Hey guys..

I was wandering if there were any hit TV Shows from the 70's/80's/even 90's that if they premired today would never make it ratings wise.

I would have to say "Growing Pains" "Full House" "Mork and Mindy" "Wings" and "Gilligan's Island"

What do you think?

"Hogan's Heroes"...I doubt it would make it even if it were set in a fake war.

I dunno...."Mama's Family" probably but this show did pretty well in the ratings in the 80's. :)

Gosh I can't think of a show from the decades of the 50's, 60,'s or 70's that would make it. Todays audience are more clever. Half the 60's were fantasy shows. But on the other hand I seldom watch any shows from the 90's. It a whole new ball game.

I don't think I Love Lucy would've made it.

All In The Family would probably have a hard time getting made today.

Step By Step, Full House, Growing Pains and many more... it's a wonder a lot made it as long as they did!

For starters, "Family Ties." Any show that doesn't portray a young conservative like Alex P. Keaton as a villain would never make it past the 1990's.

I agree. I'm surprised that show is lasting in reruns. Boy, if it weren't for Michael J. Fox . . . he's the glue to the show. In my opinion, I honestly don't think Family Ties is"making it" in today's age because the ratings have not proven otherwise. It has gotten horrible timeslots for most of it's cable life. I will not be surprised if the show gradually fades away in the next ten or twenty years.

Any show that has anything about it that anyone would consider politically incorrect wouldn't get made now:

All in the Family- derogatory language against ethnic groups,

Hogan's Heroes- considered to be insensitive to war vets and anti-semitic,

Chico and the Man- considered reinforcing stereotypes of latino/Mexicans,

I Love Lucy- anti-feminist messages in Lucy's behavior,

I Dream of Jeannie- anti-feminist messages in Jeannie's behavior, Bewitched- anti-feminist messages in Darrin's anti-witchcraft attitude and promotes alcoholism,

What's Happening- promotes obesity in African Americans

Many others....

Also any show that didn't have conventionally pretty people prominently featured or that had a cast of over 40 year olds as the leads wouldn't have a chance now:

Odd Couple, Lucy Show, Gomer Pyle, many many others....

Also interestignly enough, Holocaust survivors and the American Nazi Party both hated it.

They must not have complained too loudly or been too organized in their outcry because it ran six years and had high ratings both in its broadcast run and in syndication.

I don't even know if something like this would even get on HBO today.

just wondering.... why??

It seems like one of the few shows that could air today and still succeed.
Along with....
Mary Tyler Moore
Taxi
The Bob Newhart Show
and a few others, but thats basically it.

Ohh, and The Jeffersons couldve started in 1975, and STILL be airing -- and making it.

Most shows from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and early to mid 90s.
Although I love some of these shows:

Who's The Boss?- too family friendly for today's audience.
Family Ties- too politacal and family friendly
Although I love it: Full House- too family friendly. Might work as a show on Teenick, though.
I Dream of Jeannie- too mythical.
Bewitched- same reason as I Dream od Jeannie
The Brady Bunch- too family-friendly
The Cosby Show- too family friendly
The Facts of Life- i dont think teens would be intersted in it as they were in the 80s.
Happy Days- a show about a decade that was nearly 50 years ago wouldnt work in primetime.
Gilligan's Island- too silly. Might work as a kids show, though.
Different Strokes- too family friendly.
The Odd Couple- too family friendly.

If Cheers premiered in 2004 and had the same ratings in its first season it did in 1982, it would be canceled within a week or two. Sad, but true.

We need someone like Brandon Tartikoff running the networks now.

Sadly, I don't think The Lucy Show would have made into today either. The show is just too unrealistic in today's standards.

Brandon Tartikoff was a TV GOD.
He knew quality, and stuck to it.

Most 60s shows would not make it.

I would really like to see a good 80s style family sitcom developed just to see if one could make it.

Leave it to Beaver- Wouldn't make it in todays world if it didn't have sex, violence and/or profanity. Family friendly just doesn't make it on TV anymore.

I notice people keep talking about how offensive Hogans Heroes was... but wasn't one of the cast members actually a Holocaust survivor?

The guy who played the French chef was a concentration camp survivor I believe. I think the actors who played Klink and Schultz were connected to the Holocaust experience in some way too, I think they had family in the death camps.

Werner Klemper and John Banner were both Jewish, and therefore were very much opposed to the Nazi regime. Unlike Banner though, Klemper escaped with his father. IMDb has more details on this.
