View Full Version : I Hate Being Shy
~LadyJess~ 01-21-2004, 11:14 PM All right so there's this really hot guy at my work, his name is George and he's 19. He works out back though so I hardly ever see him but when I do I never say anything. I don't know if he even rememers my name because everytime he sees me it's only for a few seconds and I probably have this stupid grin plastered on my face. I just wish I can talk to him but I can't, not even a simple, "Hey." It's like the words don't even come out. I hate that I do this, I'm more outgoing than I have ever been in my life yet I'm still that shy little girl I always was and I hate that.

Oh, God, I'm the same exact way. It's awful...I'm known as the shy kid at school. I hate that.
david&maddie4ever 01-21-2004, 11:38 PM I was extremely shy until third grade...I mean extremely. Luckily, I grew out of it; now, I'm somewhere in between, but definitely not insanely introverted. :D I have achieved my goal. patriot: Go me.

I'm exactly the same way when it comes to guys. I can't talk to them, or if I do, I must sound like a total moron.

That's not going to miraculously make you not shy. I take Paxil and while I have overcome some fears, that is definitely not one of them. Being shy around someone you're attracted to is just normal.

I wouldn't worry about any of that. :D I mean, if he's Prince Charming, he'll see through the shyness.
I get more freaked out around the "popular people." :o

webuster 01-22-2004, 03:57 PM I hate being shy too! I started a new school this year, and I wish I could have a second chance in reliving the beginning of the school year. Looking back, people made solid impressions of eahc other in the first few weeks (except for myself)- and their impressions have lasted. I talk to them a bit more, some a lot more, but I'm not the person who can address the whole class, tell a joke etc. I find it hard to start speaking, like a light switch- it takes more power to switch it on that to keep it running 2 hours. It's difficult. I wish I could shout out answers and shout out witty jokes b4 sum1 else did, but no! It's a shame, at the start of the year I wanted to join the drama club, was too shy- now I have the confidence, but it's far too late! I judge myself way way way too much, and I hate it. I'm good at writing, it's the talking and interacting gets me down. However, I find it easier to exist amongst a small group of friends. But, I guess ,'ignorance is bliss' comes into play as well, since I have some negative oppinions on extremely outgoing people, yet they judge themselves so little they don't care. I WISH I DIDN'T CARE!
This thread's given me the chance to have a little outburst. Thank god.
KerriBerri687 01-22-2004, 05:03 PM when i was little i was SO shy. i wouldnt even talk to my friends and some of my family. i would sooner freeze than ask someone to help me button my coat. haha it was so pathetic..
but now im not really quiet. i mean of course around ppl ive never met before i am but im pretty loud otherwise:)

Zoloft is candy. It never worked for me, I took it off and on from 98-2002 since it was the only medication that didn't give me deathly side effects. I'm seriously beginning to wonder if it's candy or medicine, perhaps I should take the whole bottle to see if it'll do something. ;)
I'm the same way. I can't bring myself to talk to anyone, it's hard even when I'm buying something at a store when someone talks to me. Even when people are being nice to me and talking to me, it's hard for me to keep talking. I can't hold a conversation.
Hollow 01-22-2004, 05:55 PM i was really shy until i was 12, and i still am a little. i think taking paxil helped.

That's what my doctor recommended for me.
And yeah, in school I don't talk to people. Woo.

Exactly. That's all meds do is make you happier you're a freak. I'd rather die than take them. Zoloft made me even more moody than I already was, and that's a big thing, seeing as they think I'm bi-polar.
The Modfather 01-22-2004, 06:14 PM I'm shy too. I sit next to this girl I've got a crush on in Geography. Everytime she says "Hi, Lucas" I blush like crazy

Or I can only talk to the guys that I know nothing can happen with. All of my guy friends have girlfriends and for some reason the older guys I am attracted to are all the ones who are married with kids (mostly guys who work at the office with me.) It's like I know nothing will happen with them so it's easier for me to talk to them but the second a single guy comes along, especially an attractive one, I go mute.
*Marilyn Monroe* 01-22-2004, 09:56 PM I have trouble being NICE to the guys I like. Maybe I'm stuck in 4th grade mentality, but I'm a huge sarcastic bitch to the guys I like. Oh well...I don't have much trouble talking to them, if they initiate the conversation.

Are you my twin? The same thing goes on in my head, too. AND I wanted to try out for drama but didn't have the guts, and I always want to bust out a witty comment...it's like at the tip of my tongue, but I just can't say it...I worry way too much about people judging me when it's really me that's doing the most judging and I can't get past that.

me too. i never talk in class. if anyone talks to me that isnt my friend i answer with one syllable so they'll leave me alone. last week i got sent to the office and when i got back to class everyone was like "o0o0o did you get detention?" and they were trying to look at the papers i brought back and i snapped at them and told them it was none of their business.

Yeah, its natural to be a little nervous around a guy you like. I've gone from being being pretty shy in elementary school, to being very outgoing, each has a diff set of problems. I def wouldnt call myself a shy person now, but nerves still get the better of me every so often. When I'm nervous I shift into this super-nice fakey mode and kind of put on that cover so I can talk to someone. I hate doing that but its sort of a natural mechanism I guess.

Czas na Zywiec 01-23-2004, 12:14 AM yea, I used to be like that, but ever since november of 2001, I took a complete 180 degree turn for the better. it was so weird for me to talk to someone; now my friends think it's weird if I don't say anything to someone I don't know. I never took any medications, just threw myself out there in and i'm still in one peice. high school might seem like hell if you don't make anything out of it, but college is totally different. no one knows who you are/were/will be so it's a fresh start with every single person on that campus, and it's the same for them. point is, if you don't want to do anythign in high school, ahng in there. college is 100% better. i'll add a lifetime guarantee on that statement. ;)
¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 01-23-2004, 01:30 AM It takes me a while to open up and be comfortable. I like to joke around people, but around strangers, I just feel akward so I dont say it. Youd think me working with customers all day, Id open up more.. but no. Some try and start convo's with me, but most of the time I just kinda freak out and answer with one words and smile a lot. It also depends on who you are. Some people I just feel naturally comfortable with from the get go and feel like Ive known them my whole life and can be me from the start. I went to school with the same kids for 12 years, yet each grade it took me til like, November/December to fully open up and be me. Weird.
Lady T 01-23-2004, 04:52 AM I used to be very shy and very quiet when i was younger, today, I am still on the reserve side, yeah, I know how it feels when it comes to meeting a man that you fine attractive, I was brought up to be a lady and to this day, I never approach a man that I am attracted to, I wait for him to approach me, I wish I was just the opposite, I have a couple of girlfriends who are very aggressive and outgoing and have no problems approaching a man that they find attractive...I could never to that, for me is just not lady like and not in good taste...

Yeh, it's an awful thing. What's worse is I can't be mean to people, or remotely dishonest! I dwell on things alot, small words and phrases, looks, etc. There are people I really want to scream at but I just can't. It's terrible, because my angry self (which is rarely seen) is rarely taken seriously! In Drama, I always know how to act a role, but I'm put with people I can't work with! I just wish I could be in some environment with people that appreciate drama and stuff- people that appreciate it don't knock each other. Sometimes I crack up a little, sometimes I want to start jumping onto tables singing Green Eggs and Ham or something. I don't like watching myself, in school we have to record video for 'oracy prjects'- which I hate. I've always thought I don't have a conventional 'joking voice'. Ick, it's terrible

I can't be mean to people, either. Everyone says how I'm so nice...which, I guess is okay...but I never defend myself. That's why they say nice people finish last. I always hate hearing my voice, too, when it's taped. I sound like a boy.
webuster 01-23-2004, 05:18 PM Being nice is good, but people, even though people seem to want people to be nice to them- they sometimes seem to want to make you angry. Women for example, want to go with the guy who wants to use and take advantage, be unpolite and 100% manly- insensitive, watchin' the football 24/7! It's downright annoying.
webuster 01-23-2004, 05:20 PM Also- I suspect there's one person I know that sometimes pisses me off to try get me to be mean- but I really don't want to just in case, either that or she's a sadistic biotch.

I don't like my voice either. I used to think I sounded so much like a guy but now it doesn't bother me, I'd rather have the voice I have than a high-pitched girly one. No offense to people with that kind of voice. ;)
Ewan's My Man 01-24-2004, 03:14 PM Yea, I'm friendly and really outgoing. I can have shy moments but *shrugs*.
Polniaczek033 01-24-2004, 04:49 PM I'm a loser...
I don't talk to anyone that I'm not friends with.. and I don't talk much during class really..
If I talk to someone that's not my friend, I'm usually insulting them or threatening to kill them..:)
And I like to kick people... if they crack their knuckles.. or talk to me in math class..
Ok.. I'm weird.
Swimfan85 01-24-2004, 05:34 PM I have never been shy, for as long as remember, I have always had to be the center of attention, not so much as I have gotten older, but I am still very loud and out-going, I have never had a problem with talking to random people, they are generally are like "do I know you?" At school I am tight with my crew, but I am friendly with people in to, I am kinda weird though...oh well...yah me with guys tho, I joke around and charm them all, they are all fighting over me, I cant help it... jk, but I usually joke/fool around with them
EricIdlefan 01-24-2004, 07:13 PM I am only shy when I am around people and don't like crowds even though I like looking at crowds but when it comes to writing my feelings down with paper and pen or typing on the internet is really helpful because I say things but don't mean them and don't show my emotions really good unless my feelings are hurt and they get hurt very easily and I about cry but I rarely smile and/or laugh but writing really gets out my feelings and my emotions more because people say I am a person of a few words!!
webuster 01-24-2004, 07:32 PM I've so many ideas, just to shy to share them in class. Instead I let people with crappier ideas (not that mine are always better) take over.
I hate walking through shopping centres alone. It's like everyone is focusing on you. Plus, fast cold air makes my eyes water (they water easily anyway), which is bad cos I look like I'm about to cry then...!

writing down my feelings never helps unless i do it on the internet so everyone can see it. lol. for one thing i always have so much to say and i dont have enough patience to waste my time writing it all down. i write down lyrics to songs sometimes though, that helps a little.

webuster 01-25-2004, 12:33 PM I don't think being creative helps- it helps in venting anger, and ideas- but I think I'm still just as shy. However, I'm always made read out any stories and poems I write, and each time you read out in class- it gets easier.
It's odd to, some people seem to prey on shy people for being shy- which is like holding someone's head in the mud while they're already down.

It is. Other people like to tease shy people, but they don't realize it's so hard all ready, and it just makes us feel even worse and we get more shy.
