of Season 1
"The Honeymooners" - Classic 39
"Green Acres" - Season 1
"Gilligan's Island" - Season 1
"Mary Tyler Moore" - Season 1
"The Jeffersons" - Season 1
The Best of "Mister Ed" - Volume 1
"The Lucy Show" - Various episodes
"The Andy Griffith Show" - Various episodes
My DVD wish list:
All 5 seasons of "The Dick Van Dyke Show" (I won't buy any season unless it comes down to 1 buck or less per episode. As it stands now, each season of TDVDS has around 30 episodes and the cost is 50 bucks per season - that's quite expensive for me).
The other volumes of the first season of "I Love Lucy" that I don't have and the second season.
The second season of "The Jeffersons".
The first season of each one of these Garry Marshall shows (coming out this summer): "Happy Days", "Laverne & Shirley", and "Mork and Mindy".
The Best of "Here's Lucy" (coming out soon)
The entire series of "Sanford and Son" (seasons 1-4 are out already).
The first and second season of "Three's Company" (I haven't bought the first season of this show because it's rip-off: 17 bucks for ONLY six episodes - it's not worth it to me. They need to lower the price down to at least 7 bucks.
algebra74 04-18-2004, 01:27 PM well LucyFan, do I have GREAT news for you. Yesterday, I just found out that amazon.com is doing some sort of a promotion, and for a limited time only, amazon.com is selling the first season for only $19.99! Yes, I couldn't believe it either. This is only 66 cents per episode and over 70% off retail price. If I were you, I would take advantage of this fantastic deal immediately because I am sure that it won't last.
Unfortunately ScottD, I am believe that we may never get Gunsmoke on DVD. That is, in complete season sets. It seems as though the longer-running series, or those more deserving of DVD sets than short-running ones, are finding it harder and harder to make it to DVD. I am sad to say that I don't think anyone would be willing to invest in releasing 20 complete season sets.
DVD sets I own:
Little House on the Prairie- Seasons 1-3
Dick Van Dyke Show-Seasons 1-2
Rocky and Bullwinkle-Season 1
Green Acres-Season 1
Gilligan's Island-Season 1
The Best of Mister Ed
I Love Lucy-Complete First Season
ScottD 04-18-2004, 11:22 PM Yes Algebra, I'm afraid you're probably right about Gunsmoke! I'd be more than happy though to at least get the first six seasons when it was a half-hour show. I've recorded seasons 7-11 off of The Westerns Channel, which is great since they're shown commercial-free, uncut, and with excellent picture quality. I also think that we may one day see more of the older classics once the studios have released all of their current hot properties. I hope that's the case anyway!
barwars 04-20-2004, 06:46 PM TV DVDs are probably the best thing ever....
