Boxing day sure is an appropriate name, you box the OTHER customers in all the stores hoping to score some bargains! They hire guards,a nd some people wait for hours in line to get something half off or better, some things are unbelievable but there are so few of them that people push and shove their way to bargains, as depicted many times on Lucy shows over the years. LOL!

There were stories on the news about people being in queues from 3am on Boxing Day morning for the sales! What's wrong with these people?! What can be worth that?! I made it into the HMV sale today (CDs and DVDs, so it was worth having a look!) but I got out pretty damn quick. Half the population of Southern England appeared to be congregated around the paying counter, and the other half were elbowing each other around the aisles! Insane.

So why do they call it boxing day?

Mickey

Because they used to open the alms boxes in the churches on the day after Christmas.

Alms? I heard in the old days, rich people used to give money and gifts to their workers the day after Christmas, any truth to that?

Almost certainly. Landowners and gentry and such like would have given things to their servants I'd assume. Boxing Day probably then became a holiday because the servants would have had to work on Christmas Day to serve the meals and so forth, so they'd have had Boxing Day off whilst the family was recovering ;). Combine the two things and you've got a fairly important day on the calendar, I guess.

Yes Mickey, thank you, here in Canada, it's just a day to get bargains in stores with huge mobs and all, certainly not a way to recuperate after Christmas.
