ABC are so cheap! They should have cancelled 8SR after John died but they wanted to earn more money and they kept running it....I was really upset when they decided to continue the show

Sorry if I offended any1

that's a position. and i'm sure one point for abc to continue the show was money (cuz everything's about money).

but on the other hand... think about what john would have wanted. he wouldnt have wanted the show to be cancelled. and it's the same with his family. amy said in an interview that john would have wanted the show to go on and that she's proud that the show continues, because they continue john's very own show, his last work that he couldnt finish. so in a certain way the continuing of the show is like a tribute to him. and i think that's a very nice tribute, millions of people are still watching the show and remembering john ritter, together with his tv family and of course his real family

I agree with TheBert. Of course, the ABC execs certainly reaped a lot of benefits from this tragedy, but they weren't the only ones who decided to keep doing the show. Everyone involved was consulted and they approved of continuing as a tribute to John.

Here's the statement Amy released and I think it says everything:
"John always dealt with anything that life threw at him with humor. He believed in this show and its message that a strong family can get through anything. He felt so lucky to be working with such wonderful people everyday. They all had such a warm friendship, and I know John would want his friends to be able to continue doing what they love."

You didn't offend anyone. You have a good point and I think you expressed it politely.

Im glad it went on

Sure.... its nowhere as good without John, but a good show in its own right.

You do have points, but he was the leading character. It would be like if Melissa Joan Hart died but they kept making Sabrina the Teenage Witch (I do realise the show is cancelled)

no.... theres a difference here.
Sabrina wasnt any good in the first place.

With or without John.... 8 Simple Rules is great.

Well that's a point of view

But you couldn't continue the show without the leading character. It should be like that for every show

Shelley Long was the star of Cheers, and when she left.... the show went on to even bigger ratings.

I'm also really glad it went on! It's a great show and John would have wanted it that way, as another poster said.

Shelley's characters name wasm't in the title or there wasn't any referneces to her character in the title. The "My Teenage Daughter" part was referring to Paul. Cate wasn't as strict as Paul was about dating

They're still Cate's kids.
But Im not going to waste my time fighting with you.
The show must go on.

I wish all the best for 8 Simple Rules, but that doesn't mean I actually will watch the show! What I do is just leave the tv on to the channel when the show comes on and go to the next room to do something else!
I do want the show to be successful only because it was JOHN'S SHOWI'm sorry, but watching the show now without John is just too sad! R.I.P. John U WILL BE MISSED!

Just one question....Why was the "My Teenage Daughter" part dropped if it referes to Paul and Cate?

barwars

Because the title was too long in the first place.... everyone called it "8 Simple Rules" anyways.

They wouldn't have dropped it if John hadn't died

You need to stop dwelling on this! If you don't want to watch, then don't. I think the show is still good. Sure, it was John's show, but as in real life, his TV family wants to keep his memory alive and what better way than to continue the show John loved. Amy has to continue on without John. What should she do? End her life now? I think watching the show is like therapy. We can all go through the stages of grief with the people who were close to John. Death is a fact of life, and when someone dies, you don't just get rid of everything that meant something to the person. You hold onto it with sentimental value. Cancelling the show isn't going to cancel the fact that John Ritter was taken much too soon. Too many people want to close their eyes and pretend bad things don't happen. Everyone involved with 8SR is treating this terrible circumstance with class. Where's yours? By the way, the whole idea of 8SR, or any show for that matter, is ratings and money. That's what it was all about before the pilot even aired last year, when John was alive and well. No producer puts out a show saying, "I hope it doesn't go anywhere. We're doing this just for the fun of watching it flop." You go to work, I would think, for money. Don't you? Get real!

I am real! ABC just kept the show going because they wanted to juice for as much as possible and they didn't give a damn about anything else.

If they are only running it to keep his memory alive then they are wasting time. Any fan will remember with or without this tv show.

The majority of fans want this show to continue. It would be a disappointment otherwise!

John will be best remembered for Three's Company. That show is his true legacy.

Years from now, after 8 Simple Rules is long over, people will remember the show, but it will fade into obscurity.

In terms of roles, John Ritter will always be Jack Tripper to me.

I agree! I still call John Ritter Jack Tripper sometimes! But I did like him in 8SR too because the 2 roles sort of mirrored my life. When Three's Company came out, I had just moved out of my parents' house and was living with a roomate, going out all the time and having fun. Now with 8SR, I could relate to John's character again. I also have 2 teenagers, and my life now revolves around them. No more partying or carefree life. I guess you could say that I feel like I grew up with John. Not from a child to an adult but from a young adult to finally finding my comfortable place in life. I still watch 8SR because I can relate to everyone in the show, and it makes me feel like all of the sarcasm and other crazy things my kids do is actually normal!

Just read this thread and wanted to add something...

I am not sure why the part of the name "My teenage daughters" was dropped, but others shows have changed and/or dropped part of their name for reasons that the original was too long or majority of people called it by another shorter name, just like 8 Simple Rules...even if the name was still in tact in its entirety ads and tv spots still called it by its shorter name
Also I have children and I am not as strict as my husband BUT I wouldnt say that when he says "my" children he is strictly talking about him being the only parent

Beverly Hills 90210 - referred to loosly as 90210
Melrose Place - Melrose
Fresh Prince of Bel Air - Fresh Prince
3rd Rock from the Sun - 3rd Rock
The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet - Ozzie and Harriet
ETC...
