ask Archie to stay home so they can have Dinner with the Jeffersons? I don't thnk that was right that he had to give up his ticket so he can behome to entertain guests. Couldn't they have postponed the Dinner with the Jeffersons until the following night? Another Dingbat mmoment for Edith.

Well I suppose you don't want any interesting debate on your threads then. Are you posting just to say Edith sucks nowadays? She's a character on the show. What can you do to change it now? But anyway....it's called compromise, and it's something mature people do in order to have nice relationships. Edith usually was the one who was "downsized" in this very traditional 1950's marriage. When Archie bent in her favor, to do something SHE wanted to do for a change, (besides caring for her husband, which she seemed to really enjoy in spite of having to live with such a man! ) it was a moment when we all could go "he's not as dumb as we think..." And then of course....he does something dumb or dumber than before. The thing with AB is he just doesn't GET it...he's CLUELESS. I don't really understand all this "Edith is an idiot" stuff....because Archie was the one who had very little to offer most of the time in terms of his intellect and instinct and compassion for others. It's only when PRESSED and pressed HARD that he shows a decent side--the side he keeps hidden lest he be seen less of a "man." Dwell on that for bit.

I know it's nothing I can do now, i'm just having a episode discussion. I just can't believe she would make him change his plans when he already had a paid ticket. And to make things worse, he finds out Louise husband never showed and went to the Mets game. UNBELIEVABLE!!!!

Good post, Viola. I still can't figure out why you (Sitcom Analyzer) don't like Edith...? Edith may seem like a dingbat at times, but she was smart. It just took her awhile to understand things. In a way, she's probably the smartest one in the family...and let's not forget honest.

She was just TOO NICE, especially when it came to Louise Jefferson. I just don't know if could have dealt with someone like Edith. But she had her funny moments

Okay...I see your point. If someone were that nice in real life (I'm sure there were people as nice as she was), they would have to be very careful of people taking advantage of them.

Yes! It's a TV SHOW! Like I said in another thread..somewhere...they didn't expect this show to run over and over and over so that we fans could drum up every little loophole and blip in the scripts, so I watch and just enjoy the show without getting to anal about it. But hey..you sure as hell live up to your screenname, SA!  Maybe the writers were grasping at cigars with this ep. We could tear all the episodes apart under that premise.

Like Archie took advantage of her for all of those years. That was the only kind of woman who could have been married to Archie.

That was the point of the comedy in that episode.

Besides, who was dumber? Was it Edith for asking him to do it or was it Archie for going along with it?

It's true that Edith should not have made plans for both of them without telling him, or at least leaving an out, such as "...unless my husband has something going on that I don't know about yet." And I agree Archie should not have scrapped his ball game plans because she did that. If I recall the ep, the whole family jumped on Archie saying "they [Jeffersons] wouldn't understand," meaning he would appear to be the bigot that he is. I don't think it's too smart, either, to coerce someone into putting on an act.

But I don't think what Edith does in this ep is as bad as the later ep where she makes hotel reservations for them in Atlantic City without tellling Archie anything about it, and again Archie has tickets to a sporting event. Planning a little surprise is one thing, but booking someone, even one's spouse, to a hotel stay for a couple of nights, then getting mad because he doesn't like it, goes too far.

BTW it's silly to berate a character the way you are doing about Edith. I think one key to the success AITF achieved was that people really related to the characters. Most people know someone like Archie and someone like Edith. A & E are both probably exaggerations from the true-life persons like them we know, but that's just comedy. If you do know someone like Edith, who is not book-smart, but is kindhearted to a fault, I doubt if you have such a negative opinion of her (or him, maybe).

You people do realize that this is just a TV show right?

As far as the Mets tickets go you could sympathize with him. He had his heart set on going to the game and NOT to entertain guests. If I remember correctly it turned out George Jefferson wound up at the Mets game.

Archie had his heart set on going to the game.

Edith wanted to welcome new neighbors.

It was the formula for the show. If Edith had simply made it for the next night it would not be much of a script.

And were Mets tickets so hard to come by that Archie could not have gone the next night either? They do play around 160 games a year.

Speaking for myself I have Jets season tickets and I won't miss a game for ANYTHING. I tell my family it is only 8 days out of the year. Don't count on me for ANYTHING on those days. I will oblige the rest of the time.

Sure Archie's the star and we get that point, but I think people should be able to say they like all the other characters EXCEPT Archie and still be considered a fan of this television show. There are times I'd rather watch Mike and Gloria's interactions than listen to Archie go on with his prattle. You can still be a fan without liking all the characters--as you have indicated by saying you're not too fond of Louise and Gloria and your latest target..."Edith The Good." I think Edith is just as much a star of AITF as Archie. Jean Stapleton was flawless. As was just about all the other major players.

This is probably true but ALL of the characters were extreme to a point..

Archie was probably more gentle than most of the characters despite being a bigot.

Was it his fault he was a bigot? Some people are raised that way.

He provided for his wife, daughter and deadbeat son in law who made his life miserable.

Meathead was hardly desirable or a "nice " guy. He had a "cause" for everything and was basically ANGRY all the time and had no respect for the master of the house which was Archie.

Whenever I am in my Father in Law's house I am totally respectable to him regardless of his beliefs..And If I had been forced to live with him I sure would not run around antagonizing him or threatening him like the Meathead character does on a regular basis.

And Gloria was just a flunkie spoiled brat who loved getting in the middle of the two. What was so desirable about her?

Edith was a dingbat for sure. Full of love. Reminds most people of their grandmother. But her character was very unrealistic of a older lady who lived many years with a bigot husband.

George Jefferson was a racist.

And all the other roll players were just there for shock value to get all offended by Archie. And belittle him.

That episode introduced the Jeffersons though. I am not sure Archie met them before that night... In fact from what I understand they held the "George" character FOR Sherman Hemsley because he was doing theater and could not do the show which explains the "uncle". They saved the part for Sherman.

Archie was white trash. He was a hateful bigot who mellowed a bit in later episodes. And yes, we all have to take personal responsibility for our actions and beliefs. I loved it when Mike and Gloria made a fool out of the big idiot. In later episodes, Edith stood up to him too. The man was a born loser who couldn't even start a business without forging his wife's name.

The true joke is that Carol O'Connor and Norma Lear were well aware that the show was supposed to be making fun of right-wing bigots. Some people watch the show, miss the whole point, and have more respect for a dumb fictional character than the very actor who played him.

White Trash? Archie owned his own home, went to work every day, didn't beat his wife and even supported his grown daughter and son-in-law. That's not my idea of white trash. Archie had many flaws, but so did the Meathead and Gloria, George, and most of the characters on the show. George was basically a black version of Archie, do you think he is black trash?

George barked at everyone within earshot, just as Archie did. They were equal in that department.

They both had issues with race. Archie with "them coloreds" and George with "that honkey".

George was very verbally abusive to his wife in All In The Family and in the early episodes of The Jeffersons.

Nah, she could stand up to him.

I agree. There was one thing that seperated Louise from Edith and that was Louise would stand up to George but Edith rarely stood up to Archie

Seemed to me the whole purpose of the Jeffersons at first was to make a complete fool out of the George character. I loved them on All in the Family but the Jeffersons show sucked. George was a jive turkey that all the characters made a fool out of It was a formula they always used until like Archie his character mellowed with age. The Jeffersons was one of those shows I never liked but watched. When I was a kid my family was all in tune with that CBS lineup.. Thank goodness we now live in a world where we don't have to pass off the Jeffersons or One Day at a Time as entertainment anymore.
