http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?COAS2784&1 I agree, Spyware Stinks big time.
I went nearly 4 years with only one Peice of Spyware and in a matter of 30 days im infected with 15 different ones. Most of them i cant even get rid of, im working on it but it takes time, even with SpyBot SD and Ad-Aware.

It seems to be hitting everyone lately, More than it ever has.
dandelion wine 12-28-2003, 04:48 AM I'm glad you brought this petition up, because even though I've been using Spybot (which is great), there's no way of getting around spyware entirely. I can run a scan every day and I'll still find 70 problems. Hopefully it'll get their attention and end it once and for all.
PZelda 12-28-2003, 05:19 AM Here's a great place robyrob told me about in the past...
You need to first download HijackThis (there should be a link at that page for you to download it). It logs all the programs you're running at the time...when you do so, that will help the people there fix your spyware problems. HT and SpywareInfo have both saved my ass many times.
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showforum=11
The people there are really helpful and will assist you in getting rid of nasty spyware that can't be removed.
As for that petition, I signed it. I'll pass it around at the other boards I visit. Thanks again :D
The Modfather 12-28-2003, 09:52 AM May be a dumb question but what is Spyware?

May be a dumb question but what is Spyware? Yeah, I was wondering the same thing. And how do you detect it/get rid of it?
pandora_spocks 12-28-2003, 11:23 AM - never mind. problem resolved. -

May be a dumb question but what is Spyware? from www.spychecker.com :
"Spyware is Internet jargon for Advertising Supported software (Adware). It is a way for shareware authors to make money from a product, other than by selling it to the users. There are several large media companies that offer them to place banner ads in their products in exchange for a portion of the revenue from banner sales. This way, you don't have to pay for the software and the developers are still getting paid. If you find the banners annoying, there is usually an option to remove them, by paying the regular licensing fee."
...but it can also come in the form of home page/ search engine hijackers, pop-up servers (coming from your pc), "web bugs", "tracking cookies", trojans, key loggers, hidden progs that take screenshots, email logging, chat logging and just about everything else
generally it is installed without your knowledge or consent and resists any attempts to uninstall or remove it
http://cexx.org/problem.htm has some info about WHY this is a problem, and some other great sites are www.grc.com and http://www.spywareinfo.com

Nanny Fine 12-28-2003, 02:08 PM I HATE Spyware. In the last 4 days I've been hit with it abut 12 times. I've run my Ad Aware over and over and even if I just run it, spend a half a day online and then run it again I have MORE problems.
I tried to get to one of the sites RobyRob suggested to me the other day but I can't get it to work. I think it was for Spybot? I have Adaware but it's apparently not enough.
I'm signing the petition.

just AdAware is definately not enough, i would suggest using a "hosts" file, using Spybot's "Immunize" feature, using AdAware AND Spybot regularily, use a Firewall and keep your Antivirus UP-TO-DATE, you can also check out this guide:
http://forums.net-integration.net/index.php?showtopic=3051
oh and Spybot S&D's home is http://www.safer-networking.org/
you can download it here:

Nanny Fine 12-28-2003, 02:20 PM I have a Firewall, Zone Alarm.
What is a Hosts file and an Immunize Feature?

What is a Hosts file and an Immunize Feature? a hosts file is like a "directory" listing of IP addresses that correspond to specific websites. how it works is, if you have it on your pc, your web browser will check the hosts file first to see if it can find the IP address for *www.nastysite.com*, so if you point that address to a blank page, your browser wont be able to load it, thereby keeping the nasties away from you.
Spybot has an option to add their hosts file:
open Spybot in "advanced mode" (it should have a shortcut on the startmenu once it is installed)
click on the "Tools" button on the Navbar on the left
the 6th item under Tools is Hosts file click on that
click on the "Add Spybot-S&D hosts list"
it may take a while to add ALL of those sites (there ARE a lot of them - and the list grows daily)
click on the Spybot S&D button at the top of the Navbar on the left
click on the "Immunize" button
click on the "Immunize" button in the right pane (i'll explain what it does in a moment
click on the "Install" to install the bad dowload blocker for Internet Explorer
at the bottom of the page, you may want to select any of the options under "Recommended miscellaneous protections" - I usually just lock the Hosts file, but you can also lock your Home page - just don't forget that you've locked it if you have trouble changing it in the future
what the "Immunize" feature does is it prevents bad Active X components from installing - basically Active X is a way to run programs or plugins within Internet Explorer, and if you dont control it, it could potentially allow a web page to install these programs just by opening the web page
disturbed child 12-28-2003, 03:41 PM Spyware is awful. I never knew what it was or that it even existed until a few weeks ago. I was visiting a Buffy website, looking at pictures, when I started getting all of these popups telling me that I had Spyware on my computer. I kept getting this one window that was big and gray and it took up my entire screen and I couldn't close it. When I finally managed to get rid of it, another came up. Then I got another message saying, "You have Spyware on your computer. Your CD drive will open at any second." And sure enough my CD drive popped open. Also, I think it has gotten in and done something to my AOL Insant Messenger. I will put things in my profile and I will have my profile saved, than the next time I sign on I look at my profile and all of my stuff is gone and replaced with this garbage that says, "Want to see <so and so's> photos? Click here!" That has happened to me several times and I'm not sure if it's Spyware or not but I think it is.
I never had it before, and then a few weeks ago it just started coming at me left and right and screwing up my computer. I am fed up with it and I have to find a way to get rid of it. The popups and stuff stopped a few days ago and I haven't gotten any since, so I'm not sure if the Spyware is still on my computer. I'm sure it is.
Moonlight Lady 12-28-2003, 06:46 PM I hate Spyware! I signed the petition too.

Stormtracker TF 01-08-2004, 04:04 AM Bump. This needs all the exposure it can get.
Hollow 01-08-2004, 11:09 AM a little while ago my computer got a virus from kazaa and ALL the data on it had to be erased. probably from spyware. and spyware needs to DIEEEEEEEEE.
Penny Lane 01-08-2004, 01:17 PM I signed! Hope this goes through! I really had trouble with spyware after I downloaded Hotbar. Ihave disabled it but I still get a lot of crap in my email. But it has been reduced since I disabled hotbar. I puchased a spyware program and I scan everyday and there is always a bunch of new ones! But it wipes them out.
Also, question................Is it spyware that is making my windows XP freeze up all the time? I run my virus scan and no virus shows up so I am assuming that my problems are caused by that blasted spyware! Am I right?

Spyware can Majorly slow down your Computer due to being Poorly written (And if you have alot, can all be open at the same time running in the Background, using up alot of RAM).
I suggest you get Spybot or Adaware too, even if you have already have Spyware Removal tool, sometimes its good to have more than one to make sure you get the stuff the others might miss.
If you get the Root of the Problem, youll probably be able to stop the Flow of Spyware thats being downloaded, because depending on what Type of Spyware you have or may be Missing, it can Download many others very fast without your knowlege. Over a Month i got 21 Totally Different Spywares on my computer, and until i got completely rid of the Root of the Problem (Active Deliver/Apropos and Look2Me, a VX2/h.ABetterInternet Variant), I was being Bombarded with Spyware, After i got rid of those, The Constant Silent downloads of all that Malware stopped.
David 01-08-2004, 06:05 PM My uncle just fixed my computer wit SpyBot, so my computer is all healthy now. I hated having spyware!
