Yes, that's right, a very unfunny episode about a statue being dedicated and Lucy having to pretend to be the statue after she breaks it, the dog licking her face was the best part. That's why most fans prefer the last Lucy Desi comedy hour instead, the one with Ernie Kovacks as that was the last time all the characters interplayed.

I'm actually quite fond of that episode! Not the best, but definately in my top 100. :)

It's number four on my least faves, after Drafted, Mertz and Kurtz, Ricky minds the baby and The Statue! LOL!

Ricky Minds the Baby? What's not to like about that one? I agree with your other 2 though.

Probably since Desi 'tries to be funny" he can't stand that?:D

No, it's not that, Desi was very funny many times on the show, even the writers learned though not to give him the whole show like they did with the bald one, their comments, not mine, i loved that one, thought Desi was excellent in it, but the minding the baby one i thought was just unfunny, and him telling a story in Spanish, what would be funny about that to a French Canadian kid anyway? LOL!

I happen to know several French Canadien kids who find that particular episode outrageously funny.

You should watch the episode of ER where Luka quotes Hamlet in Croatian. I don't speak a word of the language, but I've never heard a better rendition of the soliloquy. It ain't the language that counts, it's the way it's spoken!

I don't understand Ricky's Spanish either, but I'm happy to listen to him speaking it! ;)

I am an official Ricky rant translator; you can call me at 1-800- I-Understand-Ricky's-rants... but some things are better left untouched

Geez, totally agree with everything you said guys, i have nothing against Ricky telling his kid a story in Spanish, but the kid didn't understand Spanish and neither did I, so it was not one of my favorite eps, but i agree he did a great job, as always.

I wonder why they didn't raise their kid to be bilingual. I know I would. As much as anything else, it'd be so cool to be able to speak two languages!

I think that's odd too. You'd think Lucy would have learned more spanish too being married to him for 20 years.

I agree yet, according to Lucie Arnaz, in Real Life, Lucy didn't actually learn more than a few words and phrases of Spanish- nor did Desi take her (or the kids) to visit his hometown in Cuba even when it was feasible!

That's too bad that they never picked up the language; to me it's very important to raise my children bilingual. Desi never took them to see Santiago even when it was feasible mainly because of the Communism that made Desi leave the island in the first place. It's not very easy to come back to the place that you was forced to leave for political reasons:(

He seemed to enjoy it when he pretended to visit it on the show.

Wow, that is just spectacular!! LOL. Actually it's quite nice. I guess colorizing pictures doesn't bug me as much as shows. The colors are kind of fake though. :talk:

Well, Desi did return briefly (for a few hours in 1944)(which he detailed in 'A Book') while on a USO junket to visit his grandparents in Santiago ! It was supposed to be a private visit but word got out and the house got mobbed and he had to leave before he was able to spend any time with them. ..and sadly, this proved to be the last time he'd ever see them or Cuba!:crying:
Still, even though things stabilized from c. 1940 through 1958, he never attempted to take Lucy or their children on a visit during those safer times!
Yet, they had Ricky contemplating returning to Cuba in the 'Lucy Meets the Mustache' of 1960- a full year after Castro had taken over and abolished private landownership- yet, by that time things were so unpleasant between Desi and Lucy that neither they nor their castmates picked up on the preposterousness of it while filming their final hour-long episode

They had to leave unexpectedly because a tropical storm was on the way and it was dangerous to fly on that kind of weather. From 1940- 58 they probably were too busy with their bussiness and didn't even had time to think about it. Does that makes Desi a bad person for not taking his family to see where he was born? I guess I will put myself on that list because I'm also away from home and the chances that my children will ever get to see it are the same one as Desi's family had. There are a lot of ways to learn from your cultural background besides going back to where you came from whatever the reason may be. You carry your homeland in your heart and as Paul Rodriguez said :"Desi brought Cuba to America with him":)

I don't think Desi was bad for not taking them to Cuba but I think it was something that was simply too painful for him to deal with- and he didn't want to have to burden them with that pain! Good quote by Paul Rodrigo-though I haven't quite forgiven him for 'AKA Pablo' !

Now what kind of attitude is that?? Your kids are still little aren't they? You've got plenty of time to take them. :) You never know what can happen down the road.
