View Full Version : What's with this whole "punk/prep" thing?

Has anyone else noticed this among the teenagers today? My daughter tells me that people actually ask her if she's a punk or a prep, as if they even know what either of them mean. Why are people so stupid? Why do they like to lump themselves into groups? I shall never understand... I feel dumb now.

A prep is someone who judges people, tries to follow trends, cares what people think about them, etc. A punk is pretty much the opposite... someone who does their own thing, rebels against prep culture, does whatever they want. Alot of people think that preps are just people that keep up with the latest movies and music, wear the latest clothes etc but thats most likely because most preps are like that because they go with the flow, but if you just dress preppy and listen to pop music doesnt mean youre a prep. and some people think youre a punk if you wear hardcore clothes like the stuff from hot topic and torrid. really, someone can dress as hardcore as possible and still be a prep.

I think the way everyones always like "ughhh labels suck! who wants to be put into categorys?!?!?!" is overrated. who cares if someone labels you? i mean you dont have to like it but i just dont get it. unless they mean it as an insult, it shouldnt be a problem.

And the way people say "whats your definition of punk"/"whats your definition of prep" pisses me off. hello! the definition of punk and prep isnt someones opinion, its a fact.

And what i hate about it the most is usually when someones says theyre a punk, everyone else gets so judgmental. "What makes you a punk? do you think your punk because you shop at ot topic? do you think blink-182 and sum 41 are punk? blah blah blah" unless you really think that theyre a poseur, theres no need to give them a test about it. just let them be for crying out loud.

And for me, i havent decided what label fits me the best. alot of people at my school think im a goth and some people think im a punk but im not sure, im just a weirdo.

Actually, in Southern California, the whole punk vs. prep isn't around. We all co-exist in harmony.

Yeah, there's not really a punk vs. prep thing around here either.

I think it's a bunch of crap. But I guess us teenagers are so stupid that we have to put others into groups to keep track of them and know what kind of person they are. For myself...I got the attitude of a punk, and dress like a prep most of the time. I'm weird and junk, people just probably don't see me as that because I'm so shy and quiet in school they all think I'm a perfect little smart kid which really pisses me off because I'm not at all and I want people to know who I really am.

I'm right there with the two of you, I dress preppy and I'm sure that's what people classify me as but I'm anything but.

hm... I don't really label myself as a prep/punk. If you asked me what sort of person I was I would say im your class clown. I dress in your abercrombie/hollister preppy stuff but I do listen to punk music. Just cos I love abercrombie clothes & i like to keep up on my pop culture doesn't make me any less of "rebel" as a punk person. I probably shouldn't say something like this but its my opinion-I honestly think that people who are punkish-dress in all black anti-everything is just sort of an attention seeker.Like, I don't wanna fit in, so look at me, I'll hate everything. Just my take on it. I don't judge people and I don't label people. People label themselves. and as far as music & clothes go, I don't think music and clothes should make you who you are. I think thats dumb. I just think people love to give themselves the label of who they wanna be. I'm not saying thats who they are, but if its cool to be a "prep" they'll be a prep and if its cool to be a punk "they are punk" I can't stand the way punk people are like "im so punk because i listen to the cure and good charlotte" music doesn't make you. A few years ago you were listening to Hanson and Backstreet boys and Spice girls because thats what was popular, now you listen to Simple Plan and Linkin Park or Rob Zombie....so that "punk" style i don't really understand. I dunno. just my opinion.

Yeah, I definately agree with that...especially the whole punk attention seeker thing...like, I'm sure it's not all of them...who are the "true punks", but a lot of them do and you can definately tell. I think it's a little pathetic

yes exactly. I think they just wanna stand out and be that way. I'm not saying everyone has to be the same & be tready...but if you look at it, I think punk is very preppy. Its the a very popular thing to do, you're either punk or prep...so its not like you're escaping the preppy thing. My school is either preppy or ghetto. we do have our preps but another school thats close by that i did go to had all these punks or preps there. I think that you're either one or the other, but you're still preppy. if Punks try to escape the "popular thing" they can't.

One day I'll be wearing cute Gap clothes

The next I'll be full out Hot Topic

Punk/prep? I know not. However I don't go around calling myself a punk b/c I love Hot Topic and I love punk and metal bands...nor do I call myself a prep b/c I love Gap too and I'll GLADLY admit to loving my good ol Spice Girls cds.

If it came down to it I'd say I was a prep. Tho more of my cds are punk and I frequent at Hot Topic, I'm a good girl at heart. I watch the frikin Disney channel...my Barbies...are still in my closet.

The freshies coming into my high school next year tho...grr...they think just b/c they dress all Avril that their complete badasses. How bout...no.

That's absolutely untrue. I cant speak for everyone because there are alot of poseurs out there, but the real punks are not looking for attention. They dress different because they want to, not because 'look at me, im so punk!' If they just wear alot of stuff from hot topic it doesnt make them the least bit punk. Whether youre punk or not depends on how you think. If people dress like that to fit in and crap, theyre just preps. I do hate preps and pretty much everything and everyone else i know... and i wear probably wear the scariest makeup in my school and alot of studded jewlery, does that mean im looking for attention? no, its because i like dressing like that. just because some people dress different doesnt mean theyre attention whores.

That's poseurs, dear. real punks dont dont label themselves by the music they listen to.

Exactly! I walk around sometimes with eyeliner on that makes me look like I'm about to kill someone... sure, I get some weird stares, but ****. I honest of God couldn't care less... I dress like that because I want to, because that's how I feel.

I am....I dunno nor do I really care, but most people would consider me to be a prep because more of my clothes are from Abercrombie/Hollister, that who deal, but I just buy what I like and whats comfortable, doesnt really matter to me where its from, it just so happens that the places were I buy most of my clothes...although I wear sweatpants and hoodies a lot, so I just try and stay comfortable (anyways at 7 in the morning I could give a rat ass how I look...come on folks I just want to sleep) but if you care to know, I more of a jockish-prep because I like to wear jerseys and sweats...

exactly.. i get stared at in public because of my makeup, but even if i didnt i would wear it anyway because i like it. saying we're just looking for looking for attention is extremely judgmental and stereotypical. what, do we HAVE to be conformist preps? its a load of ****.

you say preps are sterotyped but i think punks are too. either way they are sterotyped. Same thing. I still like punks try to look that way for attention. Some people fingers at preps for trying to "be tready" but what about standing out. You either fit in or stand out.... Its still the same thing. Being punk is the "tready" thing, I'm sorry it is, if it wasn't then there would be like 2 punk people total, but there are alot, and therefore, its tready. And posers-real punks. its all sort of the same to me. I honestly think they are all in it for the same reasons. It just may be who you are. Youre not just sharing your opinion, youre judging everyone who is different than you and being stereotypical. If you suspect some people you know are just looking for attention thats fine but youre judging millions of people youve never met.

You think that all people who just simply dress different are just looking for attention? There probably are alot of people that do that, but some people just like different styles - it's the way they are, not the way theyre trying to be. What if the punk/goth style was among the majority of the world? Does that mean anyone who dressed preppy would be "looking for attention"? Do we all have to look the same? It's a load of crap what your saying. Some people, including me, like dressing different and we have the right to do so without being stereotyped and accused of "looking for attention."

"Tready" isnt a word, do you mean "trendy"? Yeah the punk look is trendy and just because you dress like a punk doesnt mean you are one- but anyone who tries to be a punk is a pure poseur and not punk at all; just a prep.

Say what you want, its my opinion. Trying to get attention isn't such a bad thing. I never said it was. Styles are styles. to me, that personal style looks like a cry for attention. My Opinion. I'm not forcing you to not be punk or whatever you label yourself. I just think people label themselves for what they wanna be, if you didn't there wouldn't be labels. Yes I meant trendy-its 12 am, sorry im a little off. Like I said, "people label themselves" wouldn't that make someone "trying" to look like prep or a punk so I guess that would make everyone a poser living in a great big poser world. and I dunno another thing I don't get about the whole sterotype thing is that, if your prep, your prep, you don't have to try too hard to be excepted as a prep and preps don't look at punks as bad people. I know I'm coming off like I'm judging them but I'm not. Saying they are looking for attention is not personally attacking them in the sense where "I HATE THEM" cos i don't not in the slightest. but my point is that- to be punk, you have to punk and if you're not a "real" punk, then your a "poser" funny in a way, cos punks sterotype themselves at eachother. I think punks tend to judge others more to see if they are prep or punk or poser or whatever. Who are they to judge whos true or not?

IMO 'punks' and 'preps' are the 2 biggest rivals, and its obvious that both go out of their way to look completely opposite from eachother. And preps only dress 'punky' when its the latest look. You walk into any Deb or look in a catalog of Delias, and you see all 'punky' dressing clothes because its the popular look now, and then when preppy people dress like that to be cool, punks get all pissy calling them posers. Which, I suppose is true.. dressing a certain way to look cool, but not associating with the people that truly like that look. Meh, I dunno.. Im out of school and glad I dont have to deal with this anymore.

It's stupid, everything about the "punk" label annoys me. Especially when I see people dressed in that stupid clothing, I've come across some punks/goths that just look like clowns.

I wouldn't consider myself either, I'm not preppy and I'm by no means punk. I don't listen to bubble gum pop music or punk music. I'm kind of just a nobody and listen to oldies. I really can't find any label to classify myself as, but that's a good thing.

You know what's even more annoying than punk? Emo scenesters.

Yes its your opinion that the punk look seems like its just for attention, but when you say that punks in general do it for attention, thats stereotypical. and just because people label themselves doesnt mean theyre poseurs... i mean if someone is naturally a true punk, why does saying "im a punk" make them a poseur?

I am nothing.

Some people would like to call me a poser cos I wear clothes from Hot Topic this year, while last year, I wore stuff from Aeropostale.

I'm definately not a punk. Okay, my ear is gaged only up to a 14, I listen only to Evanescence, and I basically only wear shirts from old TV shows. That's not what a punk is in my school.

In my school, a punk is someone who wears mounds of makeup, has 00 gage ears, long black jackets, studs and chains, bags with patches (which is something I have, but Tinkerbell isn't "punk"), things like that. No one in my school is actually punk. But they like to think they are, so we let them.

It's so stupid. I like being nothing.

Oh yes, the entire punk/prep thing. And let's not forget goth too.

Teenagers make me sick. First off, you have all of these "lost" and "sad" and "lonely" teenagers shopping at Hot Topic to buy clothing that expresses who they are. The entire Hot Topic thing pisses me off to no end. People who label themselves "punk" or "goth" will go to Hot Topic and buy clothes to prove that they are some lame ass label. Hot Topic is just a mainstream store for people who think they are "unique". I know so many teenagers who say, "Oh, I am so punk/goth. I shop at Hot Topic because I want to buy clothes that show my individuality!" Yeah, mmk. Go shop at some mainstream store that everyone else shops at and buy the same type of clothes they have to prove your individuality. It's ridiculous. I have loved the movie The Nightmare Before Christmas ever since I was a very small child. Well, now that Hot Topic is selling all of this Nightmare Before Christmas merchandise, all of these "punks" and "goths" are buying it and saying, "Ohh, I love The Nightmare Before Christmas!" Idiots. The only reason many of them like it is because Hot Topic sells merchandise featuring it. And oh yes, they all go to Hot Topic to get vinyl clothes to look all "cool" and "hip". Uh, why not go to a thrift store? You will find real vinyl clothing there jackass.

People can call themselves whatever they want. I don't really care. But it's ridiculous. Many "preps" and "punks" and "goths" all think they are different and unique, yet there are so many other people who are exactly like them. This is all a trend.

I choose not to label myself. Many people call me "goth" and I hate it. I am not "goth". I buy all of my clothing at discount stores because I am cheap. I love the color black because it goes with everything and it makes you look slim, and also because it's very simple yet classic and elegant at the same time. If I wanted to be "goth" I would sit at home in my bedroom writing horrible poetry and crying over how awful my life is, than I would go to Hot Topic the next day and buy some black clothing and makeup that is too light for my natural skin color, then I would go home and whine some more about how horrible my life is while I am decked out in my very expensive "original" Hot Topic clothing, than I would go out and run around declaring that I am unique while I am surrounded by loads of mindless idiots who look and dress and do all of the same things that I do because they are "unique" and "individual" too.

We should put all of these self-proclaimed "punks" and "preps" and "goths" in a room and let them all beat eachothers asses.

Yeah the whole label thing. It's a huge waste of time. Punk? Prep? Who the hell cares? Personally, I think the issue is more between punk/posers instead of punk/prep, or maybe that's just the way it is over here. Either way, it's stupid. Why do we have to name ourselves by what we wear or how we look anyways?

Well said. you are my god. You speak the truth. :happyface

The war isn't even about prep/punk. your punk because your anti prep cos you don't like trends-punk is just another trend. like i said. its a cry for attention.

I said the thing I hate is that at least with preps you don't see people walking around calling people posers but when your "punk" all they do is call eachother posers. Theres more labeling with punks than preps.

People say that preps care too much what people think-thats not true. I say Punks care alot more than preps because they "try" not to fit in and if you "try" to fit in your a "poser"

Exactly. None of it makes sense. "Punks" hate "preps" for following a trend. Well, "punk" is a trend.

I can't tell you how many times I have heard people at my school, walking around in their "punk rocker" t-shirts and baggy jeans with chains mind you, saying, "So-and-so is such a loser. They are a big poser." Okay, well then you are a poser too a$$hole. You are running around in your Hot Topic clothing and skateboarding and listening to your music, so if someone does the same as you, they are a poser too. You're a poser. He's a poser. She's a poser. Shut the hell up.

"Punks" claim not to care about what people think of them. Yeah, that's bull*****. They have this "punk" image that they have to keep up by wasting their money on expensive clothes from Hot Topic and acting tough and riding around on their skateboard. How about I take your skateboard and shove it up your ass, you p.r.i.c.k? You freaking social parasite. Get a job so you can buy a vehicle and use it as a way of transportation instead of riding around town on your skateboard.

I bet some replies in this thread have caused people to go write poems about how they just want to be accepted and type messages in their online blogs about how no one understands them.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go write a horrible song about how difficult my life is and then make idle suicide threats because no one understands me.

man i love you. you should write a book. These punks, man all they talk about is whos a poser, Johnny Depp is hot because hes "different" and Good Charlotte is awesome cos they dress in black-yada yada yada-notice how all the other punks say the same thing. I swear Punks are so much more alike than "preps" are only because punks follow the same trend in the same way-at least preps do their different thing.

Well said, Expyra!

As for me:

Why label? What point does it serve other than to exclude others from your own personal society?

Also, what are the requirements to be a "prep"? A "punk"? A "goth"? The only thing I notice is that teenagers get grouped by what kind of clothes they wear and what kind of music they listen to. Hello? What ever happened to trying to get along with everybody? Labels are not bringing kids together; they are drawing kids apart. ohno:

And that is the end of my little tirade. :cheer:

Yeah i hate how hot topic is a mainstream store. ive been shopping there for a long time and since avril came out, EVERYONE has been shopping there. the preps shop there because everyone else shops there. it's so annoying cause i hate how i look like everyone else now. this girl at my school whos kind of my friend called me one time and said 'do you think im punk or do you think im a poseur'? idiot. shes thinks shes the most hardcore punk because she has a spikey bracelet and puts safety pins in her oh-so-punk chuck taylors. thats what she ALWAYS calls them. "just a second, i need to put on my chuck taylors." "i cant find my other chuck taylor." "oh my god, my chuck taylors are dirty!" its like shes trying to flaunt the fact that she has toATlee pxnkY SH00z!!!!!!!!!!11111 she disgusts me. last year i had a friend who would occasionally dress up in all punk clothes for a day, just for fun. and the other girl copied her. some punk she is.

if anyone just does things like start liking the nightmare before christmas because hot topic is selling merchandise though, theyre not really punks, theyre conformists.

A prep is someone who tries to be cool, judges people by their clothes, conforms to all the lastest fashion and music, hates people that disagrees with them, etc. a punk is pretty much the opposite of that. its someone who rebels against prep culture and does what they want without caring what anyone thinks. im not really sure what a goth is... i guess its just along the lines of hating everything. and really, with that all said, i dont see why everyone has to have a freak attack when someone says theyre a punk. yes, ladies and gentlemen, there are real punks out there. i dont see why everyone hates labels either, i think theyre neat. i like being part of a group or a category. and thats all it is, its just falling into a category based on your beliefs etc. its no different than a personality trait. its not like all the punks, preps, goths, emos etc are separated and put into cages to live by themselves.

I can almost say I hate punks. Now I don't like hate them personally just everything they "believe" in. All they do is label themselves and try "not to fit in" Preps don't try to fit in. They go buy the clothes, they play sports and they're social & fun. Punks have to like get more accepted than preps do. Punk label is a joke. I honestly believe that there are few 'real' punks out there. Punk is like 1980s music. Theres no such thing as "true" punk today.

Yeah...why do all these "punks" go and dye their hair black, wear black clothes...all that crap, and then say they don't want attention? I'm not saying it's all of them, but God...DON'T tell me that that's not the case most of the time. They just think it's cool.

exactly what i have been saying this whole time. Its all for attention. They can't "fit in the trend" so they feel like they have to stand out. The reason they do this is because they feel like they are unique and different than "preps" because apparently us preps aren't unique. Punks aren't unique, they don't different. its just another trend, that they feel like they deserve attention or something, like "look at me I'm dark and evil stay away. I love Simple Plan and wear my eyeliner like Johnny Depp" Everyone is unique and different, just because you follow a trend such as "preps" doesn't make us any less creative and unique than goths or punks.

I don't really care either, but people have labeled me and classifed me as punk. I just act the same as I did before they labeled me, so I guess I'm punk. So I say I am. Whatever. God. Labels are so stupid. People feel that they have to classify themselves as either "punk" or "prep" to fit in somewhere. That's all my school consists of. Thats the main reason I hang out by myself a lot. Who cares. Once you get out of school these labels mean nothing, it's just middle school crap.

well look, you just labeled yourself in your sig..and just so you know, blink 182 are a pop band. thats not punk music.

If you think its stupid then why the hell do you label yourself a punk in your sugnature? what the hell? and the music you listen to and the people you hang out with dont determine how "punk" you are. its the way you think. btw blink 182 is far from punk. real punk bands are the casualties, devotchkas, the virus, etc.

About what I had in my sig, you obviously don't get it. Try going back and rereading my post. But, I'm not saying anymore about it. And know what? Blink182 is not a f***ing POP band. The whole prep thing actually comes from the prep schools where all the rich kids went. People who could afford nice clothes and all that started to be called preps and other people figured since they're rich, they're snobby...and that's where that came from. Punks were, I guess, the kids who couldn't buy nice clothes...the quiet ones who probably got picked on...so that's why they're classified as the people who are against everything prep. Then they just became trends and people say...well, a prep is this and a punk is that. I think it's so stupid people have to label other people. Someone who doesn't judge and excepts other people is just a person...not a "punk" and someone who judges people and picks on them is just...an ass, not a prep.

Merry Christmas :)

What are you, mentally challenged? Go back to elementary school and learn how to spell and use proper grammar.

My god, why the hell do people type like that? My sister used to be friends with this "misunderstood" punk wannabe girl who typed like this: "o yeh u r so freekin gr8 i lov u so dam much n u no it". People like that have a serious mental disorder that I like to call STUPID. Many people suffer from this illness and, unfortunately, we have to put up with their bulls.h.i.t. We are stuck trying to figure out what the hell they say because they are incapable of typing properly.

Asswads.

I love hot topic, i dont care if everyone says its a poseur store. i just really hate it how its become mainsteam. ive been shopping there for a long time and ive liked it since the beginning because i loved the stuff there and it was a place i could shop at to buy unique things. and since miss advil lavigne came out EVERYONE has been going there and im just not as unique anymore. everyone either is obsessed with how totally punky it is, or hates it because its for "posers." im not saying omggggg hot tpic iz so0o pxnky so dont say itz not! i just mean that you cant make judgements like that.
