View Full Version : A Christmas Story
TheHappyBurgerMeister 12-23-2003, 10:37 PM I absolutely LOVE this movie. I know this has been talked about before, but that's not really my point. Well, I've always wondered what Peter Billingsley (Ralphie) looks like now and I never knew..... until this morning. In the newspaper there was a little article from associated press about the 20 anniversary DVD. It had a picture of him in front of a poster of the movie taken yesterday at some party. My first impression when I saw his picture now is- He' HOT!! :D I was TOTALLY shocked! First it didn't really look like him, but then I could see his eyes were exactly the same as when he was little. He has the most blue eyes I've ever seen in my life. If you want to see what he looks like now tomorrow night inbetween the 24 hours of the movie on TNT they will have him and the other stars talking about it. :)
Cactus Jack 12-23-2003, 10:43 PM I LOVE this movie!!!!!!!!! Its my 2nd fav Christmas movie , 1st is Christmas Vacation, I love this movie
Oh fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuudge
YOull shoot your eye out!
TheHappyBurgerMeister 12-23-2003, 10:48 PM Oh, look I found a picture! It's from the 20th anniversary party on December 5th. Peter Billingsley doesn't look very good in this picture, but I think that Schwartz and Scut Farcus are pretty good looking (OMG, did I just say Scut Farcus is good looking?!)
L-R: R.D. Robb (Schwartz), Ian Petrella (Randy- does not look like him at all!!), Peter Billingsley(Ralphie), Bob Clark (director), Scott Schwartz (Flick) Zack Ward(Scut Farcus)

 Scut is lookin' real good these days, and Peter Billingsley is handsome! Thanks for sharing this picture of them.
phoebe7165 12-23-2003, 11:04 PM Hey, TheHappyBurgerMeister, I totally agree with you, I love this movie, too. When TBS shows 24 hours of it on Christmas Eve, we'll be watching something else, and at commercial turn on TBS, see what part is showing. We recite lines, I say "Frag-il-lay" instead of 'Fragile', oh, Fudge, etc. One of my neighbor's has dogs that remind me of the Bumpus' dogs, and everytime I hear them bark, I keep thinking "Sons of bitches, Bumpus'"!!
There was an article in TV Guide last Christmas about what the cast was doing these days. The kid who played Flik started hanging out with people in the adult film industry, and got involved a little with porn, at first, just being a background player, then somebody decided to make him a star of his own porn movie. Because of this, he's now finding it hard to get parts in mainstream acting. I didn't read that in TV Guide. There was an E! True Hollywood Story on him.
Darrin McGavin(the old man) is getting up there in age and hasn't been doing too well health-wise lately.
The last thing I really remember seeing Melinda Dillon(Mother)in was "Magnolia" a few years back. I can remember first seeing her in "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" way before I started watching a Christmas Story. In fact, in that TV Guide article, she was saying that at first her agent told her not to take the role of the mother because it would hurt her career. Funny how things worked out now.
Yes, I also, agree that Peter Billingsley still has those big blue eyes. His hair's a bit dark, more of a dirty blond. I'd like to see what the kid who played Randy looks like now, because he was so cute as a kid.
By the way, I get quite a few catalogs in the mail, and this year, some of them have started selling a replica of the leg lamp(the old man's MAJOR AWARD) for $49.99.
phoebe7165 12-23-2003, 11:07 PM Oops, put my post in before I saw the current cast photo. I also forgot that Zack Ward was on "Titus".
The Modfather 12-24-2003, 09:12 AM I love this movie! My favorite Christmas movie. I'm watching it today

I'm watching it right now. Well, more like listening to it while I'm doing other things. And reciting the lines, as usual. Geez, I'm so sad!
I like how they got some of the cast members to talk about the movie. R.D. Robb, the one who played Schwartz, said that to this day, people come up to him and say "You're the 'triple-dog-dare-you' guy"!

Hey, actually he is in the picture. He's the one wearing the black glasses and black suit and tie. It does not look like him at all! Maybe if he didn't have the glasses on it would look more like him.
There was an E! True Hollywood Story on Scott Schwartz (Flick)? I never knew about that one. I would love to see that show.
TheHappyBurgerMeister 12-24-2003, 11:31 PM A few years ago there was a movie called "My Summer Story" or AKA "It Runs in the Family" (not the Douglas' movie from this summer). Well, it was like a new version of A Christmas Story. Kieran Culkin was Raphie, Christian Culkin was Randy, Charles Grodin was the old man, and I believe Mary Steenburgen was the mother. It wasn't as good as A Christmas story, but it was alright. Pretty much the same, it just took place in the summer time. Here's the page for it at IMDB:
http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0110168/
phoebe7165 12-24-2003, 11:41 PM It's really hard for me to warm up to a remake of any movie that I love so much, and I don't think I'd be able to watch this one, especially without comparing it to the original. It's like when "Miracle on 34th Street" keeps being remade. I think there's about 3 remakes, but none of them compare to the Maureen O'Hara version. This isn't Christmas related, but this weekend, TNT is going to broadcast "The Goodbye Girl" with Patricia Heaton & Jeff Daniels, both actors in which I like, but I love the original with Richard Dreyfuss & Marsha Mason. I still might watch it but I know I'd still like the original much, much better.
Nobody better even think about remaking "It's a Wonderful Life"!!
TheHappyBurgerMeister 12-25-2003, 12:53 AM You can go to TNT and take A Christmas Story quiz. I did pretty good, except for one question according to TNT Melinda Dillon also played the mother in E.T. which is TOTALLY false! I can't think of the actresses name in ET, but I guess she looks a little like Melinda Dillon. I can't believe TNT said that.

I can't believe TNT would say that, either. The mother in E.T. was played by Dee Wallace. Now she goes by Dee Wallace-Stone. When Universal Studios first opened here in Orlando, a bunch of celebrities showed up to represent the different attractions. Well, Dee Wallace & Henry Thomas(who played Elliot) were there reprsenting the E.T. ride and they did a Q&A, and then met with the crowd and Dee was S-O-O-O nice!! I'm going to take that quiz, too. I'll be back to tell you how I did.

On the quiz one question I was confused about is what company soda company sponsored or gave the leg lamp to the family. It said that it wasn't said, but it was obvious! Huh?! I still don't get it and I've seen the movie 6 million times. Where is a reference to a soda company when they get the lef lamp?

Jack1000 12-30-2003, 02:45 PM Wow!!!! Great picture of the cast of one of my favorite movies of all time!!!!! I always called the bully in the movie Scott Farcus, as did everyone else! (I didn't know for a long time that it was actually spelled differently LOL!)
Wonder what happend to Grover Dill and the KID WITH GOGGLES!!! LOL!!!
" I like the Wizard of Oz......I like the Tin Man!"
I have the original DVD of this movie and have heard the 20th Anniversery Edition is SO MUCH BETTER!!!
**********************
OK a question:
In the end, when the family goes to the Chinese Restrauent the waitstaff brings out what looks like a duck! Darrin MaGavin's line...
"Yes it's a beautiful duck! But you see it's smiling at me!"
Then the waiter chops the head off!
But why would Jean Sheppard's narration say, "That Christmas would live in our memories, as the Christmas when we were first introduced to Chinese Turkey?"
To me, it looks like a duck! What do you think it is?

Yes it's a duck.Because their turkey was ruined, they had to make do with whatever they could find open on Christmas Day which was a Chinese restaurant. Hence a little joke.........Chinese turkey.
Dude111 12-18-2025, 09:49 PM Since I got it recorded off Analogue cable,I guess ill watch it this year..
I always though Ralphee was wierd!!!
James28 12-24-2025, 07:56 PM I refuse to watch A Christmas Story because I'm just going to complain about it retaining its old uppercase-only NCI closed-captioning again (like a majority of the pre-1986 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer titles owned by Warner Bros. right now). I wish its CC weren't also like that on its SVoD airings, either (meaning WB should've already converted to lowercase right now). Bad distributor.:angryfire

Why does the size of closed-captioning matter? Do you have to have it on?
Dude111 12-25-2025, 01:33 AM Ill turn on CC when I watch the one I have on VHS and see if its all uppercase.....
I think its easier to read if its all one case to be honest! (I usually have captions disabled)

Dude111 12-25-2025, 05:52 AM I just watched CHRISTMAS STORY and the one I have does not have any captions!!
I had Closed Captions enabled for almost the whole movie and nothing... It was recorded from channel 23 (WXXA) which I read was a FOX network in the 80s..
I dont know if they were showing this or FOX was.. I would imagine they were because if FOX was,it would most likely have the captions.. (They didnt record any commericals which would maybe have let me see when exactly it was recorded)
I think this was recorded in 1985 as there is a 1985 movie before it (The color purple) I dont know what channel that came from... (That 1 has captions)
James28 12-26-2025, 02:36 AM Why does the size of closed-captioning matter? Do you have to have it on?
Even if I said "no" to a reply like this, it's clear that no distributor is going to have their programs' closed-captioning be only in uppercase anymore, even the CC for their classic/legacy shows. Universal and Sony Pictures for the most part have all but wiped out most of the old all-capital CC for their classic/legacy theatrical-film library, and Warner Bros. has fallen way behind all the other studios in doing the same. That is what makes Warner Bros.'s distribution department untrustworthy compared to Universal and Sony.
It's either already have a classic film's closed-captioning be in lowercase or mixed-case, or I will not be watching that classic film at all until its CC does get converted to lowercase for real.
Dude111 12-26-2025, 02:46 AM Maybe you can watch it with them OFF buddy (I dunno, maybe you cant hear it well)
Do you have it on DVD?
I dont understand why a new release (DVD) would use all caps?

That is not going to cut it, I want a lettercase conversion.
I don't need to care what JamesG says or asks or tells me. I don't need to keep being asked why stuff matters, because at this point, it's beyond caring. Warner Bros. needs to stop preserving old uppercase-only NCI closed-captioning on their classic/legacy theatrical films, especially on their SVoD showings. An old program's closed-captioning needs to have the spoken dialogue rendered ONLY in lowercase. Bottom line.

As the moderator here, you do have to care somewhat for what I have to say. You are the one who keeps bringing up this upper/lowercase closed-captioning topic.
Since it seems to be such an important issue for you, why does it matter what size the closed-captioning is? Since you don't seem to "need" closed-captioning, what difference does it make? You keep bringing it up so expect to answer some questions.
Dude111 12-27-2025, 03:41 AM I wonder if he has a hard time hearing things Jimmy and he is afraid to tell us??

Not when I'm asked (or maybe forced) to do so by the wrong people, especially those who want to target/hound me and make a beeline for everything I say, and overuse the word "seems" (which looks like a trigger word or automatically incites agitation).
Look, not everyone who uses closed-captioning is deaf or hard of hearing (which I never really was). But if it's just one major Hollywood studio out of five who refuses to convert the closed-captioning for its classic-film library when everyone else has already done so for theirs, that one studio will get some criticism over this. It doesn't help that A Christmas Story was never shown on Tubi. All I want is for the closed-captioning for A Christmas Story to only be in lowercase, especially its spoken dialogue.

You willingly came to where I moderate and brought up the closed captioning issue again. It’s a public forum so anyone can be expected to receive feedback, questions or criticism for what they post. Asking questions does not mean hounding or targeting.
At the end of the day you watch whatever and however you want.
James28 12-28-2025, 04:16 AM ^^Sorry, but unnecessarily, relentlessly, and repeatedly asking other people "why stuff matters" does mean hounding and targeting, which is what you insist on doing to me, and it needs to stop, for real. I've never seen you relentlessly hounding other members on issues they're passionate about.
You are not going to change my mind regarding scripted shows' closed-captioning not needing to be in uppercase anymore because of advances in technology (like, for example, CC vendors moving away from the early CC decoders that did not allow for the use of lowercase characters), and I'm not going to get in trouble about this, either. Let me stand firm on this without you replying at all, please, because all you want to do is target and hound and stop me from supporting future letter-case conversions of WB-owned movies' closed-captioning.
We need to have a different moderator regarding the CC-letter-case issue, JamesG doesn't need to be the only one.
Dude111 12-28-2025, 10:55 AM He is trying to understand Jimmy,he isnt trying to upset you.....
Can you please tell us why you like to see the text if you can hear it ok??
Do you like to see if it says something that isnt audible? (I have seen that once or twice, you see a word that isnt spoken but its there in the caption like they forgot to remove it)

Also, you have no say in who can/can’t reply to you. If this is such a passionate issue with you then you should be able to explain why.

No. No, you're trying to change my mind by stopping me from pushing for future closed-captioning conversions on the Warner-Bros.-distributed films who are still stuck with their obsolete all-capital NCI/VITAC captions. Plus, I will have a say in who can and can't reply to me on this forum if their tone sounds mean and overpowering. I'm not going to be forced to explain why if I don't have or need to or feel like it. Don't bother asking how, please.
All I want is for the spoken dialogue in the closed captioning for A Christmas Story to only be in lowercase, whether on linear TV or on SVoD. And judging by Warner Bros.'s neglect to do such a conversion, it sounds like that's too much to ask. The National Captioning Institute and the all-capital style it uses can go straight to hell.

It's stubborn film-distribution departments like that of Warner Bros. continuing to stick certain popular films with obsolete capital-only closed-captioning (specifically spoken dialogue and non-speech elements are capitalized) on the SVoD showings for those films. (Lionsgate is that same way, too, with its pre-2012 film library.) I can imagine your response to this being, "Oh, it's the studio's classic/legacy library, the studio can do all it wants with their classic library, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.". Well, if that studio actually were "doing what it wants", why couldn't it have just gone ahead and redone their popular films' CC into lowercase and gotten rid of the previous all-capital versions anyway just like every other studio has already done?
Nope, you don't have the authority to request that of anyone. Especially over here where I moderate.

I will definitely request that of you, alright, since all you want me to do is drag me into fights when I don't need a fight. Others don't. Let somebody else moderate, because I'm sick of your behavior towards me right now.

Well yeah, the studios have the right to do what they want with their catalog. For whatever reason, WB doesn't find it necessary to change their closed-captioning. Make all the posts you want, yell it from the rooftops, it won't change anything.

James28 12-29-2025, 04:56 PM Well yeah, the studios have the right to do what they want with their catalog. For whatever reason, WB doesn't find it necessary to change their closed-captioning. Make all the posts you want, yell it from the rooftops, it won't change anything.
Warner Bros. has been slow to convert their classic-film library closed-captioning to lowercase compared to the other major studios. Shame on their distribution department for being so cheap (and Lionsgate's too). The closed-captioning lettercase on A Christmas Story WILL be in lowercase on SVoD sooner or later. It's going to happen for real.
All I did was ask for your reasoning. You are the one blowing up.
Maybe I wouldn't blow up if you didn't sound mean and deadlock-y compared to other moderators, including TJ. You can just go to hell for that behavior. I ain't succumbing to this no more.
Dude111 12-29-2025, 05:52 PM Please dont talk to him like that Jimmy.... You kinda started on him..... He responded as anyone would be who was being attacked so to speak.....
JamesG 12-30-2025, 01:42 AM Maybe if you twinkle your toes and tap your feet together the closed captioning fairy will come and change it for you.
What do you do if family or friends want to watch it? Do you cover your eyes and go “I won’t watch it!”
James28 12-31-2025, 03:46 AM I highly doubt A Christmas Story will ever be available on a free SVoD service like Tubi. Right now, Warner Bros. just needs to get its act together and convert the CC lettercase of more of the best pre-1986 MGM titles for those who continue to lack lowercase CC right now.
The most prominent WB-distributed MGM title still lacking lowercase CC on its Tubi showings is Ben-Hur (the 1959 version). Logan's Run is another. These are definitely the most galling cases.
Dude111 12-31-2025, 09:39 AM Im happy with the copy I have from Channel 23 -- It doesnt have any captions..
Jimmy Im trying to understand buddy, why do you like to see them?

Most closed-captioning vendors over the past decade just aren't going to perform any new CC tracks in uppercase (specifically its dialogue) anymore unless it's sports, news, or a live event. It has to be in lowercase whether it's for a new program or an update of an old program's CC. I've been checking what CC style particular movies (regardless of studio/distributor) use with the volume turned off. I'm just trying to be considerate for when I may go deaf in the future.
Dude111 12-31-2025, 06:40 PM Ahhhhhhh ok buddy :)
I understand now and Jimmy probably does also..... We werent trying to give you a hard time!!
