I have not used my FTP program since about....15 months ago and I have completey, and I mean completely, forgotten how to use it.

Can someone give me a refresher, PLEASE before I throw my computer through the wall?

I've got my domain information, etc but I can't remember how to even get my main page to show up.

Very VERY frustrated, HELP.

In case anyone needs to know I use CuteFTP.

I use CuteFTP also.

Click on File then Quck Connect. Then in url type in your ip address or domain name (like ftp.sitcomsonline.com), then type in your username and password and it should be on port 21.

To get your main page to show up you would need to upload an index.html or index.htm file.

I dont even have a "FILE" option at the top, the first one is FTP.

I have all my files showing in the left side of my screen, from my hard drive, and I transferred them over the right side but I maybe dont have it set up right yet? Like the connection wizard or something?

I have all the information my server sent me, the IP, etc, but I dont understand the FTP client thing or that stuff.

It's very frustrating because I had it before and could run it like I run anything. Now I can't remember squat.

It keeps saying

Connecting to ....com

Can't connect

Connecting to....com

Can't connect

Over and over and over.

Does that mean it can't find it?

When I try and load my index page (the index.html is already in the right side window, so it's there) I get redirected (with 100 pop ups) to a random search page.

I have missed something somewhere in the setup.

I'm so frustrated I could cry.

If it's not connecting, you might not have your information entered correctly or perhaps the server is down.

On the right side on the pull down bar right above where all the files are it just says www. and then nothing.

Somewhere I have not put in my server name but I dont know where to put it or what to put.

When I run that Site Wizard, where I have to put the information, I don't know what to put in the section where it asks my FTP Host Address or FTP Site User ID/Password. I have nothing entered in those.

Could that be the problem? I don't know what to put there.

Running the site wizard:

Enter a label - like "My Site"
The FTP address is either your ip address or domain name like ftp.sitcomsonline.com - do not use something like www.sitcomsonline.com - that won't work
Then enter your password and username

I'm sorry if I seem so dense. I did this once, I know I can do it again...I'm just really rusty.

The password/Username I enter is the one THEY sent me, right?

The FTP site I add would be ftp.mysite.com

Right?

Correct, I am assuming you have your own domain name and not a subdomain of another site.

Yes I have my own domain name.

It will not connect...it just keeps going and going when I try and do that Site Wizard.

But if I hit the "connect" button at the top it connects me, but it won't let me show any part of my site.

Does what I'm saying make any sense? I'm so incredibly frustrated right now I can't even stand myself

All of my files are transferred...they are all on the right (and left) side.

But above the files on the right (the FTP) side it just says www....there is nothing there. Shouldn't it be www.mysite.com?

Also

This is listed at the bottom of the email they sent me. What does this mean?

IMPORTANT!!!
Please change the DNS/Name Server Info of your domain to:
Domain servers in listed order:
ns1.serve80.com 64.numbers
ns2.serv80.com 64.changed

(I changed the numbers so they dont' show here, I dont know what they mean).

Who is your webhost, are you paying for is it on one of the free webservers? Sometimes they cancel inactive accounts and if you haven't logged in for 15 months maybe they deleted your account.

If you can actually connect, try clicking on the folder and maybe it will take you back to the main folder.

You should try downloading a second FTP client. Perhaps, WS_FTP LE (http://www.ispwitch.com) it's a lot easier than cuteftp.

Do you have to upload your files in something called "public_html" or some kind of folder? Some hosting services make you open a certain folder before you can upload a file. If you can't connect through the site wizard then obviously something isn't configured right in that.

There is probably something wrong with your account and domain name and not a ftp problem. You probably need to contact them concerning your domain name and it's status.

It's ICD Soft. It's paid for, the place having me do the website gave me the money for the payment so it's paid for, opened and the email from the company said it's ready to run.

All the files are there. Both sides. But I can't get the connection site thing to take.

GRRR.

When I click "Connect" at the top it gives me a box that i put in my information the place sent me.

Then I can connect.

But if I go through the site wizard, where I put i nthe ftp information, I cannot connect. I think that's why I can't get my pages to show up because there is no "connection" between the internet and where my FTP stuff is bu I can't get it to configure. :(

In the site wizard check the following:

Make sure Login type is Normal

Do not add anything to the Initial Remote Directory Box

It's already on Normal.

That's the one that lets me log in. When I click on Site Manager and try to do the wizard thing through there that's when it won't let me connect. That's where I can't enter my information right.

I know this can't be this difficult, it just can't be.

If your site used to work and now it's showing hundreds of popups it's probably not on your host's nameservers. Go to a site like http://www.register.com and type in your domain name and see if it matches your info as far as:

ns1.serve80.com 64.numbers
ns2.serv80.com 64.changed

On the left side, my Hard drive side, above the files is the white pull down box that has

C:\my files\webfile names

That's what is on my computer.

On the right side, the FTP part, in that white pull down box, shouldn't it say www.thisisyoursiteaddy.com ? It says www

that's it. There is nothign else there.

All of my files from my hard drive are there, I transferred them all. But there is nothing in that white box indicating where they are supposed to "go".

I used to have datapacket.net and they SUCKED. So I already had the domain name but I changed servers.

When I type in my home page, my index page, URL I get redirected to a generic search page

like if you type in www.glennquinn.com (which I did today) you get redirected to a generic site. That's what it is taking me to only my site is active and there .

AGH.

I don't know what else I can suggest, if you want to - you can private message me your info and I can try and login. If somebody else can't login, then you would know it's not a ftp issue.

Ok I was able to successfully login - I used quick connect with the ip address, username and password you sent.

In the /www/www folder there are a ton of files so I think you have 56k? It would probably take awhile for all of them to load.

I do see index.html and index.htm files in there.

When I typed in your url in my browser, I got a search the web page.

The domain servers don't match the ones you posted though, they are listed as: ns5.aczl.com ns6.aczl.com ns7.aczl.com ns8.aczl.com

So you probably need to either update the domain info yourself or have your webhost update them to the new servers you posted. Then it would take 24-72 hours for the domain to propogate and it would be viewable on the web.

It looks somebody else may have registered your domain and now they are using it as a search page. I think the address that has the domain registered now is not yours or the company which originally registered it. When domains expire, companies purchase them and then they put on these search pages to make money off the traffic.

So what do I do about that? I thought once a domain was registered it was always yours.

I dont get how that could be (registering my domain name). It's very specific about 1 very specific thing and not somethign in general that people would be using in day to day convo. I can't imagine someone else wanting that domain name.

TJ
01-04-2004, 01:35 AM
Even if you were able to login into ftp, these files would not be viewable on the web.

Domains are usually registered for a year and then they expire. You have to renew every year.

At this point, I don't know what else you can do since you don't own the domain name. You might contact the company that owns it and ask them if you could buy it back.

TJ
01-04-2004, 01:38 AM
I don't know if you are familiar with the mortystv.com site, but he forgot to renew askmorty.com and another company that uses it for search pages registered it and he lost it. I don't think they would sell it back to him and if they did it was way too expensive.

I can't do that. I dont have the money for that. I can just change the other one to a differnt one I suppose but I have to contact the ICD Soft place first.

Well good luck with things, I don't know why these companies just register any common domain names when they expire but they do. It's pretty hard to get a domain back once somebody else registers it unless you own the trademark to it.

Tha'ts just not a common thing that anyone would regisster, so I dont know why they woudl do that.

I emailed the support for the website company and man are they fast. 4 minutes to respond.

They said I needed to use server 280 as my FTP login? Whatever that means? Did you tell me that? I'm so confused.

So I emailed them back to ask about the server/domain thing and I'm waiting to see wht they say.

I have a lot of work on this site to do before a certan date so I hope to heck I can get things settled.

Thanks for your help.

I registered a new name for $10. They said I could email the place I bought the domain from in the first place and have them redo the DNS stuff but it would be just as easy o get a new domain. I have to wait 24/48 hours for it to "take" and then I have to do all the FTP configuration crap AGAIN.

The customer service at this server I bought is amazing. I've never dealt anywhere online with anyone like them.

They are all probably having a hoot and laugh with me but they are wonderful.

Hoping to have my website running by midweek...
