No They Shouldnt, They used to be A Big deal to me but not anymore. Makes people sometimes think their better than others because they have more posts. Probably better off without them.

I lean towards yes they should be here, because I like to keep up with how many I have.

It doesn't matter to me, people are going to make a fuss either way. If it's not there people are going to whine and if it's there people are going to whine.

I vote no because it causes problems with members trying to raise their post count.

If it's disabled, I would like a way to check my own count every once in a while, out of curiousity.

TJ
12-08-2003, 06:46 PM
They would still be tracked and viewable in your profile even if they wouldn't display under your posts.

Yes. But it isn't that big of a deal. I just like to know how many i have

You could search your Old Posts in your profile. It will tell you how many you have made.

I can agree with that last part. Maybe not a public display but a private display where only that person can see how many posts they have, I don't care how many other people have.

they should be replaced with something else like whether youre online or offline.

but if anyone posts another topic asking where they are, delete it before i see it or i'll slaughter whoever posted it.

Oops, I accidently erased the name of the poster!
Anyway, It doesn't matter to me if the # of posts are displayed or not, but I'm going to vote yes. I agree with the above post though. If you do get rid of them at least let ME check once in awhile.
God Bless! :)

I'm going to say no. I'm all about quality, not quantity. Too many people here are posting silly stuff just to see their post total raise ("the counting game," anyone?). Perhaps if the post totals are disabled, people will stop posting useless things for the sole purpose of raising their amount of posts.

No they shouldn't. Put something like Sarah suggested, a feature that tells whether you are online or offline. I also like Holly's idea adding a mood feature. But please get rid of the post counts, members make too big a deal about them.

Because people post incredible lame posts which sometimes include no words or are in no way relevent to the topic of the thread.

I don't know if not displaying them under your username will stop people from trying to raise their post total, they can easily look at their profile. I don't think it really makes a difference. I voted yes... I'm used to seeing them there, and it seemed weird when they were gone.

I vote no because of the quantity/quality thing and the fussin' and fightin' thing.

Besides that though, I don't notice my post total very often, so when I do it gives me a fright. It's like waking up to a living room full of empty beer cans and wondering how the heck I drank that many beers.

Well if we wouldn't post "10" 840 times, then there might not be a problem and this decision would not have to be made.

And obviously, if the post totals are out in the open for everyone to see, it is our business. If it weren't, everyone's post totals would be private.

Technically, it is our business. us non-post-total-crazed want to visit these boards and be able to talk. when people post a bunch of bullcrap to raise a ****ing post total that wont affect anything in any way, shape or form, not only does it take up space, but it costs money for tj. and really, do you have any idea how much it bothers us? this is our board too, and you WILL SURVIVE without having alot of posts.

I voted yes, only because I remember when they were taken away last time. I didn't like it at all. I can't tell you why exactly, but it just didn't feel right. I like to see my post count, too, and I know I can check my profile for that, but...I don't know...I like having it right in front of me! (Wow...I sound really lazy!)

I think the people who are trying to raise their post count will do it no matter what, so taking the feature away probably won't help much.

BTW: What's the "Mood Feature"?

Actually, my friends on here and I do that. We don't say "I'm so cool" We just say hey, I got [-insert # here-] and they'll say congrats and it'll be done with. No big deal, just saying we go to a certain amount. Who cares? No one's allowed to post at chit-chat if they've reached a certain amount anymore so it shouldn't really bother anyone anymore. No one's posted a thread saying 1234, 1235, 1236 in a long time...

Yeah.. but that doesn't mean people who tend to post a lot should get a hard time about it. Just because you have a high post total doesn't mean your always trying to raise your post amount... it might just mean that you talk a lot on SO. Some of these posts are saying that people who have high post totals are only here trying to top everyone else... thats not true in all cases. People should stop accusing people of this... it'll just start fights.

I'm sure I'm one of the "other" people you were talking about because I said something about Allison. Frankly, I couldn't care less. I said in the other thread I was editing out the top 50 posters thing, doesn't anyone bother to reading any other threads before they jump to conclusions?

As far as changing my mind alot, yeah I guess you could say that.. but unless you try something out first, how would you know how things would work?

As far as the post count goes... Personally, I think that it is a useless feature. It means nothing, especially since some posters go way out of their way to post nothing replies for the sole purpose of raising their post count. Why? It's not like you get a prize when you reach a certain number.

The members list... It's slightly interesting, but not necessary. But, yeah, it is kind of nice to have.

But you know, TJ, do what is best for you and your site. If a certain feature creates problems of some kind, then do away with the feature.

And mind changing? Ah, come on folks! We all change our minds from time to time. Why shouldn't TJ be allowed to do so as well?

I dont care if they stay or go. Post counts arent everything, Its Quality over Quantity. Infact, it would probably be better to just get rid of them so its not like some big game to see how many posts you can get.

no, he didn't. he closed it, but he didn't get rid of it. what he should do is just delete it, along with the other random board that we all knowingly love so much. I could care less if I lost posts. if no one really cared about post total, then they'd have no problem with TJ deleting the random boards. that's the real test to see if you care about padding up or post toal or not. there's always AIM to talk to if you really need it. and oph, I don't know, maybe Chit Chat?

Even if the random board were deleted, there would still be random threads on the other boards. Random threads sprung up everywhere when it was closed. I never thought I'd see a random thread on the My Favorite Martian or Courtship of Eddie's Father board.

Actually, I would much prefer to have them all on one single board just to keep things organized.

Having the random theads on the main chit chat board I think killed everything. They took over things.

At least what I post is relevant to the discussion. I don't go off talking to myself by quoting some play I obsess over that no one has probably seen or wants to see.

How did you manage to put location in there? You know how in location it's just blank and we can put anything we like? How about take out post number and put something similiar to that. Mood without the smilie there for it, personal quote (Where you can put a favorite quote of yours), status (male, female, age, height), etc.

Very true. I mean i can understand when people just post things that are meaningless. Now THAT'S a reason to be upset or want post totals to leave. But if your really talking, or saying something why should you get upset over that? It is a random board to speak your mind and talk about whatever you want. Thats why so many people like it and post there

Location is part of the default program, I changed nothing.. but it will take like 30 seconds to remove the post counts - it's adding something new that would take a long time..

If something else like gender or something would be added, then I'd have to add another field to the profile and it would get very complicated.

Well then make your own topic and post your quotes there. If there's a discussion going on between you and say, Sean, and someone interrupts by posting pictures of huge penises, are you going to let it go on or say something? Chances are you're going to tell that person to make their own topic because no one wants to see the penises, at least I hope not.

You know what I'm talking about. Why do you think no one comments to your posts? Because they're annoyed by it. I didn't say anything because, like Kristina, I was trying to prevent a fight. I didn't just make it up either; it's been going on for months now. How about we wait and get Amy, Tim, and others to weigh in their sides of the story? She's only saying that so she can prevent a fight to save her own skin. She hates confrontation; I, however, enjoy it. Get everything out in the open. Have you wondered why she hasn't been on for such a long time? Or why she only comes on every three or four days at a time? Busy with school maybe? But how come when I log on, I see her on everyday? Odd, isn't it.

1. No thanks, I have more than enough of one. :)
2. I have more than enough friends. More than you can say. And no, online does not count. Who wants to be friends with a guy who obsesses so much over a band that they try to attempt to put on black, eye liner to look like their favorite band leader, a bad attempt at that.
3. Sorry, I only drink socially, and only on weekends when I'm off from school and only like twice a month. I consider being in college and enjoying yourself more entertaining than sitting at home listening to some century old play.

Where did you find it at? I'm looking at the one from vbulletin.org. Ah, well if I could download the script I could look at it and see if I could install it for you. It doesn't really matter 'cause I know post counts will stay anyway whether or not the users on here vote no. Let's just call it a hunch.

i dont think it will make a difference - if its in a person's nature to obsess and fight over something as silly as post counts, they'll just find something else to compete with.

Will removing the # really deter people from making pointless posts/threads ?

Vbulletin must be more complex than XMB boards because it took me less than 10 minutes to install each of these features - a portal, shop, mood (with imood smilies), various board themes, and such to my board. I'm not bragging or anything I'm just saying that this board must have more to deal with as far as templates go.

I do get irritated by people who post just to up their totals and put lines in their sig like "Whoohoo 857 posts on July 14th!" and stuff like that but I like seeing them there. It's nice to see when people registered, how much they have posted since then, etc.

No offense to you, but you don't have a board with 19,000 members, 1.3 million posts, 30,000+ attachments. I have a seperate photo for practically every board so I have 450 styles and 450 complete template sets with those. Each style has probably over 100 templates which could be editable. If I had one SINGLE style and template set, yes of course it would be easier to edit then and add stuff. But I can't make mass changes on all of them.

Wow what a close vote, I haven't voted myself yet.. it's too bad I can't offer both options as a seperate feature. Those who want the post totals gone had better start campaigning.

How about we just remove it and add nothing else. Sure, it might look empty, but didn't people think that when sig pics were taken out? Now look, no one cares. No one will care in one month about it.

Plus, if you want to look up post total and see how much they've posted since they've registered, you can just look in the person's profile. It's not that hard.

That's what I say. People were complaining about siggies for a while, and now no one cares. They'll get over this just as quickly.

I think you're making an issue out of nothing. People are going to post crap regardless of whether or not it's there; all this will do is make some people mad and make those happy mad at those who are mad about it. A fine example of the conflicts it will cause (or already has, in this case) is earlier in this thread.

TJ
12-09-2003, 10:59 PM
I think the people that want them gone will be more mad if they are kept, then the people who wanted to keep them would be if they were taken away.

And I don't think the problem is the useless posts, it's the bragging about it that bothers most people.

I dunno...Here's an idea....Do you have the possibility to add a feature where users can turn off post counts and not be able to view them? Like the av/siggy feature you have there...I was just asking, tho.

What does how many members and attachments you have, have to do with your templates? Anyway, like I said you probably have more templates than my board does. Although, adding the codes for mood or gender would only have to go on a few templates such as member profile, member control panel, and view thread post. Then there would be your php files like member control panel, member, and view thread. But like I also said both boards I'm sure are different when adding things since you have a vbulletin board and I have an xmb board. Anyway, it really doesn't matter now. I was just trying to give you a suggestion if you do take post counts away, which I really doubt now anyway. I really just don't care anymore.

The template system for vbulletin I've read is much more complex then any other board out there.

I don't know why you keep saying you doubt they will be taken away, I didn't want to make the choice myself so I thought it would be best to let the community decide.

I think you're missing the whole point. Part of it is the useless posts and the other part is the people who brag about it. No offense, but you would be one of those people. Let me ask you a question. What's the big deal how many posts you have? Do you think you're superior to everyone else because you just happened to have more posts? If so, honey you need to get back to the real reason why people post here because no one cares how many posts you have and it doesn't make you anymore popular than anyone else.

I've never used vbulletin, personally. Don't you have to pay for it? If so, thats why I downloaded xmb because it's free and you pretty much get the same features and maybe more, imo. Plus, board themes are a heck of a lot easier to create.

Well, I don't want to dig up ghosts or anything but didn't you create a thread about pics in sigs and you said that you would make a decision after you see how many people wanted them and how many didn't. As I recall, and my memory might be fuzzy, but didn't more people want them over those who didn't? Yet, you decided to take them away. That's why I have my doubts. I realize you have to make decisions and all, but usually anytime you create one of these threads you go with the opposite of what anyone wants. True, it's your board and you may do anything you like with it.

Yes, vbulletin is like $160 for a license or $80-85 a year. There are many free boards that are just as good as vbulletin I think though.

I don't know if I created a poll for it - but I believe I was asking people for general feedback on what they would prefer having: Signatures in pics or attachments that automatically download and you wouldnt have to click on a link. There was no formal vote and ultimately I made my own decision on it.

The move to remove pics out of signatures was done more for survival at the time then anything.

That's exactly why I wouldn't get vbulletin. I don't believe in paying for something like that if you can download it for free. Xmb and phpBB boards, you can download for free and they are just as good as vbulletin. I believe thats why they are becoming more popular because they're free. Plus, no annoying ads, :cheer: unless of course you want to add them. ;)

I don't remember if there was a poll or not, but I thought you were asking the exact same thing though. That you would make a decision by how many people say yes or no to the situation. Of course, I could be wrong as I usually am in these situations.

Well I see that I created a poll, but I never announced an ending date. I guess if you wanted to say I went against what the majority wanted, you could say that even though the poll didn't go on for very long. It lasted for less then a day before it was closed. Actually it was only open for 3-4 hours so I guess I had already made up my mind about it and had second thoughts about the poll.

I knew there was a poll, but I wasn't sure. You know what you could've done if you were worried about your server. You could've turned off uploading attachments and had people link from other sources such as imagestation or boomspeed. It would've saved you a lot of aggravation.

And no TJ will not be sending you a check for $20 million dollars in the mail if you happen to have a nice big post count.

Post counts are evil and they don't serve a purpose. They only serve as a disturbance in posting. Who wants to see 20 million posts saying lyke omg! i'm so cool because i have 21,000 posts! yay! for me! :woohoo:

True, it doesn't matter but some people on here seem to make it clear that it's the only reason they post because they want to be on the top 10 list or to have the most posts. I'm just annoyed by people who make such a big deal out of having the most posts. Those same people are the ones who make those annoying posts with them counting how many posts they need to make it to the next number or posting the same damn thing on every other thread. It's annoying, okay. Well, thats my take on it. I can't speak for the others like Chris (OP) and Sarah. By the way, it's taken, not tooken. ;)

If TJ deleted all of your posts, what would you think? Would you be mad? This is a witch hunt how...? Pictures in signatures were taken away...people got over it. No witch hunt occured. What else could be taken away? Avatars, registration dates, profiles, The Happy Days Random Board...?

Point is, if you could care less about post counts like a lot of you say you do, you wouldn't care if they were taken away. If you want them, it proves you want it there so you can boost both your post toal and ego.

Point is, if you could care less about post counts like a lot of you say you do, you wouldn't care if they were taken away. If you want them, it proves you want it there so you can boost both your post toal and ego.

Chris speaks the truth here. Most of you who are saying you want them to stay will most likely be the ones who will end up threatening to leave. Ah, well who needs ya anyway. Bon voyage!

Hey, that last one you mention Chris should be taken away. ;) What are they special because they like HD? I don't think so. http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung0903/traurig/sad-smiley-053.gif Excuse me, I'd like to see a random board at the Bewitched and Mary Tyler Moore Show board, thank you. ;) Yeah, wait I take that back they're special all right. :cuckoo

I'd like to see something replace it.

What time does this end on Friday?

I wonder if anyone signed up under another name just to vote "yes" in this poll again?

If so, you can see why it should be removed.

And how sad it is that some people would go that far.

I don't think that Happy Days Random board helps anything. What's the Random Board for, anyway? I mean, I used to post at that board but I've gotten out of it and smartened up.

Ditto to Exstead, she said it all. It's like a competition or something, if you ask me.

That would be lousy. Let's hope there's a way that TJ can tell if any monkey business is going on in that respect.

No Need to Insult us,We never Asked for the HD Random Posts Board. TJ Created it to keep our random threads off the regular Happy Days Board...Which we did long before their even was a Random Posts Board.
