My parents finally got fed up with AOL services and we switched to Earthlink last night. I'm still learning the ropes, but so far, I like it so much better than America Off-Line.

Does anyone else here have Earthlink or had it in the past? Is it really better than AOL?

I've had AOL for as long as I can remember, and I love it. It has great features.

Good luck with Earthlink though. :)

It's weird you somehow got on the mailing list. AOL wouldn't knowingly send discs to anyone under the age of 18. Do you subscribe to any Time, Inc. magazines?

My family used to have AOL but we got rid of it last year at around this time. I didn't like it when I used the boards because I couldn't do moderator stuff like stick/unstick threads, close/open threads, etc. because of the way they handled cookies. People also couldn't vote in polls for a long time for the same reason. Over the summer these flaws were corrected by TJ and since then, nobody has had trouble voting in polls or anything.

Anyways my family got Road Runner and it is pretty fast. It recently got up to 50 times faster than it used to. The only problem is that when I go visit other people's houses, I have to get used to their dial-up but that isn't too hard to do.

I've been told that I don't even need AOL since I have some super high speed modem thing with my cable company. I pay $45 for that per month, and I still pay for AOL, but only because I'm so used to it.
All that stuff confuses me.

You don't even have to be 18 to get them...I've subscribed to Seventeen magazine since 1997, and just more recently, they've started sending AOL CD's too. They put them in a shrinkwrap bag with the mag, then shrinkwrap it and send it out to people that subscribe.

I have AOL and I like it. I had Juno a few years ago and had a lot of problems with it.

We have Cogeco (http://www.cogeco.com/) high speed cable internet. It's okay, but we're thinking of getting LincSat (http://www.lincsat.com/), which is a satellite internet service. I hear that satellite internet is the fastest service available. I think we need to do some more research, to see if it's worth the investment. :)

As you know, I'm an AOL employee, Janice. If you have broadband through your cable company, you can get AOL for $14.95 on the AOL For Broadband BYOA (Bring Your Own Access) price plan.

Does your AOL software connect through your broadband connection, or does it still dial up through the phone line?

I'm glad I got rid of AOL. It was horrible. I got sick of constantly getting kicked offline. It was also really slow, even with their broadband. And everytime I called for help, the people were always either rude or had no clue what they were doing.

I would say it connects through Broadband. I remember paying for the rental of their modem. That's what the installation guy told me.
My phone is never tied up. I don't have two phone lines. I used to before I got the high-speed Comcast thing. My computer is lightening fast. AOL Broadband is not yet available in my area. I always check when it comes up on my Welcome page by typing my area code in.
I pay AOL for the year. It's $20 monthly when paid annually, instead of $24 (I think it's $24).
My brother and a few others have told me that I'm crazy for having AOL, even that I can still access it without paying for it. That makes no sense.
I wish I could have AOL with their Broadband. I imagine it would be cheaper.
I'm sorry if this isn't making any sense, but it's the best way I can describe it.

Janice,

To tell you the truth, it's usually cheaper to connect AOL through a competitor's broadband connection than it is to get the actual cable/DSL connection through AOL. Your best bet would be to change to the $14.95 AOL For Broadband BYOA price plan within the month before your prepaid year ($239.40/year) expires.

Thanks a bunch. I'm paid up through August, so do I have to wait until then, and when I call, do I ask for their billing department?
I hate calling AOL. I've gotten some people that were not too knowledgeable. Can I ask for you? lol.
I actually called them about my situation once, and the person didn't explain that BYOA that you're describing.
I really do love AOL though. Very user friendly for this computer dumbo. I love their message boards too....the entire AOL community is great.

Janice,

You don't have to wait until August. If you want to call in and change to BYOA now, you would get a prorated refund. $96.00 if my awful math is correct.

Thanks so much. I'll be all over that like white on rice in the morning. ;)
