View Full Version : Ever think about this with women from sitcoms....

I just realized this in a way, when you think or see a comedy in theaters the man is always the funnier than the women. I mean there are those few movies where a women stands out but usually are over shadowed by their leading Man. You think of comedians from movies and Jim Carrey, Adam Sandler, Will Smith, Will Ferrall, and Marxx brothers come to mind, but usually not a women...

but then you think, sitcoms and women tend to be more funnier than men. I'm sure you can argue that but I believe that men can't touch a women's sitcom performance. Carol Burnett, Lucille Ball, Mary tyler moore...Can't be touched. John Ritter may have been a genius at slapstick along with Dick Van Dyke but Lucille Ball owned slapstick humor. The cast of friends- all the characters are very funny but sometimes I think the women over shine the men.

Am I right? Men over shine Women in theater but when it comes to television women over shine men?

Well i think that Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Meryl Streep, Halle Berry, Faye Dunaway, Glen Close, Demi Moore, Nichole Kidman, Reene Zellwegger and many, many others would STRONGLY disagree with that...

Don't get me wrong, I would say that women are extremely funny and infact I am a GIRL and I was voted class clown in my school, so I know funny and I know alot of movies with women in there who are funny, but I would say *my* favorite comedies usually have the men being funnier than the women but in *my* favorite sitcoms the women are funnier than the men.

perhaps in YOUR favorites, but overall i'd say they are about equal.

i was just saying "have you ever thought about this...."

how could you say they are equal? What makes you think they are equal in both ways.

TV like you stated John Ritter, Dick Van Dyke but there are lots more men that lead a comedy
Will and Grace the gay guy studying to be a Nurse he is hilarious
Ray Romano on Raymond
Will Smith on Fresh Prince
Scneider on One Day at a Time
Brian and Lowell on Wings
Jim - According to Jim
Al on Married with Children
Alex on Family Ties
I could go on forever

Movies
Drew Barrymore
Julia Roberts
Goldie Hawn
Bette Midler
Kate (Goldies daughter)

They are equal IMO, it is just a matter of what movies or shows you are watching....if you are going to see an Adam Sandler movie of course no one is going to write his co-star to be funnier then him so it all depends on who the comedic star of the show or movie is and then you can almost bet that the major comic is going to have the better comedy

Your right, when it comes to the movies women usually play the straight man.

Thank you. Women play the straightman in movies and women over shine men in television. Theres nothing wrong with it. I'm not dissing either sex, but its rather odd I think the way that turns out.

I honestly think women are funnier than men on tv and men in movies are funnier than women. Drew Barrymore, Julia Roberts, Reese Witherspoon, Godie Hawn.....I don't think they can touch the comic genuis of Jim Carrey, Will Ferrall, Adam Sandler...they even sell more at the box office. When you think comedy on tv, you right away hear Lucile Ball in your head. Mary Tyler Moore vs Dick Van Dyke? You can argue that either way. Carol Burnette. Laverne and Shirley...all great comic performances but I don't think any man could touch that.

Julia Roberts isn't a comic genius. Shes just another actress. She doesn't do slapstick humor. Shes not witty. Shes just an actress. Most of her movies aren't even comedies. They're romantic or dramas. and Jim Carrey MAKES more money than Julia Roberts does. Julia gets 20 million a picture, Jim gets 20 +. He got nearly 25 million for the Grinch & Bruce Almighty. His movies do better than Julia Roberts movies. I'm a big julia Roberts fan, don't get me wrong, but I wouldn't call her a comic actress. Jim Carrey is a genius in his comedy movies. Have you ever seen Liar Liar? Genius right there. Adam Sandler, may not be a favorite actor, but his movies are a hit whether or not how good they are. Will Farrell is on his way, just watch. By the beginning 2005 he'll be the next Jim Carrey. Elf was great. Old School, may have been the worse movie I saw in 2003 but Elf made up for it. You can't say they are geniuses. you don't know comedy then.

Men:
Jim Carrey
Will Ferrall
Adam Sandler
John Ritter
Desi Arnaz
Dick Van Dyke
Marxx Brothers
John Candy
Chris Farley
Matthew Perry
Tim Allen

Women
Lucille Ball
Jennifer Aniston
Goldie Hawn
Ellen Degeneres
Carol Burnett
Elizabeth Montgommery
Barbara Eden

Julia Roberts is one of the biggest stars alive today... for Erin Brokovich she got MORE THAN 25 MILLION dollars... I never said she was a comedy genuis... but to say i don't know comedy because i think that Jim Carey's sophmoric, lame and idiotic movies are GENUIS is just ridiculous... Adam Sandler? Funny yes, popular yes... GENUIS, NO... Also most of Julia Roberts movies are ROMANTIC COMEDIES...Ever seen Notting Hill, Mona Lisa Smile, Runaway Bride? All Romantic COMEIDES... She has a definet comedic streak... Also Will Farrell's ELF was funny i'll give u that, but he is not to be confused with a genuis.... Oh and Chris Farley is FAR from a genuis... he was an over-drugged, ompa-lompa who used the fact that he was overweight and drugged up to get laughs from the high-school crowd, no one took him serious as a comediane... I think the likes of Dezi Arnaz, Richard Prior, Robin Williams and so on would be totally offended to even be mentioned in the same company as him.... You obviously are either completley out-of-touch with genuis comedy or you are still in tenth grade, which would amount to about the same... What next Raven-Symone is a brillant actress with years of comedic genuis expierance under her belt?

Mostly agree with you but is Adam West really a comedian? I'd say he was more of a decent actor who appeared in a mildy amusing adaptation of a comic book...

Hmm good point about Adam West, I included him because he always makes me laugh/smile, and he played up Batman as campy. Maybe he's not directly a commedian but he's a funny guy all the same IMHO. :)

Robin Williams? ...what was that movie he was in that was really funny? Jack? HAHAHAHA no. Its just a difference in comic taste. Sure, Robin Williams is funny. Yeah hes a comic genius but I'd say Jim Carrey is funnier than him. Maybe you don't think so, but fine. Don't insult me personality and I didn't attack the actors you like, so don't make fun of the ones that I like. I'm gonna be the bigger person here and just let you believe and think what you want to. Its a free world. I just would say more people would agree with me than you, but its not a popularity contest. If someone would much rather see My Best friends wedding over Liar Liar or Monty Python and the Holy Grail, than Thats fine, but I honestly think that I know comedy better than alot of people do but I'm not prefect I maybe wrong, but Jim Carrey by far makes more money and is more well known than Julia Roberts. I'm sure for such a well educated person you know that :D

But hey, since you know what you're talking about then you can back up your opinion. Tell me why and how Jim Carrey is not a comic genius compared to someone else.

Robin Williams not funny? umm have u seen Mrs. Doubtfire, Good Morning Vietnam, Fathers day or ANY of his stand-up act? have u seen a single episode of Mork and Mindy? i guess not... Robin Williams is a comedy LEDGEND... Jim Carrey used sophmoric, lame-brained fart jokes to get comedy... any intellegant person would be offened by such humor... Julia Roberts is one of the most respected actresses alive today, she has an Academy Award and has been around for some 12+ years... She is just as known as Jim Carrey, if not more so... She is a media darling and no one opens movies like her, her movies always open big (with exceptions in Mona Lisa Smile, Mary Riley and Hook)... Julia Roberts is the female movie box office champion of all time... she has made more $ than Jim Carrey.

Heres a website the proves it http://www.the-numbers.com/people/records/index.html

Julia Roberts is # 19 and Jim Carrey all the way down at 27.

A Link to Julia Roberts all-time box-office gross- http://www.the-numbers.com/people/JROBE.html

You know why Robin Williams is a comedy legend? Because hes not funny anymore, he hasn't made a great comedy movie in years. Jim Carrey is still funny, so therefore won't be type cast as a legend for years. I guess you NEVER seen Liar Liar? He did slapstick comedy in that movie. (don't tell me slapstick isn't funny because Lucille Ball is a legend) and theres nothing wrong with Jim Carrey's type of comedy. There are soooo many types of comedy. Jim Carrey is a great actor even in his dramic roles such as Truman Show and he was great in Man on the Moon. Hes the comedian genius of this time. I respect all comedians whether i laugh at them or not. I really honestly do. If you really had a passion for comedy you would too. I never asked for Julia Robert's numbers, I asked you to back up your statement of to why Jim Carrey isn't a comic genius. 'sophmoric, lame-brained fart jokes' isn't really an answer. Julia Roberts has an oscar, so does that Hilary girl from Boys don't cry but shes not a great big star because of it. Jim Carrey has like 10 MTV movie awards. That doesn't mean an Oscar is over than, it just means different things. Whos to say whats better. Obviously hes doing something right to be grossing 200 million a movie. Julia Roberts hasn't made a highly sucessful movie in years unless you count Oceans 11 and you had Brad Pitt, Matt Damon,Andy Garcia & George Clooney in that as well. Surely she didn't carry that movie all on her own. Great movie by the way. I love Julia Roberts shes a great actress and I respect her alot. Julia Roberts shouldn't even be compared to Jim Carrey because they aren't even like eachother. They're not even in the same catagory. Its like comparing Oranges and Dust busters.

I have seen Liar, Liar and it DID NOT impress me at all... so what he jumped around and made a lot of noises... that is not comedy. Ace Venture: Pet Detective is a prime example of the moronic comedy that Jim Carrey is known for... Oh and btw, an MTV movie award means NOTHING in hHollywood, they are the joke of the entertainment community... an Oscar on the other hand is the eptiome of respect in the Hollywood world. and Yes Hillary Swank may not be a huge star that gorsses a lot but she has the respect of her community, something Jim Carrey doesn't have... oh and Robin Williams is ceartinly a funny guy, but yes he has gone on to more dramatic roles, such as his OSCAR WINNING role in Good Will Hunting, but the thing is if he went back to comedy he'd once again be a hit...Get your facts before u speak. Oh and grossing a lot does not make someone funny, true talent does.

Who are you to say what is comedy and what isn't? Who died and made you the boss and gave you ownership to define comedy? I have zero respect for you considering you can't even open your mind up even a little bit, but instead trash a great actor and a type of comedy. I'm sorry I don't have a dry blah sense of humor like you or that I don't oscar winners.

I have a dry sense of humor because i believe it is possible to have great comedy without using fart-jokes, noises and hitting yourself? Also just because i have a different opinon than you doesn't mean that u are right or that i am wrong, Can't we simply disagree? why does any differeance of opinon on here turn into an argument? why can't we just express different view-points? I mean really you aren't exactly the be-all-end-all of life, and i have just as much right as you to my opinons...

You can have an opinion. just don't force it down my throat. You just seem to be able to put a name on what comedy is and isn't. You make it seem like anyone who likes Jim Carrey's sense of humor lacks intellience because of something that makes them laugh. I think its rude the way you can judge others. Don't tell me what is funny and what isn't.
