What is so speical about this episode? People are upset because TBS doesn't show it.

It's not my favorite.

Just the fact that they don't show it alone is enough!

Think about it...if you have 129 episodes of your fav'rite show on tape, all but 1, wouldn't it bug you too? lol :p

Lucikly I started tapin' these about 13 or so years ago in reruns back home, so I have that'un.

And it is a pretty good show!

 Exactly.

I started taping in May of last year...Just right before their rollover to the NBC years at the end of May (altho I taped a few here and there beforehand), and I had 129 eps on tape by the time I finished, but I didn't have "Gert Rides Again" and I was DESPERATE to get it on tape...So I had someone make me a copy...Now I have all 130 eps. :)

How good shape are your tapes now, BTW? :)

They're alright...some better than others. But all watchable. I could start tapin' off TBS and re-build my collection, but I've just always thought, "eh, I have 'em anyway", lol. But I think I'll start at the next NBC rollover to get 'em even better quality.

If only they'd air the first handful of NBC and syndicated episodes in the order that makes sense!

I taped all the episodes off one of my locals back in 1992. Then when TBS started to air it in the fall of 1997, I taped them all again. I wanted to tape them off of cable, because the pciture is always better on cable channels than on locals I've noticed. The second time around I had cable & a satellite dish both, so I taped them off TBS on my satellite dish & the picture and sound was perfect. Now its been almost seven years & the first set of tapes from 1992 is finally starting to age. I'm thinking about taping them all again, I just can't resist, its one of my all-time favorite shows. Although I always thought & will always think the TV show can't hold a candle to the old family sketches. I hope all of you who have never seen them before, get a chance to see these classic comedy masterpieces on TV Land. I taped all 40-something of the family sketches when they aired on USA a couple years ago. Miss Vicki you are a true Vicki Lawrence fan, I would love to know your opinion of the family sketches.

Hey :)

I LOVED the "The Family" sketches they showed on TV Land...They showed 17 during the marathon...I'm really hoping they show all the sketches this time around, so that I can have them on tape. :)

How many tapes did it take for all 130 episodes?

And, why exactly isn't this episode aired? Is it controversial?

Right now I've got 123 on 21 tapes. I've seen the other 7, just either had 'em at one time 'n lost 'em before I made my "master collection" (lol), or hadn't gotten 'em on tape yet.

For me, I taped them in SLP format on 6-hour tapes, so it takes up about 11 tapes. TallGuy did his in SP format, which takes up more tapes. :D

No, it's not controversial - that's what I thought at the time too. I think it has something to do with TBS not having the rights to that episode...but I still don't understand.

TBS did air this episode during the first two or three rotations back in '97 & '98, because I taped it the first time they aired it.

I'm a big Mama's Family fan (and a Vicki and Carol Burnett fan) and yep, they HAVE aired the episode, but it has been a LONG time since it has aired. I do remember watching the show in 1997 and seeing the episode. I didnt tape anything until 2002 and by then the episode wasn't airing, in fact, I don't think the episode has aired since like 1998, maybe 1999. I didn't keep up with the show the way I did when I was taping it, so I have no clue...

Actually, since I started watching this show on TBS, back in about 99/00, the Jeopardy episode always comes before the Hawaiian eps. The only problem I've noticed with the Hawaiian eps is that they air a different episode in between the 1st and 2nd parts, which totally screws up the continuity if you're watching the whole thing. Other than that, I think they do a good job.

I am also a huge fan of this show and started taping it last year. Unfortunately, I had all the syndicated eps done before I realized that the VCR I was using had dirty heads and the picture degraded in literally months, so I decided to re-do them. I did them this time with a new Sony w/ 19-Micron heads, and they are perfect. You can literally barely tell that they are EP, they're really crisp and clear. (I highly recommend 19-Micron). Anyway, right now, I have almost every ep on 9 tapes. I have about half of the last season done w/out commercials, and am waiting for it to loop around again. Then, I plan on re-recording the NBC eps, then I will be totally done with what TBS airs! :)

Awesome show, and like Mama says: You can all go straight to hell!

LOL! Just kidding you guys...that has to be my favorite quote though...

That and "you could fry bacon in the nude without a second thought"

Okay, I have no idea what dirty heads are but I don't think my VCR has them because its brand new, but what kind of tapes does anyone recommend for things you tape to actually look like they aired right off TV and to not be grainy? I have high quality tapes and it still looks very grainy.

I've heard JVC tapes are really good, but they're getting harder and harder to find. I wish they still made Scotch tapes - those were GREAT. :( I still have Scotch tapes, but I refuse to touch them...they have original late 80's/early 90's stuff on it.

I got most of season 4 on tape now. From "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do" to "Hawaii (1)" excluding "Mama's Girls" and "Mama Gets the Bird" somewhere in there.

My only complaint with TBS is that they show episodes WAY too early. After school would be sooooo great. I mean having to wake up at 6 everyday is getting harder andharder which is why I missed "Mama's Girls," "Mama Gets the Bird" and "Hawaii (2)."

I also missed "Ladies Choice" today, which means I'm only going to have 24 episodes from season 5 on tape and thats if I never oversleep again!!!

I calculated that it will take about 3 months for it to go around again so I'll have the entire show soon.

This show is the easiest to tape, as TBS actually airs eps in order! God, I wish I could tape Simpsons and King of Queens but UPN doesn't seem to have order anymore. They used to stay at least in the right season, but not anymore!

BTW, Miss Vicki, does it take 11 tapes with episodes back to back, or did you seperate the seasons. I mean, I am starting season 5 on a new tape even though I was only 3/4 through the one with season 4 on it.

Also, TallGuyinKy, which 6 episodes are you missing?

TALLguyinKY
01-30-2004, 08:21 PM
Well, they're not as "in order" as they should be (i.e., they didn't air "Hawaii" back to back, which would be the norm).

The 7 I'm missin' are:

"National Mama"
"Fly Naomi"
"Cat's Meow"
"Steal One, Pearl Two"
"Dependence Day"
"Mama's Medicine Show"
"Guess Who's Going To Dinner"

I've seen 'em all, just don't have 'em (though I had NM, FN, CM, and DD at one time).

I'll get 'em on the next go-round, though.

Oh, don't worry about the edit---I didn't even notice that till ya pointed it out!

Her #4 "Notable Guest Appearance" at IMDB is listed as so:

4. "Mama's Family" (1983) playing "Gert Corey" in episode: "Gert Rides Again" 1984

and she even appeared on "The Carol Burnett Show" 4 times! :)

I couldn't take any pictures of where it was just Naomi with her head up, but I did notice...Her hair isn't as curly...she has it down and it's a little more straight, but still poofy. Like he said, it was the only time she ever had her hair like that. I thought it was nice, actually. :)

But even when her hair's long, it's never straight straight. There's always a liiiiiiiiiittle slight curl to it somewhere...heehee. :p

Which network does own the rights to this episode?

I'm not that much of a fan of the NBC episodes but I'd still like to get this one on tape. Though at my rate, I'd probably miss it even if TBS did air it. God, its getting harder and harder to wake up at 6 AM let me tell you. :(

I was hoping to get the full season 5 and I've already missed three episodes.

Ladie's Choice
Very Dirty Dancing
Bedtime For Bubba

Are those episodes any good? I extimate that they'll reair sometime in May, so if I don't sleep overtime again, I'll have every episode by May! Woo Hoo!

So why do some MF sites---even Javed's!---keep spellin' it with a "D"?? We never hear a character put a "d" on the end of "Boylen", yet for some reason there are some big MF fans out there who think it's that way----augh, I don't get it! lol

You are correct. SP is the best quality you can get, but it uses up more tape (you would be able to fit 12 episodes, equal to 6 hours, on one tape in SLP mode....but you would only be able to fit 4 episodes, equal to 2 hours), so you have to be sure to have a LOT of tapes handy for that. :)

Thanks!

BTW, I can fit 18 MF episodes on one tape in SLP mode, but thats without commercials or end credits.

I'm just going to continue with SLP mode.

BTW, I just got these high grade Maxell tapes that are really good looking. Almost like TV.

I just bought my tapes recently, I got the 8 hour tapes, so I can get 16 episodes on one tape. Which I figure I can get 128 out of the 129 episodes TBS airs (without Gert). I bought Panasonic tapes because they are pretty nice. I just set my recorder for 6am because I am not going to get up everyday and edit commercials or I would miss episodes too. However, it would be nice not to have commercials though.

The 9 episodes I'm missing are:

"Mama's Girls"
"Mama Gets the Bird"
"Hawaii (2)"
"Ladies Choice"
"Very Dirty Dancing"
"Bedtime for Bubba"
"Tri-State's Most Wanted"
"Blast from the Past"
"Mama Fights Back"

I had "Tri-State's Most Wanted" but retardedly, I taped over it with Survivor: All Stars, forgetting that I had rewound the tape.

I'll get them on the next rotation along with the rest of the series.

"Mama's Girls"
"Mama Gets the Bird"
"Hawaii (2)"
"Ladies Choice"
"Very Dirty Dancing"
"Bedtime for Bubba"
"Tri-State's Most Wanted"
"Blast from the Past"
"Mama Fights Back"

I had "Tri-State's Most Wanted" but retardedly, I taped over it with Survivor: All Stars, forgetting that I had rewound the tape.

I'll get them on the next rotation along with the rest of the series.

God, I need a DVD recorder badly!

I think "Mama's Girls" is the worst episode.

It's nice to look back at them years later and see all the commercials from years gone past. I know - now, we hate them, but what about in a few years?

I have a tape from March 1990 with a lot of commercials on it, and it's a nice trip down memory lane.

So, I don't mind the commercials...Whenever I ask somebody to make a copy of a tape for me, I tell them it's up to them. :)

Good point. I like going down memory lane too. The commercials are not a big problem for me anyway. Just fast foward and their not a big deal. But I can see where it would be fun to view commercials that are several years old on a tape. Commercials are apart of the viewing experience. I would love to have the original syndicated Mama's on tape with their orginal 1986-1990 commercials. That would be really cool!
