View Full Version : Should post counts be displayed?

This is true. If there were enough demand on other boards for chit chat boards, I would consider adding them. At the same time, if I ever permanently closed down the Random Board I would also close down the Happy Days Random Board or vice versa. I would play no favorites.
Our accounting firm will be auditing the final results to ensure that there are no duplicate or otherwise bogus votes.

Okay, okay. I admit it. I voted no under several aliases. Let's see, OJ Simpson, Mickey Mouse, George W. Bush, and Bennifer. Sorry.
Barnabas1 12-11-2003, 04:46 PM I just voted and did yes by accident, is there a way to change it? It was a honest mistake.

No.
Unless TJ wants to do it for you.

It's for people to chat back and forth. Nothing wrong with that at all.

This is a witch hunt how...? Pictures in signatures were taken away...people got over it. No witch hunt occured. What else could be taken away? Avatars, registration dates, profiles, The Happy Days Random Board...?
TJ has already stated that removing the sig pics was necessary to keep the server operating smoothly, so that is irrelevent.
as for what else could be taken away, i dont know, but people always seem to find something to complain or fight about here, and I compare it to a witch hunt because of the way some people feel the need to "police" others on here.
Point is, if you could care less about post counts like a lot of you say you do, you wouldn't care if they were taken away. If you want them, it proves you want it there so you can boost both your post toal and ego. i dont really think that it proves anything;i use them for a reference to where/when i made a specific post - simple convenience.
i dont care if they stay or go, but I do feel that if someone is blatantly post counting, it would be a lot more effective to put them on read-only for a month than just hiding their number of posts
there seems to be as much registration date-driven egos around here as there are posts-counters, so why don't we get rid of THAT too?

How can you? Post numbers don't stay with your post, they always display your current post average, even if you go back to your first post. So that made no sense. Plus, post count would still stay in your profile, and in you'd have the same amount of pages in your post search as you do now. The only difference is that others won't be able to see how many posts you or I have unless they go read our profiles.
But it looks like they're going to be removed, so there's really no more point to discussing.

i'm not arguing that it is a necessity or anything - i'm merely stating that i use them

Hollow 12-12-2003, 01:03 AM ok it should be closed now.
It was a surprisingly close vote, but with 50 votes to 46 - it is clear most would like to see them removed. I never thought that many people would be in favor of getting rid of them, but perhaps they could see the problems they have caused.
For the record, I also voted no. I can see why other large message boards (like DVD Talk) have removed them due to the potential problems they may cause as far as the competing and post padding.
While they will no longer be displayed in threads, they are still being tracked and you can view them in your profile from time to time if you feel the need.
Czas na Zywiec 12-12-2003, 02:43 AM TJ, you were the third person to join this website?
Now that can't be right, since I created it! How I ended up as member #3 I have no idea, I think that's just the way it transferred over from the old boards.
Now we will probably have fights over who has the largest member number. :)

Except in this case people can't compete to boost it up cause it never changes.
It's also nice to see such a low number next to my name. It reminds me of the time when I had 2000 posts. Ahhh, the good old days. :D I miss them.

At that said board, when you register, you automatically get the title "cheapskate" - you can't even change it, unless you make a donation. After your donation gets through, you're allowed the privilege of getting an avatar and changing the title so it doesn't say cheapskate...The cheapskate thing is a link to their donation page, so when you're ready to donate, you can. You also can't even have signatures AT ALL.

Talk about making you feel guilty.

I'm not sure. You can donate any amount, I believe. I need to look into that. :) Here's what I found.
As you may be aware, with the downturn in online advertising, many websites have needed to either go out of business or find another way to make money. That's where you come in. If you'd like to help ... stay online, you can do so by donating. As a reward for donating, we have decided to add special features to the forums for those people who want to help the network.
What the donations get you:
$5-3 months with an avatar or custom rank of your choice at one (1) of the ...-owned forums (..., ..., ..., and ...)
$10-6 months with an avatar or custom rank of your choice at up to two (2) of the ...-owned forums (..., ..., ..., and ...)
$20-1 year with an avatar or custom rank of your choice at any or all of the ...-owned forums (..., ..., ..., and ...)
If you have already donated and would like to request these features, contact ... with your username(s) and your request for your custom rank(s) or avatar (s), as well as proof of your donation (if you do not have proof but donated via Paypal, include the e-mail address you used to donate, as well as the name on that account). If you request an avatar, include the url to it. Make sure to also include your login name or member number. Also, if you would like to be included on the donation thanks page, indicate that in the e-mail.
You decide what features the forums have.

And I found some more.
Wondering where Who's Online is? Want icons? More smilies? As the bandwidth crunch has hit the Internet, some features at the forums have had to be deleted. It's up to you whether or not those features or not. Each month's donations from all visitors combined will be calculated. If the total is enough to bring features back online, they will be added the next month for one month.
The following is a list of features that can be reenabled if there is enough visitor support:
ID Feature Total
A post total, location $20
B A + member ratings $30
C A-B + post icons $45
D* A-C + 20 extra smilies $60
E A-D + custom ranks* $70
F A-E + who's online $80
G A-F + signatures $100
Oftentimes, they never get past letter A. It's sad, really. Be thankful SO isn't like that board I go to. ohno:

I know, but things change and websites often need help as your other site explained about the downturn in online advertising.
I think if everyone who can afford it, would send a donation to SO, it would ensure that it stays around.
I look at it as entertainment....a movie, book, magazine subscription, Netflix, a Premium cable station, etc -- I enjoy these things, so I pay for them.
I know people can't give what they don't have, but I think those that can donate, should do so.
How about something like "Favorite Movie" or "Favorite TV Show?"
*Marilyn Monroe* 12-13-2003, 03:00 PM What about showing if they're logged on? Is that even possible?

Oh, I'm sure you could. It could be called, Personal Quote or simply, Quote.
robyrob 12-13-2003, 07:35 PM does it really need anything in there? you can put whatever you want in the "location" field - go nuts
david&maddie4ever 12-13-2003, 07:49 PM Ya know, at first, I thought that the post counts being gone wouldn't be bad at all, because I can just check mine in Profile, but my post count isn't the issue...suprisingly enough. :D What I don't like about it is that when you're looking through a thread and you see somebody you don't know, you have absolutely no idea if they're new or a veteran! It doesn't sound bad, but it kinda gets aggravating. :o

I REALLY want there to be an "member is online/offline" thing...that would be really neat.
As I stated in your feedback thread, an online/offline status thing would be meaningless since so many people are in invisible mode anyway.. they would always be displayed as offline.
I think a 'veteran' can be distinguished from a newbie by just looking at their registration date.
Georgia's on my Mind 12-13-2003, 09:10 PM I really like the mood idea...and also the quote thing...like a "Quote of the day" would be cool.
david&maddie4ever 12-13-2003, 09:10 PM TJ ~
What you said about the veteren/newbie thing makes sense, but some people have like 100 million posts per day, so...ya never know! :p

theanswerman 12-16-2003, 07:18 PM its just a number, get over it.
get a piece of paper, tape it to your monitor and write how many posts you have on it...and you will be set!
Hollow 12-16-2003, 07:18 PM This is Jesus Christ speaking. Put in a mood thing or I'll throw you in hell.
I am not going to be able to add a mood thing, so you can add it yourself like some people have in your location. You can have up to 250 characters in your location so that is plenty of room to add something like - Mood: feeling great

Janice 12-16-2003, 09:24 PM Is it possible to start a new line in the location section.....so my mood or whatever would fall under the location? I like to state where I reside.

I don't think that's possible, why not just use ------ or ..........
Location: Marietta, GA--------------
Mood: feeling great
or
Location: Marietta, GA................
Mood: feeling great
You would have to play around with it to line it up properly of course..
